NVIDIA Announces The New Titan X

By all means do whatever floats your boat, and maybe 5X is different in this regard but I know on my 970 overclocking the memory does next to nothing for more performance except an easy way to introduce glitch/artifacts. I got far more out of cranking power and voltage to the max and chasing core clock speed.

If you unlock your power limit there's no reason not to. I never had much luck on Maxwell but on Pascal I can OC the memory. It also differs game to game. You can't really trust firestrike because it doesn't use much VRAM.

If you don't unlock power limit a VRAM overclock could cause your card to throttle the core... VRAM OC helps a little but not as much as the core.

That seems like you may have a problem card...mine doesn't get that hot in SLI (mild OC: +140 MHz Core Clock).
Maybe? But I am playing on a 144hz monitor and Overwatch @ Epic settings will push that 100% of the time, what games are you playing and what refresh rate?

There's been a bit of debate recently over whether it'd actually help in gaming, certainly with what's out right now.

I think when DX12 games really mature, being able to really fully saturate a card's bandwidth will become a thing and HBM will have its time I'd say...

ARK @ 1440p/144Hz - game doesn't budge past 60 FPS much even with TITAN X (Pascal) but it's 100% utilizing one GPU. I'm basically playing single card because I have not enabled the SLI "hack".

Nvidia's compression techniques mean that HBM2 wouldn't have nearly the benefit you think it would. You're already getting better-than-specced memory performance.

I did some testing in Tomb Raider with the 1080 and I went +10%/-10% OC and got something like +3%/-6% performance. VRAM sat between 6-7.8GB depending on the scene. So nVidia definitely put it into diminishing returns land for VRAM bandwidth. Going on that curve +20% would give you +4.5%, +30% would be 5.25%, +40% OC would be ~5.5%.

And leldra has pointed out the Titan X (Pascal) has 8% more bandwidth per performance. So the Titan is even less constrained.

nVidia isn't stupid. They aren't going to add a part that has limited supply and extra cost for negligible gains. That was my problem with the Fury X months and months before it launched. It didn't make sense.

What's your fan curve?

For that matter, what fan curve are you guys running? I'm going to try this out today - just made it a bit more aggressive.

Mine looks like sk3tch's, though I should flatten it out near the top end. During a long gaming session with RotTR it will be running at 94% fan with the core holding just about 79C.

Yeah, that's definitely the impression I'm getting.

The Fury X with HBM would have only made sense if the performance justified it, which we all saw it totally didn't. And even if it did, then you'd find 4GB is not enough. HBM on that card made no sense from any consumer perspective. HBM will get here when it's needed, but right now it's not evidently.

So, they are using an internal unreleased build of MSI Afterburner to unlock voltage control. Sounds promising.

Ordered EK block and backplate tonight. Haven't watercooled my video card(s) since I had 5870 CFX, but this board really seems like it will benefit with the way GPU Boost is working. And I'm already in it for $1200, might as well :)
 
We've been over this many times both in this thread and others.


1.) The 980ti launched as a Nvidia overreaction to AMD's upcoming Fiji XT (Fury X). They wanted to beat AMD's much rumored upcoming flagship before it came to market with better performance and a lower price. The 980ti may have eventually come anyway, but it would definitely have been more expensive and probably clocked lower.

2.) This time around, AMD doesn't really have anything to counter the 1080. Vega will come along at some point, but a brief google of rumors suggests 2017/2018. If a 1080ti performing within 5% of Titan X comes out in 8 months to counter Vega, that is fine. I just had 8 months of 4k gaming with good framerates I otherwise wouldn't have had, and even so, in 8 months I will still have the fastest GPU on the market, if only by 5%.

3.) The Pascal Titan X is the first Titan of the 16nm die shrink. If it is anything like 28nm it will be with us for a while. I bought the original Titan right at the beginning of the 28nm GPU era. it blew away GTX 680's, it was significantly faster than GTX 780's, it traded blows with 780ti's and was within single digits of 980's in most tests. It wasn't until the 980ti was launched that there was something significantly faster. While I had some $1000 GPU sized buyers remorse when I first bought it on launch in 2013, it turned out to be one of my better GPU buys, and lasted me longer than any other GPU I've ever owned, when I finally upgraded to dual 980ti's in August of last year and handed the original Titan down to my stepson.

So, you are right. Things COULD turn out the way they did with the Maxwell Titan X, and then - in hindsight - it may not seem like the best of buys. With AMD's competition being the way it is, this - however - seems unlikely, at least for a while yet. Or they could turn out the way they did with the Kepler Titan, and it can be another extraordinarily good buy that lasts for 2.5 years without feeling tired compared to other GPU's out there. Or something else could happen all together.

We don't know. These things are always a gamble. Experience has taught me that fretting about it, and wringing hands just leads to unwarranted anxiety and unhappiness with ones rig. I don't believe in the perfect timing of buying something. There is always something new looming on the horizon, and you can't play games today on a GPU you buy tomorrow.

What I do know is this. The Pascal Titan X is the ONLY single GPU that comes even close to providing a decent gaming experience at 4k. With everything else, framerates are just too damned low, or you need to go SLI/Crossfire, with all the problems that come along with that.

I'm building my system today, and I want something that can power my 4k screen. I very much doubt a 1080ti is coming out in the near future, but even if it does, I'll deal. It will likely still be the GPU best suited to my needs of single GPU 4k gaming.

Interesting points. If they sold it at the usual Canadian online retailers and had custom models, I'd be OK to get a pair for $1200 USD each.

Buying from nvidia.com I have to pay an extra 9.5% tax, but my main issue is the cooler. I'm really enjoying the silent open-air cooler on my custom GTX 1080's right now. I wouldn't mind a 20-30% fps increase though.

Is everyone here boosting to 2000 MHz on their Titan X Pascals with SLI and reference coolers? What do they boost to stock?

I'm not able to get mine to 2 GHz, but I'm still dialing it in. It boosts between 1600 and 1700 MHz completely stock. It goes up to 1823 MHz by just increasing the power and temp targets to maximum and using an aggressive fan curve.

The EK block is the last thing I'm waiting for to get my first WC build up and running so I am excited.

This being my first WC build you'll probably be up and running before I am, as I still ahve to figure out routing, where to place my bleed, drain fill ports etc, but I have a pretty good plan. May require some case modding though.

Mine hits just over 2000 (2002? I can't remember) every once in a while with +160 (which seems to be my max at stock voltage with stock cooler, and we can't change voltage yet) but then settles in at 1987. Once we get voltage control (reportedly in an upcoming Afterburner release) I'm hoping to hit higher. With my EK block (when it arrives) and voltage control I'm hoping for some kickass clocks, though I feel the +20% power limit is going to be a big limitation until we have bios customization.

I would like to keep fan noise reasonable and I have two slots separating the cards.

I'm just trying to estimate the performance increase I would get going from my 2x GTX 1080 AMP! Extreme at stock OC (boosts to 1987 MHz and 5400 MHz VRAM) to 2x TITAN X Pascal + OC.

When I did my first overclock attempt, I maxed the fan at 100% just to test the max overclock I could achieve. It was indeed on the loud side, (but not as bad as I had expected compared to some older blower style cards I've had over the years. My GTX470 was an INSANE hairdryer but also the best overclocker I've had in recent years)

Since then I've kept the same overclock and left it on default fan profile. Clocks stay the same. I can't remember the fan speed though, but it wasn't loud.

Each card is going to be different, but just based on the fact that this is the performance I'm getting, and it appears to be lower overclocking than many out there, I don't think 1900 is an unreasonable goal without insane fan speeds at all.

It will really depend on what you are running and how it loads your card. If you are like me, and run adaptive vsync at 60hz, only the tough scenes will fully load the card, the easier scenes will have it cruising and downclocking because it doesn't need all the power to exceed 60fps.

In my opinion the fan isn't too noisy even at 100%. In terms of db it's loud, but It's more of a whooshing sound than the whining sound of the blower on the Mitan that got on my nerves. The fan speed you'll need will also vary depending on your environment. In my case I am replacing my... case... very soon since it's beat up and the fan controller isn't working too well anymore. I also sit my case on the tile floor and set my A/C to around 78-80F during the summer to try and save some money on electricity (I live in South Florida).

They're usually at max GPU usage because I'm aiming for 144 fps @ 7680x1440.

Well, that's the tricky part about fan noise. Everyone use environment is different. Some have cases that dampen the sound pretty well, other have other noise sources that drown out the fans, some have very insulating headphones, some have hard floors that create an echo, etc. etc.

I've noticed that I am less bothered by a pitchless whoosh than I am by a pitched whine, and in that regard the new Titan X cooler is actually pretty good.

I've got a bit of a dog of a Titan XP I'd say. Scraping just below 2000mhz on stock. Can't go past 2050mhz on water! :eek:

Hasn't been over 42°c at all to date though, so got loads of thermal headroom. I'm hoping we can get close to 1.2v vGPU via software on a Titan XP at the very least.

I gotta say though, having spent $1,200 on a graphics card, an enthusiast part, I fucking expect nvidia to provide overclocking tools, especially as overclocking was specifically mentioned in their advertising literature I believe... :rolleyes::sour::punch:

I think with a good water block and some voltage tweaks even the poor overclockers might wind up being screamers, if we don't run up against the 120% power limit.

I don't hit it, it never clocks down, that's the thing...

I might've mentioned this elsewhere, but the biggest advantage I've seen from watercooling is this consistency of clock. It just doesn't budge. I've read people say that over time in gaming they see their clocks tend to fall a bit, like up to ~100mhz or so, despite the core temp staying well below 84°C, let alone 90°C. Apparently it's Boost 3.0 at play due to the whole board, gpu, memory, vrms getting hot, becoming power inefficient, voltage drops due to increased resistance and thus then the core frequency drops to compensate. This doesn't happen on water since all that heat is being sapped away.

250w TDP on that thing being cooled by the same blower on a card with almost half the core count... :confused:

I mean I'm not serious, but there is actually a serious case here if nvidia don't provide, officially, the tools required to do with the card what they advertised the card would do... :cautious:

No, but Jacob did say on the EVGA forums that they were only in the early stages of development. I would not expect it for awhile. NZXT said that they were going to be testing fitment of the G10, so there is that.
 
I'm sure the power limit will be defeated by a modded vbios in due time.
 
Just realized I did not have my temperature target set to 90. That helped with OCs a bit. Currently at +190/+500 which seems stable in Overwatch. Will try some GTA V later to really push the card. Overwatch is only hitting around 80-90% GPU usage for a consistent 144fps @ 1440. GPU clock in game holds stable around 1930MHz, definitely limited by temperature. Fan is at 80% and I don't really want to go louder even with headphones.

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm going with the EVGA Titan X hybrid kit once they release it. This card is begging for it.
