Sony's PlayStation Meeting 2016 is in full swing. The company is talking about the PS4 Pro, upcoming games and so on. I have to apologize in advance because, thanks to Twitch, the embedded video below autoplays. :(

*UPDATE* Show is over, removed the autoplay Twitch feed, hit the link to watch all the after show blah-blah talking heads.

What's with only 10 people at most clapping during the event? Then again, who thought it was a good idea to host this on the same day as the iPhone 7 launch?

That's the most bored I've been in years! I nodded off a few times... :dead:

Another win for Sony in the console war. They get their 4K console out this year while MS doesn't get theirs out for another 12 months.

Yeah, that's a pretty compelling product @ $399. Makes it hard to recommend the "old" PS4 at just $100 cheaper...

So the conference was a "miss" for those of us who are engaged gamers or the PlayStation audience. They really failed to make it exciting or compelling.

That said, the PS4 Pro is a good idea. This specific implementation may or may not be right. We'll see about that.

Consumer tech advances much more quickly than an 5-8 year console cycle. It will be a good thing if there are 2-3 year hardware cycles for consoles to include new consumer technology like 4K, HDR, VR, HDMI X.X, etc. Consoles need to continue to iterate to keep pace with the rest of consumer electronics.

did they specify if this has a UHD bluray player in it like the xbone s? When can i preorder?

bleh sony, so hard to find relevant information, i don't want to see doctored screenshots.

Though I'm not sure how well this hardware is actually going to hold up @ 4K...

Sounds like it'll be more upconverting magic than actual 4K resolution.

Cerny introduced 4K footage of PS4 Pro-compatible games launching in the future, including Ubisoft's For Honor and Insomniac's upcoming Spider-Man game, along with previously released games like last month's Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. During these demonstrations, Cerny made clear that models and textures were the "exact same ones that were created for the PS4," with the newer Pro system pulling the rendering weight to boost to something that works on a 4K display. He stressed that the system pulled the brunt of the work, as opposed to game developers, so that "smaller teams can bring their titles to PS4 Pro and the new world of higher resolution displays."
Sony’s PS4 Pro provides a mid-generation graphics bump to PS4 games

Given that you need a $1,200 GPU to run 4k without compromise I'm with SeymourGore, its going to be up-converting and some other shenanigans. Hell I'll be impressed if the PS4 Pro can run at true 1080p without compromise...

Nope. From the senior editor of Engadget:
For all they talked up 4K, this thing doesn't have a UHD Blu-ray player. Yeah, physical media may not be as popular as it once was but I think many who just picked up a 4K TV would find that as a nice value add. Especially as standalone 4K players cost $300+.

Also the Xbox One S supports UHD Blu-ray playback. I don't get it...

Isn't the MS competitor to the PS4 pro rumored to be substantially better?

Thinking of finally picking up a current gen console, and the Ps4 Pro doesn't look too shabby. That being said, if the Xbox 1.5 is better, and has Blu Ray like the XB1 S, I'd rather just wait.

Wtf Sony doesn't have a uhd player in this thing have they lost there mind lol there the ones that came up with blu ray. They are retarted. I know a lot of people that were going to pick one up just for uhd 4k.

It is supposed to be much more powerful. Like 1.8 teraflops more powerful. Some games might even run at native 4K on the Scorpio (At the press event a lot of games were running at 1080+ on the Pro and then upscaled), but that doesn't matter to the average consumer. They will just know that the PS4 Pro did 4K gaming first. Though if you want a 4K Blu-Ray player you will have to go with the Xbox One S(lim) or the Xbox One Scorpio since apparently Sony decided a 4K console didn't need to be able to play 4K Blu-ray disks.

I was planning on buying one for the UHD player as well. This is a bone head move from Sony.

You know that the P4 Pro is just upscaling to 4K not natively. If we go by that logic, the Xbox 1S did it first since it upscales to 4K.

I mean, technically it has the bluray drive for it, maybe a firmware update for a later time. The software would be the only limitation.

Still, i'm not seeing a huge upside here unless you have a VR. I play my PS4 like once a week for a bit... Pretty sure i can have more fun with 399 bucks worth of beer. Maybe if they had a trade in program.

I planned on buying a Neo for Dad Of War, Zero Dawn and UHD player support but without the UHD it's not really worth the price. I'll wait to see the real differences between those two games on the slim compared to the Neo, if they aren't significant I may just buy a used PS4 off craigslist for cheap then resell it when I'm done.

EDIT... I forgot about Bloodborne, if the Neo improves performance there I may grab it.

What's not to get? Physical media is dead. Who still rents or buys Blurays..?

I do. Quality wise streaming is not there yet and won't be for some time. Even 4K Netflix doesn't look as good as a well mastered 1080P Blu-ray.

It's okay, I'm happy to just game on PC. I don't really need a console and will be buying a standalone UHD player at some point instead.

im putting my old ps4 up for sale tomorrow, and hopefully picking up a pro+FF15 bundle when the game launches.

excessive? maybe.... but im seeing original units go for 300-325 that have PT installed on them. so what the hell, ~$75 out of pocket will get me a pro + FF15. im ok with that.

I dont think I will every purchase a disk again. UHD or not. I mean over time I have felt so much $$$ is wasted on a movie that I may or may not ever watch again. I would rather rent and stream it if I want to watch it so desperately. For me not a big deal at all. Heck I haven't even bought a blu-ray in 2-3 years.

People with standards.

Wait just because I choose to stream every thing and rather rent and not invest in a disc that i may or may not watch again. I have some of less standards than you or a person who buys blu-ray or UHD? Talk about judging much?

on the other side. Yes if you want a UHD player 500gb xbox one is a no brainer. For those folks thats a steal. Can't beat it at 299

If you are streaming 4K content you are often getting a drastically less quality experience than one with a disc. That may not matter to you but someone with higher STANDARDS do.

It's one of the reasons why there is a flourishing market for HT gear and why people are investing more and more into a theater like set up.

I doubt it. Yes streaming quality will suffer depending on your connection. Not when you have a 1gig up and down connection and wireless AC all over the house pulling in 400+ over every wireless test and a gig on wired. So yes my standards aren't any less than yours its just that I choose a different route. I don't disagree with people buying UHD by all means enjoy.

Do I want one IDK, but I do plan on getting an xbox slim, but only reason I haven't bought it yet believe it or not is because of the damn white only choice. WTF was microsoft thinking. I don't want a frickin white console sticking out in all black shelves, urrgggh lol

Fragmentation of the consoles. Not to mention Sony dropped the ball in terms of hardware. Will be interesting to see how it works out.

The original PS4 will get obsolete fast.

It's already obsolete I read. Looks like they will be clearing those out. The slim will be replacing the original being the only option. Might be a good time soon to find a deal lol.

It's cool you have a fast connection but it doesn't change the quality of the stored content on the server, nor is it to actually stream an uncompressed UHD movie without letting it buffer. Plus I doubt companies like Netflix would see profit in streaming a 150gb movie either.

I dont think the Slim got a life either. Developers will quickly focus games on the new Pro. Will they run on the original hardware? Maybe, will they run bad? Absolutely. The Wii -> Wii U is a classic example of what will happen. AAA titles, forget it on the old.

In the stream, the content providers was also busy talking about things that will only run on the Pro.

In terms of the Bluray 4K part. If I recall right Bluray 4K is around 128Mbit. The decoder may simply not be able to do that bitrate. But Sony failing with their own format. Ouch.

The new Slim is 165W in terms of specced power consumption. The Pro goes up to 310W. How can it draw so much?

Operating environment temperature also looks quite narrow.

People who want to be able to continue to watch stuff without having to worry about :

A.The internet going down. (Which happens a lot when you are a night owl due to maintenance).
B.The streaming provider removing the show you are watching or other assorted bullshit (such as videos you paid for disappearing ala Amazon).

I don't like relying on the internet for everything because that is putting too many eggs in one basket.

I have a feeling their going to milk the ps4 and xbone for another few years which is sad as their already dated.

It seems you don't actually understand how streaming works. All video streams are compressed which lowers the quality of the video making your internet speed completely irrelevant beyond a certain point. That's just video, audio quality is a whole other issue. If you're using a soundbar or TV speakers then it makes no difference but for anyone with a proper surround sound setup streaming is a major step backwards. So yes, your standards are lower than people who prefer sticking with physical media.

It's not a matter of "judging", since you've already pointed out that your own standards are lower than others.

I've never seen a streaming provider, stream uncompressed 4k video. Hell, they don't even do it with audio. For people who do put money into their HT setups, yes it makes a difference. For example, if I spent $2,500 on a TV, why the hell would I want to watch a low quality streamed version of something on it? Just because you are satisfied with streamed media, doesn't mean everyone else is. Just like there are some people happy with a $20 pair of earbuds, there are others who would consider a $200 pair of headphones to still be on the low end.

i buy blu ray. Mainly kids movies. because of the dvd that come with it to put in my trucks for road trips.
