Remember our VR performance guide using the game Raw Data last month? Well, it would seem that the game has gone on to become the first VR title to sell one million copies in a single month. If you want to know what kind of hardware it takes to get the best experience out of Raw Data, make sure you read our VR performance guide.

According to Culver City, California-based Survios, Raw Data, available only for HTC’s high-end Vive, has become the first consumer VR game to hit $1 million in sales in a month. In addition, the company said, at least 20% of all Vive owners have purchased the $40 first-person shooter, and it became the first-ever VR game to top the charts at Steam, a leading game platform and ranking site.

Impressive achievement. Sadly this is one of the worst-performing games I've found on Vive so far. Which sucks because it is a very quality title otherwise.

Important distinction: It's $1M in sales, not 1 million copies.

Considering the estimates I found were 100-200k Rift/Vive systems that would be an achievement!

Still good they did $1M in a month. These systems haven't even been around long.

More like 25,000 copies assuming
retail price

At this point it is a huge accomplishment, i think most vr developers understand that they need to keep budgets down when you are making in essence launch titles for a brand new product category. it is also the reason why you havent seen really any VR only games coming from AAA developers unless some payola was involved.

I actually returned my vive after a week because there just wasnt enough compelling titles out there. I was a big fan of the roomscale concept but now I'm not so sure. It's pretty exhilarating the first time you walk through a doorway or approach a desk and walk all the way around it inspecting it from all sides, and it cant be replicated anywhere else but VR. But once the novelty wears off you are craving something more mentally stimulating. Puzzler's and mystery type games are a good fit, but these action sims all feel awfully basic. It's hard to properly aim an M16 and fire it, but making it difficult does not create a challenge, it just creates an annoyance. You just feel handicapped from your true latent potential which is better realized holding an actual m16 or just playing a traditional shooter. I had more fun playing platformer games in VR where the only thing to do is just look around and observe the world. At least the game itself was fun. Might look into buying a rift since it is better suited to these kind of titles with a lighter head unit, single base station, and cutout around nose to easily see your controller.

Maybe Occulus does make more sense for you. Room scale is pretty much the reason I am getting the Vive. I want to get the family off their asses in the dead of winter/rainy days. Only shooter I might get is Raw Data. For any serious shooters I'd have to make myself a gun (like some have out of PVC).

If you buy the Vive you should get 3 free games, TiltBrush, Zombie Apocalypse Trainer, and The Gallery: Call of the Starseed. Depending upon where you get it you will be emailed the activation keys for Steam. Make sure you play Gallery. This was a perfect VR showcase game. It has a compelling story, good environments that are utilized in VR well, and puzzles that dont insult your intelligence. The last 30 minutes of the game gave me chills. If there were more titles like this then I think it can succeed.

Agreed about The Gallery. Only complaint here was that it's far too short and I would have liked more actual puzzles.
