Basically what I'm looking to do is to get pfsense running on a VirtualBox instance on my home server just to play around with the UI. I'm brand new to it, and based off reviews I think it would be great to have as my next router solution. At this point I don't want it to actually route anything, I just want to be able to log into the config page and see the layout and get a direct "feel" for it before I start piecing together hardware.

Right now the WAN port is pulling an IP from my home router (192.), and the VB NIC is set to "bridged" with the NIC of my server. When I try to ping the IP or goto the web UI via HTTP my computer can't connect to it.

Thanks for whatever help you can provide!

You need the LAN port to get an IP, not the WAN.

Did you have 2x NICs in your workstation? Or did you create 2x virtual NICs in Virtualbox and set up VLAN tagging? Or did you configure pfSense to use VLAN tagging on a single NIC?

Two virtual NICs in Vbox, but I'm pretty sure I haven't set up VLAN tagging yet. I'm still at the "configuring at command line" phase of things.
I've set up DD-WRT on other routers to where I could access their UIs via the network when set up as bridges or APs, and was hoping to do the same here just so I can start to play with it.

Does your switch support VLAN tagging?

Swap the NICs in pfSense so the LAN port gets an IP, then you should be able to connect to the UI interface.

You have to use the command line to setup the IP configuration for the LAN first. It will not pull an IP from another DHCP server, only the WAN side will if you set it up for dynamic IP. Access to the GUI over WAN is disabled by default, so doing that won't help. You have to configure the LAN, then you can access the GUI via the IP you assigned.
