How was something like this not caught during development or QA testing? This seems like something that would happen fairly often if you listen to music on your phone. The video below actually shows the issue (watch the beginning, skip to the end) in action:

Some people might not even notice such a thing, but if your headphones feature inline controls for voice calls and music playback, the automatic shutoff means that those will stop functioning until you unplug the adapter or EarPods and plug them back in. Apple told Business Insider that it's aware of the issue and is planning to fix it with a future software update, though the company didn't get specific about exactly when that'll happen.

He's not pressing the buttons in an apple approved manner, hence it doesn't work.

Steve, ffs, you messed up that title!

See how much better that sounds?

Seems like it's timing out the lightning port to conserve energy, same way USB ports will shut down with certain power profiles. Hardware/software wise it doesn't seem like a big deal but to me. That said, they wouldn't have had the issue had they left the headphone jack...

Better buy those easily lost $170 wireless earbuds then!

This reminds me of the old System 8 (iirc) bug where if you click and held the mouse button on the Apple icon, it would crash the OS.

I have submitted your complaint to the author of the article / person that submitted the story. I am sure The Verge takes your complaint very seriously and will take immediate action to rectify the situation and prevent it from happening in the future. ;)

Wow, Apple really is becoming like Microsoft, now you fix your headphone problem by powering them off and back on!

Man, I really have to ask what the fuck happened at apple with the iphone 7. Skipping the debate over the removal of the headphone jack, this thing is just WAY more beta and untested than apple usually does.

Introduces dual lens camera to do "cool" things. Phone ships without the software to make it do the "cool" things.
Removes headphone jack and provides dongle to provide headphone continuity. Software is blatantly buggy with regard to adapter support.
iOS10 bricks shit worse than the last big overhaul, except it isn't nearly as big an overhaul.

Get your shit together apple.

Oh I can't wait to see how many more of those ports fuck out vs last model! Lets face it, many people will use the adaptor at a party or gym or some other place where they need more than a few hours of playback battery.

This Iphone7 seems like a lack of communication has struck in many areas.
