Can't wait for a BIOS editor. I am not averse to the hard mod to remove power limit completely (simply bypassing three resistors on the board) but I don't want to take it all apart again for that lol

Asus has already released their XOC bios, but that fixes the voltage in a basic way and designed for watercooling.
Fingers crossed they release a more advanced one, one applied it to their Gigabyte Pascal and seemed to work for them but IMO that is not a good idea unless one knows the rating of the VRM used by the IHV or know that it is designed to be OC.

The Asus XOC BIOS is a strange one. It has no power limit or any thermal throttling (even at the first few boost bin drops in the 50C range), but consistently gets lower bench scores and FPS in games at the same clock speeds as even the FE BIOS.
 
BOOM. Same exact +170/+500 core/VRAM applied to each. Look at how much voltage and clock bounced around before, and how they don't ever budge after :D

And this is just with soldering a small copper wire bridging the RS1, RS2, and RS3 resistors.

Well, in my extremely limited testing with not hitting power limit, instead of bouncing between 0.981v and 1.031v and clocks bouncing between 1965MHz and 2025MHz, I'm getting a sustained 1.062v and 2062MHz while keeping the exact same OC settings, see my Afterburner logs above :)


This is the big problem that I was seeing, it was applying the same clock speed to a very wide array of voltage points, which was causing my card to hard lock. God I'm glad I went ahead and did this mod! :D


They all do close to the same, but some aftermarket cards with higher power limits can sustain slightly higher clocks.

There are a couple of threads on OCN in the Nvidia section about it, a bunch of people verified the same thing I found with it, and it was across several different cards besides the FE.

BIOS was a bust, still ran into the power limit the entire time, and at a slightly lower clock speed, to boot. Go figure. Still just gonna patiently wait for a BIOS mod tool. :(
Late to the party here myself in posting.
The Sea Hawk still seems to have the same voltage behaviour as other BIOS/cards, excluding the Asus XOC and the Galax HoF custom one.
Going by the reviews and their attempts to OC the 1080 Sea Hawk anyway

As for the FE cooler or power delivery not being enough, that is more than likely not the case, the cards are held back almost solely by power limit so long as you can withstand the thunderous roar of the cooler lol, at 100% the card stays around 60C in my case and only dropped two boost bins from temperature, the $60 for the EVGA hybrid CLC was well worth it to get some peace and quiet :)

I'm looking forward to tweaking mine a bit more now that I hard modded the power limit of my card (from 126% peak power usage to 98%), now I have around 265ish watts to play with instead of 217w limit of the FE BIOS.

I doubt it is locked but I think you are being funny :)

But you accept something is strange when someone on a different 1080 manufacturer card (example was MSI) cannot set the V parameter in same way as Dancop when both are using the same Afterburner version.

For FE it is not the power delivery but the increase voltage to the GPU, this puts further stress on the VRM and also greater heat.
That increase is quite substantial (relative to normal draw) as you need to consider power loss within the VRM-power stage and GPU leakage when pushing it near the top of its performance scaling, so better cooling is needed for all these components.

The problem is that these cards may use different PWM controllers and different VRM-power stages.
This is further compounded with how Boost3 now works.

Which brand to choose from. EVGA FTW, Gigabyte G1, ASUS Strix or Zotac Amp Extreme for an Sli config?
 
With the the G1, STRIX, and AMP cards, some are almost 2.5 or 3 pci-e slots wide, so take that into consideration... the eVGA and MSI will be the thinnest if your slot spacing is narrow. It seems any 1080 is roll of the dice pretty much. Some of the enclosed water cooled cards (MSI Sea hawk and eVGA hybrid) if you have room for the radiators might be nice due to getting that heat out of the case. Or the FE if you don't mind some fan noise..

edit: with the Asus X99 Deluxe you should be good on slot spacing unless you have other cards (sound, ssd,) to mix in.

I can verify this is repeatable. Bumped 3dmark ultra about 500 pts at the same settings (5200 -> 5700.). I could break 6k if I cared, not into tweaking just for benchmarks right now.

OK, I keep hearing about this Asus XOC BIOS and that Asus themselves released it, but I can't find any official statement or even a forum post from Asus about this. Where and when did Asus release this BIOS? It sounds interesting....

It will flash to any other 1080, but for some reason, even though it has no thermal, power, or voltage limits, it will allow higher clocks but performance is always lower on any card except for Strix and Strix OC. It's almost as if it lists higher clock speeds than it is actually running.
 
Yeah I would keep it within Asus custom 1080 cards only, and even a well known OC says the same.

As I say, it is a pretty crude approach but possibly done this way to overcome some Boost3 algorithm behaviour until they become more familiar with it, and also more designed for water block rather than air, so again shows this is more for the more extreme overclocker.

Galax HoF also has their custom bios and found a reference once but cannot remember where, annoying even to me that I did not bookmark it :)

On my FE 1080, I was getting 2070 but would quickly drop to just under 2000 once temps got into the upper 70's. I picked up the EVGA Hybrid cooler and now it's maintaining an OC of 2113 while being quiet and cool.

Does that clock sustain for a long gaming session? Or we talking 3dmark benches?
 
Installation was a lot more involved than I expected, only go to run Heaven and play about 30 minutes of Doom (in 4k max settings)before having to get to work (from home) and the clock rate was sustained. Temps in the 40s.

ASUS Strix +220 core, +420 memory. 80c steady with 65% fan at 2050

I picked up a Stock clocked ASUS Strix from Microcenter over the tax free weekend. While the online images of the box shows OC on them, in the store it wasn’t. Asus Tweak utility errors out on install, I had it previously installed and the fix to install it again is to reinstall Windows (yeah right!). EVGA PrevisionX to the rescue. I’m scoring about 16335 Firestrike (free) vs my 980ti 15226. Thinking it’s my 4.4ghz 2700k holding me back if those numbers are low? Odd thing with 3D Mark is sometimes it shows 850 core 933 memory, other runs 2050 core 933memory. Confusing.
 
It seems like I am getting artifacts in the Valley benchmark with memory over 100+ and crashes with the Core over +75 or so. I didn't increase the voltage but I cranked the power target to max. Do I need to push the voltage as well?

Temperatures are totally fine so I'm not sure why it's doing so badly with the OC. If I use the default OC profile which is apparently Boost: 1936 MHz / Base: 1784 MHz it seems fine.

Gigabyte XTREME Gaming 1080.

EDIT: I think maybe I'm reading the program wrong...those must be offsets from the OC boost because I can run Valley and I'm getting ~2.1 GHz on the core and ~10.2 GHz on the memory despite the "boost" clock being lower than that. I guess those numbers seem pretty respectable.

Lowering it down to 2025 removed all visible anomalies in Valley, but in FO4, while the artifacts are mostly gone, it still occasionally pops up. Only after lowering the core to 2000 do I not see any artifact in FO4. I tried it with or without memory OC, and got the same result. It's weird that it's the core OC that caused the artifacts, not memory OC.

Final result: 2000 core / 5450 mem steady state while in game, 70C @ 66% fan. Ambient temperature is about 75F.

I don't think I've seen any 1080 that had such a low OC. Did I get a dud? :(

At what voltage? It took removing power limit for me to hold a steady 1.093v to get a stable 2100 when temperature is good. Before, voltage would bounce around and keep the same clock and would be unstable around 2000

I maxed out the power and voltage sliders in Afterburner (108 power, +100% voltage). I later lowered the voltage limit to +75% once I settled on 2000.

How did you remove the power limit?

Voltage percents don't matter, what is the actual voltage? Is it stable? Post a screenshot of the afterburner log during gameplay if you can.

Removing power limit requires a hard mod.

I can't remember what the actual voltage was. I'll have to look when I get home. I don't think I want to do a hard mod though.

Unfortunately a BIOS mod is taking significantly longer than with Maxwell (was less than two months) and I don't see any progress made on that front, so who knows when one will be available, so hard mods might be the only way to go.

Just checked. It looks like the voltage is pegged at 1.081V under load.
 
I got a mild overclock on my MSI Gaming X cards.

Power Limt: 115
Core Clock: +110
Mem Clock: +100
Fan Speed: 90

Getting sustained 2025 in game.

Weird thing, I started overclocking while testing DOOM Vulkan, and it's a LOT more forgiving for aggressive clocks (+190 core, +500 memory). Then I tried Bioshock Infinite DX11 and had to dial it WAY down to get rid of these sparkly artifacts.

AFAIK my buddy SVL7 was the first to unlock Kepler and Maxwell vbios mods that had no boost and power limit. After some people stole his work, he left the scene. Probably why it's taking so long for Pascal vbios to come out (if ever). If anyone cracks it anytime soon, it will be a guy named Prema.

Unfortunately, overclocking is always a gamble. Sometimes you win, some times you lose.

if you're not against it, i suggest removing the cooler and taking a look, maybe the VRMs don't have good contact with the heatsink, maybe the paste isn't well applied.

How are your temps ? Some chips can be particularly sensitive to temperature, does it behave any differently if you max out the fan ? At the end of the day it's very possible that you're unlucky and your chip tops out at ~1900mhz, it's still only around 5/6% lower than average.

I can tell you that I can run 1500/8000 @ 1.221v all day long if the temps are below 65c. Above 65c there are increasing chances that it will crash, at 70c it's guaranteed to crash.

nah im not going to remove stuff.

temps below 70. my previous card was an insane coil whine ACX3 (not SC,FTW, just basic) that could do like 2170 if i remember correctly.
 
Strangely, the overclock killed performance in Dying Light. On stock I was getting around 75-80 FPS, with the OC only 40-45 FPS.

Even in the games it was working on, I was barely getting 2 - 3 FPS boost anyhow, so I'll just return back to stock for now.

Got it a couple hours ago so I only tested heaven so far, holds 2038 - 2050 boost with the default curve, 2050 all the time with fans at 70%

How did you increase the power limit to 130%. Is it a bios mod. I know both Afterburner and Precision top out at 120%

He clearly said "EVGA 1080 FTW" and those have 130% power limit. Also their base TDP is 215 watts to begin with instead of 180.
