Forget about 3D-printing huge tools like this for building planes. Eventually we will be 3D-printing entire planes instead. I'm not sure I would fly in a plane that was 3D-printed though. Would you?

COOL!!

I can download a house now.

Still waiting to download a car though.

if the tolerances are guaranteed to be good enough, what would be the problem about operating any sort of 3D printed vehicle?

I think this would be a great idea. Well I've never flown so handmade or 3D printed is the same to me. :)

You want a 3d printed car? Already old news:

Now to be fair, i think it's mostly the body which was printed. The engine and mechanical parts were then put on it.

Anti Piracy Ad: You wouldn't download a car...... Yes I would :D
You couldn't afford the 3d printing material to print it anyway.

Also when they're talking 3d printed cars only the body is printed. You'd still have to buy everything else.

Preliminary to 3D printed planets.
All hail the Deathstar!

Get robots to shunt asteroids toward it, free material.

In a word, COST. A sheet of stamped steel is a lot cheaper than a similar quantity of plastic. It'll also have more consistent/predictable strength than a 3d-printed object.
