I recently bought the GTX 1070...very satisfied with its gaming performance but the video playback is lacking. I watch a lot of anime and the 24 fps is killing me...

I dont want to sell off my GTX 1070 to get RX 480... I have been thinking just add a RX 460 on the same PC. I Dont expect them to run at the same time. I only have 1 monitor and I will just put the the display port cable to GTX 1070 when I'm gaming and switch the cable to RX 460 when I watch anime. Is this feasible? I think it is..I just want to double check. Thanks.

RX 460 is about 100 bucks..if I sell my GTX 1070...I probably gonna take the loss of around $100 anyway...might as well just get a RX 460.

I just want to use RX 460 for its fluid motion. I know I can use SVP for nvidia...but I think it just doesnt work as well as fluid motion.

Er.r...sorry I havnt made myself clear. I want to use fluid motion for video playback. GTX1070 plays video just fine in 24fps (anime is made in 24fps like most movies.) Fluid motion makes it much smoother and videos will look like there are more fps.

Ah OK, I think I understand what you are saying. I think that can work (2 different video cards on one system) but I've never tried it.

You know you can use fluid motion with madVR, right? It's called Smooth Motion I believe. Basically frame blending AFAIK.

You really should give SVP another try. What's wrong with it? I'm using it for both 60Hz and 144Hz and it works really well. Also using a 1070. What's your media player?

I use VLC. I know SVP paid version support VLC. Do you use madVR as well? I have seen comparison video on fluid motion and SVP...fluid motions won hands down.. Some people reported some graphical error on SVP.

I'm using MPDN, not madVR. They both do roughly the same things, and both offer a smooth motion (frame blending) feature. Using MPDN mostly for shaders and post processing stuff, like frame doubling with NEDI.

SVP is actually frame interpolation, which will probably never be perfect, but the smoothness in action scenes is vastly superior to smooth motion, especially if you interpolate to 144Hz. Of course, producing extra frames will result in artifacts, most notably ringing/halo effects in anime, but that can be reduced somewhat. I rarely see the effect in movies, though.

With the new SVP they have 2 modes, 1 for movies and 1 for animation, and with medium/high artifact hiding I haven't noticed such problems as much, especially with the correct modes chosen.

Alright, thanks. I will give it a try. I also posted my msi gtx 1070 aero on ebay just now LOL... If it doesnt work as well as I have hoped..I guess I will just sell 1070 and get a 470 or 480. The games I play arent that demanding anyway.

Who says the RX 460 will work any better? And you could possible just use the IGP if you got any instead.

Keep the 1070 and solve the issue instead.

Yeah dude, I don't understand why you have issues. This list says the 9600GT has more than enough power for 1080p @ 60hz

GPU Compatibility - SmoothVideo Project (SVP) - frame doubling interpolation

Your current GPU is aqround 40x that powerful. Did you ever stop to think that maybe there's a compatibility isue with your player and SVP, or that MAYBE, just maybe the software isn't perfect?

I never said anything about GTX 1070 not having enough power to handle it. And yes, I dont think you understand why I'm asking this or why I have issues... I knew the software isn't perfect from the start. I have looked up many comparison between SVP and FM... At least I have found that FM works way better because smoother playback quality noted on some of the video comparisons. There are some minor interpolation issue with SVP on animated video as said by trandoangung1991. Anyway, problem solved as of right now. I will have RX 460 handle FM and GTX1070 for gaming and use for playback as suggested on other forum. Just waiting for RX 460 to arrive.

Yea, I'm keeping 1070. I dont want to take the loss. Playback issue will be solved by 460.

This doesn't sound right. Buy a crappy tv that has the soap opera effect. Money would be better spent that dropping $120 on. 460.

SVP interpolation makes it feel as smooth as gaming, so I'd rather take the IQ hit once in a while to get that smoothness. I've tried smooth motion time and again and it's just not up to par. To each his own, I guess.

Does SVP take up a lot of resources? I heard it does.

Not that much. If you have a decent/recent i5 it should run no trouble. It also has OpenCL acceleration, but that mainly increases the accuracy of the interpolation. You can probably get away with an i3 as well.

I can use SVP on my MBP mid 2014 with a dual core 2.6GHz i5 without breaking a sweat, so...

You already use pretty much no CPU power to decode since you can decode with the 1070.

Alright, thanks. I will play around and see which works better. I can just sell that 460 if I decide SVP is good enough..I still have to work around with FM anyway. It still needs bluesky frame rate converter as far as I know. I still need to do more research.

OP, I have something similar. I run a GTX 1080 as a primary video card and have a R9 290X for mining purposes. The monitor I use conveniently has multiple inputs which makes switching easy.

Oh cool, thanks. You are the only one actually answered my original question lol.

Well this has to be a first :D people geting top end video cards with the intent to watch anime. There has to be a first for everything i guess :)

If it can't playback tentacle porn at 60 faps per second, then it's a peasant card. Hentai master race!

I've been watching movies/shows normally my whole life, this is the first time I hear about all this :p makes perfect sense but funny that this never crossed my mind.

Is this free software I can try or do I need to pay up? Sounds cool, wondering if it'll make the sopranos any better

You can try SVP 3, it's still free.

Hmm... this is very interesting. I enjoy using SVP on my old nvidia. I now have an RX480 and a 144hz freesync display. Need to give fluid motion a try. Any idea on how to enable fluid motion on the playback?\

I used mpc hc as player and madvr and they're free, it does make a difference but I don't mind watching TV series at 24 fps.

Well, this is definitely not the first that people have poor reading comprehension. I dont see any part of my message implying "getting top end video card with the intent to watch anime." I got gtx 1070 for gaming as mentioned on the very first line of the original post. Or maybe you are referring RX460 as top end card?

MUST HAVE 60FPS awesomeness!!!!! Haha. I started re-watching fate/zero...wow, what a difference.

You need bluesky frame rate converter. I use it along with MPC-HC. I have not tried madVR on top of it yet.

Anyway, got my rx460 yesterday, I been playing around it for 2 days. I am able to watch most anime in 60 fps. I watch mostly action anime, it works great! No more skipping/jittering especially in the background scenes. I'm not so sure about movies.. I tried to watch some actions in 60fps. It seems much smoother. However, if the movie has a lot of still/ slow moving scenes....I felt a bit odd. Now I know what soap opera effect is. I guess that's why SVP has separate setting for each. I just turn frame rate converter off when watching movies. However..there are some scenes looked great when I tried 60fps on the revenant and the theme song part on game of the thrones. So...bottom line, I'd suggest using it for anime, not so much for movies or TV shows.

Yeah, frame interpolation doesn't work well with slow panning scenes. You'll notice artifacts.

Fun fact. I had my second IMAX experience watching The Magnificent Seven yesterday and while it was extremely immersive, the first thing I noticed was the FPS, lol. I'm too used to 144Hz movie playback now, can't live without it.

Thanks for the tip on the bluesky. I got MPC-HC running at 60fps. I really wish I can get it to run at 120 or 144 like with SVP. Does anyone know how to get Fluid Motion to play back at 120 or 144hz?

Why not just use SVP? Is there a quality difference between Fluid Motion and SVP?

For anyone who cares about using SVP or FM for anime. This is a good video for comparison

As for bluesky vs SVP...watch those 2 video at the same time, I could tell FM+bluesky was slightly superior. Not necessary superior experience when watching anime or movie.

Yeah, that difference is staggering. FM is certainly the superior one, but SVP looks pretty damn good.
