Receiver with preouts?

Been some time since I have looked at receivers, but I wanted to use HDMI ARC to feed some powered speakers and sub, however it seems like preouts have been removed from everything under $400. Any suggestions? I have no real use for the receiver other than feeding the speakers and the idea of spending that much for something so simple just seems like a total waste.

Isn't the ARC system used to get audio from a TV back to the Receiver?

What speakers and sub are you trying to hook up, and what are you hooking them up to?

From a smart TV running PLEX, speakers are JBL LSR305, sub is Polk Audio PSW505.

Already tried, doesn't work, tried many cables, the 3.5mm adds WAY to much noise into the system.

you can try an optical to RCA dac with an inline volume control, other than that, look for a used receiver with optical in and pre-outs, or a used preamp with optical in.

Or, I could just buy a receiver....I will spend the $400+ on one, I am just wanting to know if there are other receiver options I passed up, possibly cheaper. I will probably be adding more speakers etc over time, so the receiver at some point might end up getting more use anyway. The JBLs are great and have always loved them, the Polk is loud and not bad, but no where near the JBLs, and down the road will probably end up moving them to my computer speakers.

I just browsed some Yamaha's and $900 is the cheapest I found with pre-outs.
you'd figure the cheaper ones would have pre-outs for the front and center so you could up your power with some amps down the road. My old low-mid range Pioneer had front and center pre-outs but my midrange Elite doesn't.

I am guessing people never really used the pre-outs on the cheaper ones, since they got the cheaper model initially they couldn't afford/justify the more expensive model, so they probably wouldn't have invested in more powerful amps in the future.

From my reading the past few days it was because lots of people were not buying the higher end models, so they removed the preouts on lower end stuff so you had to buy the most expensive units for such a basic feature. I found a $399 Onkyo unit with L/R preouts and sub, but that is the cheapest I have found.

You could use the receiver's headphone jack with a 3.5mm to stereo rca cable.

You're probably going to get a bit of noise no matter what you do.

I could just use (as I have) the 3.5mm on the TV if I was going to do that, but as I said, to much noise. RCA that is not the case.

TV model? There has to be a better option than using ARC.. TV has no RCA out or Optical?

I can run RCA, and no noise, already tested....And lose volume control from the remote so I can get up and change the volume with the knob on the back of each speaker....No thanks. Optical? Sure, still the same volume problem and need something to feed it into to change to XLR or 1/4 inputs to the speakers, and also split into the sub, which comes back to a receiver or peramp, and good God don't even bother with the price of one of those with 1/4 or XLR outs, start looking at $1,200+ range. Also, what is wrong with ARC? HDMI can do HD audio, though ARC is limited to optical quality. None of which really matter being that it is all for the time being, being pushed to a 2.1 system.

Okay now I'm getting the picture.. Honestly, you're best/cheapest bet might just be to hit up Ebay/Craigstlist for an older model used Receiver(Technically a "Processor" if it's just preouts..) with preouts.

Interesting site, pretty good prices. Assuming everything is refurb? Have you ever ordered from them? Or are they a well known vendor?

Why not just get a dedicated AV processor. The Outlaw Model 975 is (relatively) affordable and Emotiva should be launching the MC-700 soon. I'm using the Outlaw unit since receivers can't handle my speakers.

Accessories4Less is well-known on a lot of the dedicated A/V sites but they DO sell refurbished items, which can have un-diagnosed problems. Returning defective items is generally painless. I usually suggest adding an extended warranty with anything from A4L, which adds $30 to $70 to the cost. A little above your budget, but I'd recommend the Denon AVR X4200W. If you just want to power your JBL and get a signal to your sub, then you might be able to get away with just a DAC. The Denon ( and any other receiver with pre-outs ) will allow you to add additional passive speakers for surround sound and give you Audyssey room correction. A DAC generally won't have any room correction. Plenty of folks make DACs for 2-channel use. I am using the Emotiva DC-1 for my PC setup, which is stereo plus an SVS sub-woofer. It is an excellent DAC and will allow you to run digital out ( co-ax or optical ) from your TV to the DAC. From there you'd run RCA or XLR to the JBL and split to the sub. My audio monitors ( Emotiva Stealth 6 ) have XLR, so I run those and use the RCA for my SVS sub and let the sub do the cross-over.

My favorite cheap one would be the Marantz slimlike 1606. Available for $370 refurb. Works best imo and has a l/r preout. Only 4" high vs the usual 6-8.
