Getting Caught Using A VPN In The UAE Will Cost You Over $500,000

I know that a $545,000 fine for using a VPN sounds bad at first but when you consider that, in United Arab Emirates, you can still get stoned to death for adultery. All of the sudden $500k doesn't seem so harsh.

Last week, UAE President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan issued a new set of federal laws which include one forbidding UAE citizens from using VPNs to mask their digital footprints. As reported by International Business Times, anyone caught using a VPN or proxy server could end up cooling their heels in jail and will face a fine of between $136,000 - $545,000.

But that's why you're using a VPN/proxy; to not get caught. If you're not blinded by money, the UAE is likely not a place to visit.

500k in the UAE is 5k American. i complain about the States but we will only get draconian policies like that if the joke meme trump is elected.

Steve,

You said it "will" cost you over $500,000 but then go on to say it may be as low as $136,000.

Which is correct?

I guess you have to use wifi to set up a VPN on your most hated neighbor's unsecured network. Win if you don't get caught, win if you do!

My business partner is there (jumps between Saudi, Abu Dhabi, and Dubai) and he used to be forced to use a VPN. I'll be sure and give him a heads up on this. They're a lot like China in that they randomly change the country firewall policies, so one moment your Dropbox works and the next you're blocked out. Trying to conduct any business behind their firewall all but requires alternative methods.

A lot of US corporations operate offices out of Dubai/Abu Dhabi. I can't imagine many would not have a VPN for network shares and email. That's pretty standard practice.

in the uae if you look at porn you can lose everything. They have suizares that police moral and decency laws. If you break them they kill you. They also use an eye for eye legal system, so if you steal from someone they take the hand that allowed it to happen if you can not both return it intact to the owner and pay a fine equal to the lose created by losing it. I try to avoid most Muslim counties for that reason because you can say the wrong thing or do something innocent and get tied to a post and whipped. Those punishments are done publicly. They also have very little crime because the smallest thing can get you killed if you can not pay the fines. I remember watching a guy who was high run through on of the cities pulling veils off women. I remember some one backing a car into him, the police officer thanking the person with the car, they dragged him to one of the squares with the clamps in the cobbled stones and they slide metal layard loops over his elbows and knees and then drove the layard ends into the clamps. Then someone with key turned the clamps until the guy was held flat to ground, each woman came up and handed what was considered an unclean face covering and was handed a cobble stone pried up from the sqaure. Once all the women were there they slowly walked up and dropped the cobble stones on the guy until he stopped moving. Then the police officer walked up and kicked him in the ribs. When he groaned. He asked Allah if the man was guilty. He said he was not fit to judge them man. Then he said Allah will send some one than we had to wait there. There were cops standing at the exits who actually expected us to stand there until a surize showed up. Eventually one did consistent of a dozen people who robes covering everything but there eyes. The one guy asked why did you stop. One woman said he stopped twitching. He waved his hands and said well keep going. So they dropped rocks on the guy until he stopped breathing it took hours. I was late getting back to camp but suraize actually gave me a tax break coupon for being a foreigner respecting their laws for my commander. I know I misspelled surzie but that is the kind of thing they do the cloth is not to prevent jelosy but to prevent a stange male or female from breathing on or kissing their wives, daughters and mothers.

the vpn circumvent the filtiers that prevent people from seeing porn so they only parts they know what look like are the ones they have seen in person preventing people from getting upset when they look down.

No, the exchange rate for Dirham in the UAE is 1dirham = .27 USD. The amount quoted is $500k USD. The fine is up to around 2million Dirham.

maybe he means that since they are so rich, it is equivalent to $5k to an American in the US.

So... how are they going to catch you IF you use a computer that randomizes the MAC address each time you connect to a network. They will never be able to track you if you do that.

Windows 10 has that option in it. Not sure if it is a specific hardware requirement or if Windows 10 can do it on pretty much any wireless card.

So nice place to visit not to live got it!
Westerner had her drink drugged by some local guys at a hotel, brought upstairs, woke up and realized she'd been raped. Went to police and reported the issue, and they jailed her for admitting to extra-marital sex, since she didn't have multiple male Muslim witnesses to testify it was actually rape.

And remember, this is one of the more "enlightened" Muslim majority countries.

Exactly, if Trump is elected, we are bound to have Sharia Law in no time!

Yeah, that must be it. After all, right now, we are all rainbows and peace and oh, those in power now treat the constitution so very well. /s On a different note, I was not planning on going to the UAE anyways but damn, that is a scary thing to contemplate.

I think you mean Hillary.
After all, she's the one that always supports more government as the solution to everything.

My older brother has lived in Dubai for about seven years. Reading the article sounds like a bit of fear mongering. We've been having Skype conversations (from multiple locations there) since he moved and I suggested he use a VPN to get around location blocked content years ago. He's been using the VPN for about five years and even gasp runs a few bitcoin rigs from his apartment (free power). Yes, the culture is different but as someone else mentioned we aren't perfect either.

UAE President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan

Hell of a name and title....

maybe this is related to that terr*cough* group, because in other near places *cough* you'll beg them to take all your money when you get arrested for posting a comment on the interwebs. (it was a fake video and I just said it's fake but they wanted to make sure I didn't like the guys *cough* the video was supposed to be about)
