No Man's Sky - a procedurally generated sand box space exploration game

Has it been stated if this is and persistent online universe? strictly off-line? Or a hinted where you play off-line but system names are shared online

Very low expectations. Sounds like the same pitch as Spore....

Somewhat.

EVE Online has existed a long time already and has the multiplayer PVP thing down for a long time if you like abuse along these lines.

I never was too into it myself these days with the time requirements involved in training most things.

I played it a bit long ago, was even funny when I did not play it for about 5 years once and went out in another ship and barely managed to sneak out with some stored mining droids that were not technically in the game anymore, and sold them for a ton on the market.

I'd stored them in a station that was pretty much the wild wild west when the game had come out and didn't even realize that when the game came out.

Was surprised they were even still there, the database is pretty old on Eve Online apparently.

Good, now console peasants will test the game before we spend our hard earned cash on this. If it's bad it shall not defile my holy library of awesome PC games.

so what is the grand reward for getting to the center of the universe?...something epic right?...like a solar system at your command?

You get to name the solar system/galaxy/universe. :p

(Still very excited for this game, but couldn't pass up the opportunity to say that...)

It really really sucks pc version is delayed, that means pc players will have no chance at making it to the center before someone else :(.

Why only push back the PC version like 4 days? Doesn't really seem like enough time to do anything significant.

I wouldn't worry about that- the universe is huge and everyone is starting randomly on the rim... It's not likely to be 'solved' in four days. Look at how long it took people to get to the center of the Milky Way in Elite: Dangerous, and that's a much smaller galaxy.

Four days is HUGE for competitive players.

It's like an mmo, you HIGHLY underestimate the drive some people have. Four days in terms of what a player can do is huge, there are literally some people that can rush to the high end of an mmo in this time because they'll play 16+ hours a day. The competitive pc players will have 0 chance to catch up.

With it being such a huge secret of the game it seems rather obtuse to release one version later then the others, and for no apparent reason, I mean it's not like the pc version is going to change in 4 days.

Grats on making a mountain out of a molehill.

Granted, I'm one of the "why the 4 day delay, makes no sense" party.

But there's absolutely zero competitiveness in this game. At least with other players. No idea why anybody would be upset.

This should probably be in general gaming. Most likely No Man's Sky will be a console title. There were specific mentions of "next gen" at the show.

Either way, the game looks potentially amazing. I want to keep any eye on it but I don't really want to get hyped up. This is a huge game for just four people to take on.
Guess you were wrong ... maybe you shouldn't predict gaming trends

No sense yes, but perfect sense to Sony who is a major backer of this game. It's just a small artificial delay for their publisher. Sony could have made it a PS4 Exclusive or even a timed one by several months. On a bright note you'll get a full review of the console version and have a chance to not order it if reviews are absolutely terrible. I won't be preordering it till 8/11 on PC. No price break equals no reason to preorder earlier than the day before release.

Probably nothing.

But if you're stoned, probably everything

Rofl, that reminds me of Curiosity, a game by Peter Molyneux, which was released on Android where thousands of players would chip away small parts from a HUUUUGE cube, and whoever got first to its core was promised "a life changing experience". Finally one "lucky", persistent guy got to the middle, and it turns out that "a life changing experience" was him being gifted the status of a ruler in Molyneux's next game - Godus.
Yes, that Godus, Steam Early Access game with "very negative" reviews. It has been in EA since forever. Talk about being fucked over :ROFLMAO:

The God who Peter Molyneux forgot

The god who Peter Molyneux forgot wants his cut of a new game bundle to go to charity instead

Whole lot of drama over this game recently with some dude getting a copy pre-release and reportedly reaching the center (of the galaxy?).

I was on the fence before, but I'm almost positive this game is going to be a huge disappointment. The Dev was begging people not to watch the leaked videos supposedly so it wouldn't spoil it. I'm guessing it was so people wouldn't realize how shitty the game is. They are banking on people preordering and buying on release to make their money. They don't want people knowing the game sucks before they can take the money and run.

Compared to all the crap they try to sell on steam this is at least an attempt to be a real game. Not some 1980's based side scroller or top down kiddie adventure game.

I already can see more fun than my copy of Star Wars : Battlefront just from the shitty quality video that was posted.

People are just stupid. All the people crying over this really need to re-examine their lives. It's a fucking game. Wait for real reviews if you're worried about it. I'm sure that guy played straight through in a very non-fun way to get to the center in the quickest possible way to prove some kind of point. The point of the game is to explore planets, and eventually make it to the center.

So, you know, do some exploration at a leisurely pace. It's like speedrunning through Skyrim or something. Why? Yeah you can play through the main storyline in a few hours, but there is a whole fucking world there to explore. I'm guessing this game is pretty similar. Why buy it if all you're doing is trying to blast through it as quickly as possible. There's a full galaxy to explore.

Provide the game works on the PC out of the box, and looks pretty much the way I'm expecting, I will pick it up.

But it is looking very similar to a veritable shit ton of other survival / crafting / Minecraft-ish titles out there.

The planet-to-space and exploration aspect is a bit unique(ish) but at the core it is not revolutionary.

I don't require "revolutionary" to enjoy a game. I do enjoy seeing revolutionary games, or even just highly evolutionary, but a requirement? No. I require a game to be fun. This game looks fun to me.

I hope it has a good number of similarities to some other survival/crafting type titles in terms of features. I have been looking for a decent single player survival/crafting/exploring game. I thought ARK was good but it sucks as a single player game (xp is slow, so many skills you need but can't get quickly unless you split it up with others with a clan via multiplayer). Every time I read more about the game including the guy who got a leaked early copy I am pretty much thinking I am going to really like this one. :) 8/12 can't get here fast enough. They artificially delayed the PC version so they won't get my money till the 11th.

Yeah, I'm still looking forward to this a lot. I have to admit, I was a little disappointed by just how much they limited the MP possibilities, but not in any way that would make me not want this. I wasn't expecting a full MMO, I was just hoping that if some friends and I were industrious enough, we might be able to eventually find each other, and play together in a clandestine sort of way. :D Since I mostly play SP games though, that doesn't really matter much. From what I've seen of this game in general though, it looks like exactly my sort of thing.

Pretty sure it is completely unique. Isn't that why this game was so hyped?

I mean, tell me about a game you fly a ship in a universe, spot a planet, land in said planet (flying through the atmosphere and all) loot said planet, then fly off to the next one. With the addition of killing shit on the planet surface and space. All in first person.

I'm legit curious, have you ever played a game that let you do that?

On a different topic; people are completely losing their shit about these early release spoilers.

All I need to know is: 1. Does it crash? 2. Is there screen tearing? <<RAGE<< The rest I will find out for myself.

I'm not sure if there's any commercial releases that have the planet-to-space thing but I have seen it before in tech demos - I guess I was saying more that the concept isn't that unique. The execution, however, may be for the time being.

Exploration of course is not unique, although the random generation of planets and animals seems cool (I think Spore did something similar, just not first-person).

I may end up picking this up at some point depending on reviews, just not at $60.

FWIW, I've read in several places that the PS4 and PC servers are separate. Aside from that, Steam still says August 9 as of this posting.

I caught some of that leaked video earlier and from the instant it started I was like "Wow, this looks like something I played on the Commodore 64 in 1983 (and probably did)..." - anyone else get that feeling? :)

How can you "play" a game that's supposedly infinite in scope in 30 hours?

Thing about this game is, people get all wrapped up in the number of planets like it's going to be this infinite exploration thing that they play for 1000 hours. This is possible, but it will probably only apply to a certain type of player. You have to remember that despite an "infinite" number of planets, there are a finite number of atmospheres, terrain, humanoids, animals, etc. I am going to GUESS that once you've explored a few handful of planets you will have more or less "seen it all" -- it will just be randomized in different ways on different planets, but more or less the same things in different order.

That being said, the game still sounds awesome and I am most certainly purchasing it. If it affords me a minimum of my dollars spent in playing time in hours I will be more than satisfied. I also think the game is going to be a formula that will be used by more game developers in the future to continue this kind of mass exploration trend. It will be even cooler to see what the next generation of this type of game will bring.

Okay, so I have not read the spoilers, but my guess is that once you reach the center of the universe, you become a god and can start creating new planets and life.

Still think this game would go from a 7.0 to a 9.5 with the inclusion of (actual) multiplayer. Minecraft is fun for a few hours, however if you have a server with friends, its fun for months.

I used to run a personal Minecraft survival server out of my garage. My work friends and I were the only ones who were on, and even then, the chances of anyone being online at the same time was slim. Essentially, you rarely were playing with others at the same time. However, because our world was filled with REAL people, with REAL goals, there was an amazing feeling of reality to the world. One of my friends loved building large appartment buildings, and logging in and watching his progress over time was awesome, as every few days another building would begin construction, this one larger than the last. I built a pirate ship, and hearing my work friends talk about the ship durring the day was an awesome feeling. I built a bridge over a large body of water and watched as new buildings and creations would pop up on the other side because of the newfound acess.

So people who are trying to take tge high-ground by saying "not every game needs multiplayer!" Need to understand what 'multiplayer' means for a survival crafting game like this. It only makes things better.

Minecraft was the same way. If you wanted to go and get the dragon in the netherworld it was about 20 hours worth of work or less. But let's face it. That was just for a specific type of person. The real fun was in the exploration

It makes things better FOR YOU. YOU want multiplayer and YOUR OPINION is that it would improve the game. That's fine, but stop pretending that YOUR OPINION is a matter of fact. Personally, I can't stand games like Minecraft in multiplayer. I have more fun figuring out what I want to build and how I want to step it up on my own, without someone yakking my ear off or some asshat running around ruining what I'm working on. The only survival game I enjoy, Subnautica, is entirely single player.

But that is the thing, Its great for YOU because multiplayer is ultimately a feature that can be turned off, and I don't know if you read my post? I'm not talking about MMO style public servers. I'm talking about a persistent server with 5-10 friends. As I said before, I rarely saw other players online, but the fact that we could all share our world and see each-other's influence was great. At the same time, if I wanted to play single player, I could just play offline.

Win Win: it works for both of us. You want offline/single player? No problem. There you go. I want online multiplayer with a handful of good friends? I can do that too. We both win.

No-Man's Sky doesn't offer you or I that choice. and personally, I think MORE people are going to be the people like myself that wish they could share their experience exploring this huge universe with a group of good friends.

The whole "Game X takes Y hours to complete" never had any relation to how long it took me to play it because the unspoken part of that formula is "Game Reviewer Z took Y hours to complete Game X" and I do not play games the way a game reviewer does.
