4k video cards

Got a 4k TV recently and it just doesn't seem like two card solutions are even worth it anymore. Right now Im rocking a dual R9 290 setup but so many games don't support 2 cards. Am I stuck waiting for the 1080 to get back into stock or is there a better unseen option?

It depends on the game and how far you sit from the TV. You might not need anti-aliasing, for example.
 
i'm at 4k and if possible i usually turn off aa for more frames. i'm happy with my aib 1070 at this resolution. a cheaper 980ti would perform similarly for less.
 
I usually turn off AA and while it does help I think my 4gb single card limit is what is killing me. While I have 0 issues with xfire in GTA V theres a slight lag in doom @4k with a single 290. Im I was thinking of a 980ti but does it keep a steady 60fps? I've already got half the cost of a 1080(dat zotac though). Im willing to put up with it for a little while longer to sort this out.
 
i got the 1070 because i'm expecting a 1080 ti to show up. got burned with the 980 last gen. you're not going to have 60frames hard locked in doom but i think its pretty close. haven't played it in a week since i reinstalled wolfenstein.

well i booted up doom and played for about an hour. with the game maxed out including aa, my mildly oc'd 1070 held 2070mhz with peaks into 2100mhz and i still saw sustained moments of 30+ frames. if the reviews are right that there are only fractional differences between the 1070 and 980ti, then i suspect the ti would have periodic forays into the 30s as well.

jumped in under vulcan and the game still drops to the 40's.

Thanks. I may wait a while longer and let vulkan/the 10xx series mature a little before making my choice.
 
The 1070 has the least amount of value drop if you choose to wait.

If anything matching a Titan X is released this year and you buy a 1080, you're going to cry.
1080 values will dive (because of the usual Nvidia price cut when a Ti is released) and very few people will be willing to buy it from you.

Could always look at an EVGA 1070. You'd have 90 days to decide if it fits your needs with their upgrade program. Could bump up to a 1080 with the cost difference. Not saying the best choice per se but if you are waffling between a 1070 and 1080 this is not a bad option.
 
I was kind of in the same boat as you with 2 290x's and just frustration. I am pretty happy with a single 980ti which is pretty close to a 1070 gtx, but maxing out settings at 4k is not really where these are good, but games can still be fun, or you might try 1440p on the other hand you can pretty much max anything out. The new Titan X (pascal) overclocked can do this to 4k, according to guru3d, but you are looking at $1300, which is basically the same cost as 1080's in sli.
 
If you are willing to turn down a couple of settings (like AA), 4K should be definitely doable with a single GTX 1080. That's what I'm doing anyway.
 
Im gonna bump this thread. I've decided that I can do medium settings @4k. So Im aiming at a 1070. Ill go sli near future if I really need it or I can find a good deal on a second. Is the founders edition worth it? it seems to be the only card in the area I can find.
 
the $450 fe's online aren't exorbitantly more expensive than an aib 1070. my g1 is still $430@ the egg. i'd have a hard time forking over for a brick and mortar fe if it were more than $450.
 
fuck those taxes kill me. I got a zotac 1070 amped from amazon(2 fan not 3 fan) I love that style but those taxes man. I really hate VA.

the R9 290 cannot run the TV at 4K anyway as it doesn't have HDMI 2.0 support.

Are you using Vulkan or OpenGL? Also, the R9 290 can run the TV at 4k but, through the HDMI port, it would be only at 30hz. To be able to get 60hz, you would need to buy a Display Port to HDMI 2.0 adapter. Personally, I would just buy the adapter and be content with what you already have.

Oh well, enjoy it then. :) Hope you are able to get something back on your R9 290's. (I am not interested in them but, what models do you have?) I already have a Sapphire R9 Fury Nitro+.
 
I had the sapphire tri-x r9 290's. It preforms so much better and @ 4k@60 hz I dont need any extra adapters and its way cooler in there. just need to figure out why my tv still has a weird connection issue with my computer.
