Today Is The Last Day For The Free Windows 10 Upgrade

I don't know why I am posting this "reminder" that today is the last day to get Windows 10 for free. If you are a Windows user you've been nagged to death already by Microsoft. With that said, I feel it is my civic duty to at least remind you that you have until 5:59 AM EDT and 2:59 AM PDT on July 30th to have your installations complete. Although I have Windows 10 installed on a few computers here, I'll just be glad when the nagging finally stops on the PCs here that aren't running Windows 10.

I wonder if they are just going to take the nag screen away, or if they are actually going to disable the free upgrade.

They've been making a big stink about the free upgrade ending, but they do seem to want as many people on Win10 as possible and they missed their target. My guess is that they are going to end it like they said, then bring it back (hopefully without the nagging) a bit later and say it's because people asked for it and they are responding to consumer demand.

to people saying NO NEVER clone your damn hd upgrade the clone to get the key then pop in your windows 7 hd and use that till you feel that you want to use your free key :D

You only have to reserve the upgrade today, not "complete" it. Possibly also have the download done, but that is probably it. My last machine for upgrade has failed to upgrade for the last three days, and that shouldn't effect the free offer for anyone like me.

Waiting for the new nag screen that will take you to a web site that asks for your credit card to buy the Windows 10 upgrade.

Personally, I think they should drop the nag screen, and make the upgrade free for anyone with Windows 7+.
There are lots of business systems running Windows 7 that will be retired over the next few years. It would be a shame if the used market ends up flooded with Windows 7 systems instead of being able to upgrade them to Windows 10.

The key is generated during the upgrade (toward the end). Just downloading the upgrade will not give you a key.

Maybe, but since a long while the Windows 8 and 7 keys are valid Win10 installation keys. So I think that might be irrelevant. Besides. the reservation says I will get an installation ready message July 29th or later. That promted me to try and bypass the deadline and start it manually but that fails every time. So now I just wait for the message which has not come yet.

I tried, I really tried to upgrade all the machines in my house, but my son's machine threw a "We couldn't update the system reserved partition" message when I tried. So I did some research online as to how to remedy that situation and...yeah, PC equivalent of a colonoscopy prep. No thanks. And since I don't much feel like supporting a mixed OS environment at home (6 PCs, two laptops), I elected to just stop at that point. I may revert my two old HTPC boxes that did successfully upgrade back to Windows 7 in fact...

Really no reason for Microsoft not to have written a tiny utility to do everything they indicate here on how to fix it instead of you having to go through that mess yourself - if anybody else is having this issue and wants to know how to get beyond it, here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3086249

Too much work for me, sorry - the way I look at it, I won something: I won the hours it was going to take to upgrade 4 PCs and two laptops back, I won the loss of the annoyance of re-installing all the video drivers and getting everybody's personalized desktops back the way they were, and I won not having my crappy 3Mb/s DSL connection trying to download a massive Windows 10 update 8 times over simultaneously in a few days...

Live from my desktop:

I upgraded a HTPC and my Clovertrail tablet to win10 from 8.1 and it went well.

My gaming rig with a 2011 install of win7 scared me so I put it off until last weekend. I got some error about the execute disable bit settings but I clicked on the upgrade icon on the start bar instead and it started installing. To my surprise the install only took about 40minites and as far as I can tell even the most obscure small programs I have gathered over the past almost 5 years work fine. Even the sound drivers for my card that stopped getting driver support after vista seem to work.

Is there a way I can do this with my Win 7 key if I don't have an extra PC/drive to install it to? I can't make a temporary partition on my existing HDDs as it would require a reformat. Essentially I just want to turn my Win 7 Pro to a Win 10 Pro key. Both my desktop and laptop are already on 10. Just have a spare 7 key left but may put it to use on a future build, and may as well have another 10 Pro copy.

I installed it on all my Win7/8 machines, just to get the license allowed. Then on most of them, I promptly uninstalled/downgraded back. That way, should I ever want to upgrade, I still can, because the license is now an approved W10 license.

Today they are dismissive about receiving Win10 for free.
Tomorrow they'll complain about having to pay for it.

So what you don't like it. It's free download and keep it on USB. It will be useful after your misplaced pride wears off.

Love this myth. Except nobody that's held out from the trojan nagware for a year is going to be complaining tomorrow in the event MS tries to start charging. Laughing? Sure. Complaining - no.

As for it being "free", we'll see just how free it is in the coming year as MS continues tightening the noose on their new captive audience with force fed marketing/advertising and cloud-crap services.

Microsoft has already removed the ability to disable some group policies in W10 Pro with the Anniversary Update. Even changing registry entries will have no effect.

Microsoft removes policies from Windows 10 Pro - gHacks Tech News

Policies affected:
  • Turn off Microsoft consumer experiences
  • Do not show Windows Tips
  • Do not display the lock screen
  • Disable all apps from Windows Store
Basically all the policies you could use to disable the W10 adware are no longer effective in W10 Pro.

Yeah, because your USB will connect to your bank account and setup an ACH.

As if the end of the free upgrade period will end the nagging. I don't think Microsoft is interested in that at all. It's in their interest to continue to poke and prod people until they relent and install Windows 10. My thinking is they're going to continue to break things for older versions on their end, such as making authentication take longer or updates to download and authenticate more slowly, just to make it frustrating to run Windows 7 and "encourage" further adoption.

Its not the "FREE" that people have issues with. It's the forcing of the "FREE" that people don't like.

I will be waiting for all those virus-ridden Windows 7 laptops that will inevitably arrive for repeat re-installs. Microsoft's willful neglect of W7 and the obstinacy of people refusing to upgrade will ensure that business goes smoothly for me.

What is all the fuss about. We all love free OSs.

Windows may be going back to their charging model Alright w10 isn't really a free os, its just been part of the MS Bogo sale.

Anyway the point I'm making... is for all you hard done by kids stuck using a 7 year old OS to avoid spyware and MS malware. Don't put up with it... stop tapping your webcams.

Linux is still free guys... not just a Bogo sale either. Its free free. Every upgrade is free... and the OS is 100% free of spyware and malware (ok 95% of the distros at least) lol

Free upgrades at any time... and heck you can have a ISO downloaded put on a USB key wipe your 25 year old NTFS parts for a nice shiny new ext4 part and be up and running in about 20% of the time it would take you to download all the W10 malware for installation.

All you guys preaching about Linux sound like Jehovah's Witnesses. Should we call you Linussesses' Witnesses?

Sounds good to me really... I have seen the light. Can I interest you in a copy of the Watc... er Journal. lol

Really though software companies need to go back to selling software instead of subs... while we are at it the platform should be free and open, make your money selling me useful software. Anyway preaching mode disengage. :)

Desktop Linux also happens to be free of a lot of other software as well. I did a clean install of Windows 10 on my sig rig in 15 minutes with all of the updates. And about another 15 minutes to install video drivers, Logitech drivers for mice and keyboard, Corsair Link stuff and driver for all of the motherboard gadgets. Installing the games I have on this thing took considerably longer, but I guess I could have time there with Linux because well, most of these games, especially the bigger ones aren't there.

For a lot of people moving from Windows to Linux just trades one set of problems for a potentially much larger set of them. Until the application support for Linux improves dramatically on the desktop, it's a non-starter. And the last two decades just reinforces the point. There's nothing wrong with desktop Linux per se, but the things you're highlighting aren't really what makes it right in a world that's selling 2 billion smartphones a year. There' no way that would have happened with the average person were as 1/10th as concerned about all the "spyware" on 10 as some seem to be.

The market on the consumer end is much different from two decades ago. Selling software, at least things that cost more than $1, that's just not where the market is these days when it comes to the common personal computing device today, smartphones.

If you upgrade to windows 10 do you get to use office products? At least Word and Excel? I am not sure if i should take the plunge....

Can I play BF4 on that? How about Skyrim? Next!

I do have dual boot Linux/Win8.1 but I could never go Linux exclusively even if I would like to. Too much money invested in my game library to do that.

Buy an Xbone isn't that what MS really whats you to do anyway. ;)

I hear ya games from the previous console generation of games aren't all that linux friendly. I agree... MS has done (or where doing) a great job messing things up with DX. Its all our fault for allowing developers to get bought by MS years ago when OpenGL was still the far superior API.

I know Vulkan... we can hope things will change but we all know it's still a hail mary at this point. Lets be honest MS is willing to buy developers off... although it is nice to see there efforts seem to be failing more with DX12.

I still have a windows drive myself... I try and resist logging in to play a handful of stupid games. The reasons to switch over for that are fewer all the time. I might not have the newest of the new junky console port... but I still haven't really played out xcom2 or heck even the borderlands games.
