I currently own a VP2770, but have heard great things about 21:9 (I am a little worried about support for the aspect ratio but I hear overall it is becoming popular) any thoughts on this part?

With my research I have come across these two monitors, and reading about them, it seems like the biggest difference is that the pg348q is simple to use in terms of achieving 100 hz whereas the x34 where you have to overclock it and it may not quite get there. I am obviously a newb and would not even know how to overclock a display, I want to use this for gaming and I would love to be able to reach 100 hz as easily as possible.

is there anything on the near horizon that will trump these two displays, would hate to upgrade and have the titan x of 21:9 monitors come out ;P

I currently own two 970s in sli mode, and will be upgrading to 1080 Ti if/when it comes out. (2 970s should support most games in meantime?)

Thank you in advance for any input!

X34 owner here in high end system (see SIG)

"Over clocking" the x34 simply means opening the on screen menu and selecting 100 hz. There is nothing more complicated to it than that.

Acer had to call it overclocking for marketing and liability reasons because they don't guarantee every x34 will reach 100hz.

Mine runs at 100hz no problems. But some less lucky x34 buyers have reported that when they select 100hz, the screen flashes and craps out and restarts again at 75hz (I think this is the default setting the screen is shipped with). In the menu these users usually report they select 95hz and have no issues (there are multiple hZ choices in the overclocking menu like 80,90,95,100hz)

I've never seen an x34 user report he was unable 95hz. But most of us get 100 no problem.

The only one on the horizon and to be released in November is the X34P which will have same resolution but will use new panels with better control over backlight bleed etc.
Between the two the ASUS has better aesthetics for sure.

You still play the panel lottery in terms of bleed, glow and dead pixels. I recommend the ASUS PG348Q.

X34 User here as well. At the moment would suggest staying with your current monitor as its already 1440p. The upcoming x34P is essentially what the original x34 should have been. New technologies coming in 2017 look very promising regarding 1.3 Displayport which should result in higher refresh rates depending on the panels coming out.

There really isnt going to be much difference between the two, they are the exact same panel.

The Acer X34, Asus PG348q, AND the LG 34uc97-p LG 34UC97 34’’ Cineview Curved Ultrawide 21:9 MAC Compatible/ Thunderbolt LED Monitor IPS 2HDMI WQHD 300 cd/m2 100,000:1 - Newegg.com (the first monitor to use this panel) all use the EXACT same panel.

The LG's is locked at 60hz, you cant even overclock it via nvidia control panel to 61hz without it going crazy. The LG also doesn't have a g-sync module.

I'd agree with the above poster that you aren't going to see any difference between the Asus and the Acer, they both hit 100hz and they both have g-sync modules. The only difference is the stand (which I find to be horrible looking on the Asus).

Like another guy said, if you need something this year, the X34-P is coming out soon and it will have a "native" 100hz (no need to select the overclocking option in the OSD) and better OSD controls. The button controlled OSD on the X34 was heavily criticized but to be honest once you set up the monitor once, you never really have a need to go back in there so its not a big deal. The X34-P is a totally new panel however, it also has a "tighter" (i.e. more) curve to it. Some X34p info:
Acer Predator X34P: 100Hz Curved UltraWide IPS WQHD G-SYNC Gaming Monitor

I never had bleed or IPS glow problems with my X34 (brightness is set to about 48% which is perfect for gaming). I really love the monitor (again Im a high end gamer). But if I didnt need a panel this year, I'd wait to see if the rumored 144hz 34" 3440 x 1440's and/or the 120hz big (37+") 4K panels are going to show up in early 2017.

If I needed a high end gaming panel today, I'd buy the X34 and keep the original box in perfect shape in the attic or closet. Then when/if these fantastic 144hz widescreen or 120hz big 4Ks come out next year, you put your nearly perfect condition X34 on eBay and sell it for a surprisingly high price. I'm amazed at what people will pay for used PC stuff on Ebay. I just sold my intel 5960x on eBay for 761 dollars. It was 1000 new, and can still be found for 1000 new on various websites. Yet someone bought mine (with the original box) for only 240 dollars less than a new one. Same with monitors. If you keep your box and the manuals and the cords, you will recoup a decent amount of your X34 purchase when you replace it next year.

This is always a good site to bookmark and check once a month or so for the upcoming panels:

Went with a X34... Reasons?
-Cool under glow lighting makes typing in low light very easy. It also looks COOL!
-stand looks better
-same panel as the asus so display is the same
-Microcenter is currently running a sale for acer. buy a acer laptop get any acer display for 10% off. been needing a laptop anyways :D

Downsides?
back light bleed on the left side of the display is pretty noticable.
Color accuracy doesn't seem to be as good as my old monitor (dell u2713hm)
Price breaks the camels back.

Also gaming with this thing NEEDS at least a single 980ti. SLI is preferred. A newer 1080GTX would be better. SLI pair of 1080s would be the best way to game with this if you want to take advantage of the full 100hz this panel can offer.

TLDR?
-If your a gamer and want wide screen and also a bit of a power user & mutitasker go for it.
-If you don't game often then skip it and wait for the price to come down on similar displays.

I bought a PG348Q and returned it after 4 days for the X34. Main reasons for me:

The PG348Q had a strange dark line in random spots going on the right side of the screen at 100hz. This would disappear and reappear at random.
The speakers on the PG348Q are inexcusably pathetic. I had them at max and couldn't even hear what was going on. I prefer not to clutter my desk with extra speakers, and the ones in the X34 are great.
The PG348Q has no option to allow charging thru its' USB ports when the monitor is powered off. I entertain a lot, and having people able to plug in their iPhone without turning everything on is really handy.
I use my monitor on a mounting arm, and so the PG348's light feature is useless since it's built into the stand. The X34 has a RGB light strip on the monitor itself which is a nice extra touch.

I agree, the RGB lighting on the x34 is sweet!

I had to return mine since the BLB issue was a bit of a deal breaker for me.

Mine looked similar to this one on the left side:
