The DOT has an audio out jack, while the full size Echo does not (a design mistake IMHO).

Seriously. And they've had a chance to revise the old design multiple times now.

Compounded with less value with each major wave of full size Echos, it's like Amazon is trying to kill it's own product. (First wave of Echos had a remote + magnetic dock, second wave had a magnetic dock but no remote; only $29.99 extra!, and now the current Echos have neither a remote nor a dock and you cannot purchase the dock anywhere nor does it come with the remote.)

Might get one of these. Looks pretty slick if it will work with my Ecoobee3 and speakers. This is kind of like google audio on steriods

I have an original Dot on my desk and I run it into my pc audio input and my pc goes to a receiver. It adds a lot of functionality but I mostly use it as a Bluetooth bridge to let me play podcasts through my receiver. Its also great for playing Audible books.

I'm slightly annoyed because while i did have it on order while I thought about it, they filled the order 7 weeks early. Now, only a few months later, it's half the original price.

I love my Echo and I love my Ecobee. Technically they work together but very, very poorly.

For those that don't know, the new Echos work great with multiple in the house, whereas the others didn't. It can discern which echo you are speaking to, based on the microseconds difference with which the mics pic up your speech, and so you no longer have to worry about having one in every room.

I have a echo in the living room, but it was a bit far away to speak to from the bedroom (it controls my lights that wake me in the morning, and is also an alarm clock). So I definitely am happy with that price for the dot.

The NSA and CIA thank you for your purchase...

Man if NSA and CIA wanted something on you I really don't think people realize that they don't need anything to tap in to. Cut your self off the net and get rid of your cell phone. If they want something the will find a way to get it. I don't think they care too much about echo dot.

Right, like the NSA is sitting around waiting for you to buy this echo so they can back door your ass? And fyi the CIA can't operate on US soil, that's FBI turf.

If the dot requires Alexa, how are they killing their own product? It looks like their encouraging people to buy more shit to me. Dot = voice controlled remote? Sorta.. And at $49 people might grab one for each room. Maybe I am off base.

can you use this to control your amazon fire tv ?

No, but they have a remote that will do that.

Update: There is an app add-on for Echo called Kodi that will enable it to control the Echo.
