Asus VGA warranty sticker on screw

So I just bought a new Asus VGA in the last few days. Surprise, there is a sticker on one of the screw on the back of the card. My last Asus VGA was an HD 6950 and they did not put a warranty void sticker on the screw back then. I know MSI did the same thing nowadays but they assured you (a mod from MSI forum) that they would still honor the warranty even if the sticker is broken unless there is physical damage to the card due to HSF removal. Now, with Asus's terribad track record of it's RMA department, what do you guys think of this? What if 2 years down the road you need to reapply the TIM, does removing the HSF void your warranty?

ASUS has bad enough RMA support as it is, I wouldn't mess with the screw while its under warranty since removing the cooler voids it. If the card isn't defective, there is no reason to remove the TIM in two years to replace it. You almost never "need" to reapply the TIM.

I feel like I should return the Asus and wait for other brands to arrive (eVGA, Gigabyte, Zotac...) There's absolutely nothing wrong with the card, it's just Asus's reputation and the sticker really give me uneasy feelings.

EVGA's hardware is sometimes mediocre and they are selling you on service. If it's worth it to you than go for it. If EVGA didn't completely mail it in with the 1070 SC I likely would have bought one. Just couldn't bring myself to spend $440 on a 1070 SC when $10 more got a full custom PCB from ASUS with RGB LEDs, improved power phases, better cooler, fan headers, backplate...

Meanwhile EVGA strapped a fairly ugly cooler onto a reference PCB and pushed it out the door with their name on it so it sells. But at least people with those ugly cards have better warranty support on the lower chance something fails.

You can always contact their support and see if it voids the warranty. A lot of the companies say it wont when applying waterblocks as long as you put the original cooler back on when RAing. Some mention using pliers to turn the screw so as to not break the seal on the sticker. Generally if temps are good then no need to worry. I am a bit of a control freak so I did change mine on a XFX 290, of course they said it was ok even though it has that same sticker.

It voids the warranty. If you contact support now and they say it's fine, they can still be bitches about it in two years and make someone's life hell. People have a hard enough time with ASUS RMA once in a while, no one wants to get into a finger pointing "But two years ago you said I could" discussion with them.

ASUS rma is lazy, sucks, unprofessional.

Years ago I had to return a motherboard BRAND NEW. They made me a nightmare and after almost 4 weeks fighting they sent a replacement to the WRONG address.

Just ridiculous.

Void warranty stickers are actually illegal in the United States, been that way for decades. Most ppl don't realize this and manufacturers take much advantage of this little known Fed law. The Magnuson Moss Act is however huge in the auto industry so you might have run across it there. Still, you have to be careful because you might find yourself in a fight vs their rma dept. It's better to return that Asus card and get one from a brand that recognizes the illegality of the stickers at least in the US, such as MSI, XFX, EVGA and some others.

ASUS rma dept: "Where's the 2nd warranty sticker? Denied!"

And after looking around, Asus is the only one that is available around the DFW for $649, and they're flying off the shelves too: 10 available yesterday and 1 today. Only other option is eVGA & Zotac Founders Edition for $699. I will not pay more for less :mad::mad:. Amazon and newegg is pretty much being dominated by 3rd party sellers gouging people.

I'd be surprised if Zotac is around for another three years. They seems stuck where the old BFG graphics card company was. They do much better overseas, eventually they may just pull out.

Zotac has a 5 year warranty, Asus has 2! I had a very bad experience trying to RMA my broken Asus Xonar Essence ST sound card, after a month of fighting with them they send me back the same broken card and told me its not covered under warranty!

Good to know.

Not really on topic, but Zotac warranty is 2 years standard with an additional year if you register within 30 days.

*Knock on wood*

I always hear about ASUS reputation regarding RMA's but luckily I've never had an ASUS product fail on me.

A 5870, 7970, a 1080p monitor, dual band router, and recently a 1070.

I tried to break away from ASUS and briefly had a Gigabyte 970 before the 1070. ASUS put out a nice design this generation with the Strix and IMO is better looking than the EVGA coolers. Maybe next time EVGA. It's was close this time for sure.

In two years you won't reapply the TIM, you will blow out the dust and sell it so you can upgrade. I say leave it and don't worry about it.
If it frys, just RMA it.

This is probably moot at this point, but I just thought I'd add that Gigabyte doesn't tend to put stickers on their products either.

indeed. don't make things any more difficult. best to hope you never need RMA service, let alone tamper with a silly "warranty void if you access this screw" sticker.

I can personally testify that MSI honors warranty even if the stickers are missing or damaged.

I have RMA'd about 12 times for MSI video cards (litecoin mining) and I had removed the stickers and hsfs and reapplied thermal paste on them. MSI never said a word about the missing stickers.

May be that's why the MSI GTX 1080 costs $730 while the Asus GTX 1080 costs only $650 :p. I decided to stick with the Asus & leave the damn sticker alone. Let's hope I don't have to RMA it 3 years down the road.

The screw sit flush with the backplate (like countersunk screw) so pliers are pretty much useless.

Yeah, it was my fault. MSI's marketing team factored the cost of the 12 fans in when I had RMA'd those gpus for dead fans.

I notice your comment didn't have any personal experience about the sticker. Valuable contribution, thanks!

Are you having a bad day? Because it seems so, lol.

Dude, really...

what's that supposed to mean? The entire purpose of a warranty is to provide assurance to the consumer that the product will function correctly for the stated period of time. This includes fans. Many of the fans on video cards are replaceable and serviceable. I have cleaned many gpu fan bearings. It helps prolong their useful life. I even bought some fans from ali-express to replace them on my own. Some of the video cards however, had custom connectors (would have had to splice the wiring) and I couldn't buy the exact same (or compatible) fans to replace them on my own.

I have a fucking desk fan at work that's been spinning correctly for 9 years. I'd say the fault is with MSI if they want to provide fans which are not built for lasting 3 years.

yes, I am. sorry.
