It won't install for me. Thread exception not handled error during install after 2 reboot, then uninstall and repairs itself (even at stock everything). Dunno, will wait till later I suppose.

Getting a weird error after installing 1607. Windows Update is prompting me to give my Windows Insider settings attention. I've never been an insider with this install. That message shouldn't be there since I've never adjusted Insider settings.

eh i got the same thing.....but i have been insider as well....lol it never said what the attention actually was so it doesnt bother me and i think its just advertising the hole insider thing

I don't get the reference, and my curiousity has finally exceeded my shame. What is the reference? I liked 10240 and 10586 for build numbers. I didn't get 14393 (or 14393.75).

The Win10 Anniversary Update build is actually 14393.5, and:

I installed the update today and I already cant stand the start menu. The old one wasn't great, but it feels like Microsoft pushed back a little to the 8 menu than to the 7 menu.

So..........Stop using the built in start menu:). I stopped using it well before the first beta was half way thru. It sucked then and hasn't got any better lol (And i doubt it ever will for desk tops) StartIsBack is best money i ever spent!

Why cant they just stop trying to push the 8 style start button on us... they had something close to good enough this feels like they are trying to step people out of the old design slowly the next update in a couple months will probably change it again and soon we will be back to only tablet mode and people will be up in arms making 3rd party fixes :banghead:

Microsoft has lost their Ball(mer) apparently. They seem to tick all the wrong boxes and try to downgrade even the bits that they got right with Win10.

It looks more and more that Microsoft wants to create a centrally controlled crowd spying console out of Win10. The drive to force users to Win10, forced Cortana listening you 24/7 along with keyloggers etc... That stuff is like from a bad conspiracy spirited sci-fi movie.

The next will come Facebook integration to the OS so you get the full big brother experience.

they called it skype...

hating the start menu change because of the 'all apps' column.
i'm able to disable the 'most used' choices but this will force me to use 3rd party app

At first I didn't like it but I do now. One less click to get to it. So basically the stuff on the far right is the stuff that used to be on the far left in Windows 7, then next All Programs and some groups like Recently Added and Most Used and the tiles. Pretty clean and intuitive. The thing that I think needs to come next is some type of folder system for tiles.

1607 installed - didn't mean to do it but it was 50% through the pre-install tasks (quiescing downloaded files?) by the time I realized it was the anniversary update so I just let it finish. Thankfully things seem to be working normally on the gaming rig post install after a few tweaks. I have to say the dark theme (app mode) is really nice. I kind of liked the old start menu better but this new one is growing on me a little. Still poking around on it.

Came back from vacation and it installed automatically for me. I don't mind it. I'm not sure why they feel Windows Defender needs to run via startup, but otherwise I don't mind anything from the update.
I actually like that the start menu skips straight to your program list now. That was always a gripe of mine to begin with.
If they'll ever let us manage those damned modern/metro apps in the list I'll be 100% satisfied with the UI (finally).

Well, it always has ran. It's just the UI portion now auto loads. It actually used to be this way early on in 10's original preview then they removed the UI from auto starting.

Same thing here on my work laptop. My home desktop installed with no issues on its own. When I check for updates on my work laptop it says that its up to date.

I ended up uninstalling it from my laptop just to restore battery life (Still a no go on my main rig). It went from a 4 hr battery life back to 12hrs. For me, the update is not fully baked yet. I was looking forward to the features though. oh well. Will wait a little longer.

Not sure on feature list yet but for those having trouble with 1607 it may be worth trying again. That's a hefty jump.

Microsoft really doesn't care what you think about the start menu. There were many complaints during insider testing. Classic Shell 4.3 makes it the way I like it

Forgive my ignorance but what is the difference between 14393.51 and 1607? What do these numbers represent?

the 14XXX is for insider preview and the 1607 is for retail copies. they represent build versions.

1607 is the version number; the numbers represent that it was finalized on July 16 (16 = day, 07 = month).
14393.51 is the build number. The version number is still 1607 but each update advances the build number.

Windows 10 is now using version major numbers in the form of YY/MM (last two digits of the year and two digit month) based on the date of release of that version. 14393.3 was the first generally released minor version release of 1607. Through the life of 1607 the build will be 14393.xx with xx incrementing with each cumulative update release.

Partially correct. The Insider Preview does utilize only the build number, but the release version includes both the release date and build. The build number changes on the release version as well, not just on the Insider Preview. 1607 went gold with 14393.5 then went to 14393.10 then 14393.51.

yeah its a little confusing. my watermark says 14393.rs1_release.160715-1616. I just update when it says to and have never really paid any attention to the numbers.

Just reinstalled the new update on the laptop and it seems to have fixed my battery issue. So far, so good.

How does Microsoft roll out stuff like the Anniversary update? Is it like Google and Android updates, where 5% get it the first day, then 10% etc with 100% of clients being offered the update after a couple of weeks?

I ask because I have 3 windows 10 computers in the house, 2 desktops on Pro and a laptop on home. I've deferred the update on the desktops, with the intention of seeing how I feel about the changes on the laptop (which I don't care too much about hosing) before I commit to them on the desktops, and the Anniversary update just isn't appearing.

I know I can manually download it when I'm ready to test it and don't want to wait, but I was just curious.

Good question. I've never seen the deployment process explained but yeah, it's in waves. My Surface Book got it on day one. My Surface 3 (non-pro) never got it automatically and I manually upgraded it. Neither did any of my other Atom tablets.

I'm not sure either. My home desktop got it pretty much the moment it was released. My work laptop and Surface Pro 4 never got the auto update. I manually updated my work laptop and im waiting to see how long it will take on my surface pro 4.

When the OS first came out they said that update rollouts had to do with how new the device is (not sure how they define that) and what region it's based in.

I've installed 1607 on a few PCs now. The only one that gave any trouble at all is my main gaming rig. It didn't like the non-Microsoft-recommended way that I have a Win10 boot SSD and a Win7 boot SSD on that rig so it would fail when it rebooted during the install. The solution was to disconnect all but the Win10 boot SSD.

If the update is failing and not giving you any error codes or hints as to what's going wrong, download the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool, use it to download the ISO, then double-click the ISO and install the update from there. Doing that, I got the error code I needed which let me search for the solution.

is it confirmed that I can download the W10 iso and use my Windows 7 key?...meaning I can still get a free install even though the free upgrade date is technically over...I'm getting a strange itch to actually use Windows 10 on a spare hard drive I have (with a legit separate W7 key from my main system)...

Correct, doing a full/scratch install of Win 10 with your Win 7/8.x key is still legit. The free upgrade was for people installing Win 10 upgrade from inside their existing Windows installation.

Another problem I'm experiencing after this update!

I have some weirs stuff with 368.81 driver after latest Win10 update (I don't know if that's the reason).

I'm using game profiles in control panel and strangely enough they seem to be not working right. Here are few examples:
1) For CS:GO in cp I turn off vsync, set highest available refresh rate, maximum performance and ULMB as monitor technology;
2) In F4 I set V-sync and refresh rate to be application-controlled (for ingame vsync to work and cap my fps to 60 as it's supposed to be), maximum performance and g-sync is already default;

Issues:
1) For some strange reason monitor doesn't switch to ULMB automatically after start and no matter what I do with V-sync my fps is capped at 60. If I set it to fast it caps to 120ish but ULMB mode doesn't turn on (shows g-sync). it's like the panel settings have no effect!
2) Instead of 60fps cap it caps to 120, again, like no effect from settings.

I didn't spot that initially cause been playing W3 most of the time, but wanted to play a round of CS and noticed that weird stuff. I recalled that the only thing that changed recently - was that Win10 anniversary update.
Before that my monitor was switching mods correctly and games were working fine.

Does anybody have the same problem?

Before anybody asks - I tried DDU. No result, same troubles.

does Windows Update with Windows 10 Home Edition forcefully install video card drivers as well?...hopefully not

It's back to good old Win95 times where you had to reinstall the OS frequently. Only now you'll have to reset your computer to pre-update conditions and redo when the update is forced lol.

Hello, I let my surface book update first to see if there was any untoward behavior/severe bugs and encountered none, next updated the G750JH with similar results but also tested some games such as Civilization V, Battlefield 4, DOOM 4 and World of Warships. All of those work fine on both the G750jh (i7 haswell quad, 24GB ddr3, 780m) and my Gigabyte GA-X99P SLI with a 5930k in it with 4 16GB gskill ddr4 3,000mhz dimms, 980ti, works fine. Imaged everything with Shadowprotect before though and stuck them on the freenas in case shtf, but no shtf yet. Only thing I vehemently dislike is time and date aren't in the absolute bottom right corner anymore, going to have to investigate windows themeing for the first time in ~15 years to get that back, stupid empty text bubble usurped my clock's spot and it's kind of irrational level of rage at that.

Installed it on my home computer and work laptop. Worked fine, but man it takes a long time to install. I installed it on a client computer and it uninstalled Trend Micro Worry-Free and replaced it with Windows Defender.

EDIT: Also killed RSAT, getting the new version now.

Kind of true :p
Luckily restoring an image is about 10x as fast as reinstalling a whole OS/programs/settings from scratch. I'm back up and running after about 2 hours and I don't even have to do anything.
Reinstalling Win95/98 every 3-4 months was torture.
