Nintendo NX will crush XB1 and mame PS4

maybe if they back out of consoles all together they'll team up with a phone maker and we will see the fabled nintephone become a reality. I could do with one of these:

From my point of view, I'm not sure what the NX can do to compel me. If it's only as powerful as the PS4 or Xbox One, we're back in the same boat as the Wii U. We have a console with horsepower that's about to be surpassed almost immediately by Neo and Scorpio. At best it gets multi-platform games, but do I really need another system for that?
We know that Zelda is only current-gen, so it's not like I need to buy one for that. Nintendo never launches Mario Kart and Smash with a new system, so those are at least a few years out. That's assuming those are even in the works.
VR's not happening. 4K is only possible at <30fps. I don't need another proprietary handheld or tablet. People already have Netflix on 50 other devices.

I think the only thing that might honestly make me interested is for them to actually go back to the Wii, but make it super-powerful. The Wii controller truly was a modern marvel, but the system was so underpowered that it never reached its potential. The Wii-U never embraced it because it was a "legacy" controller. I say bring it back and put it on something on par with the Neo. Make it close enough so it can actually receive ports without an overhaul. Focus on the market's obsession with shooters. The Wii-mote's aiming speed is only matched by mice. Talk about how much quicker and more precise it is on the games you already love. Focus on grandma being able to bowl or play tennis again. Remind generation X that their kids need to be raised on Mario. Inform devs that not everything needs to be a spaz-fest or use motion controls - just let the Wii-mote work like a right analog. Include a normal controller add-on for that audience, too.

The aiming in splatoon was more or less the same as the Wii Mote but with the Screen pad controller, and it was amazing. I just can't stand the Wii U as a whole. Just slow ass slow, with no options to speed up the hard drive.

I think that Nintendo is basically going to launch an upgraded WiiU with a much better smartphone-like look and feel controller.
I think that is it, there is not going to be an earth-shattering kaboom.
They are then going to concentrate on delivering GAMES and if they do that they can be a very successful company.

There is hope for Nintendo and their game will never be to go head to head with anyone. I think if they make a system that can really push some pixels and they start churning out great original content they will be fine.

I am hoping they go that route as well. It's feasible with the relatively low cost of flash and flash ROM these days.

The only issue would be if developers want high-end 4K cutscenes to go with their games. Then it will be an N64 vs PlayStation fight all over again. Still 32gb is more than enough space for virtually any title currently imaginable. The speed of cartridges would be a huge asset for developers wanting to make open world games and desiring a storage medium that is quick on the fly.

Heck, to lower development costs it could just be a custom eSATA port. Then they wouldn't even have to make a custom controller. The cartridges then could literally just operate like disc drives.

Yeah, I'll bet they're trying to "innovate" again, like the Wii with motion controls and the Wii U with the second screen. There were rumors that VR was a possibility - Nintendo didn't confirm it, just said they would go VR when VR was mainstream (read: cheap).

For the most part, I like what Nintendo comes up with. I like new ideas. There just haven't been that many new ideas since haptic feedback that have actually enhanced long-term play IMO. Motion controls are fun for a while until you realize they're not precise and it sucks to flail around for hours on end, and Nintendo (I think) even just said that the second screen was a distraction to gameplay. I hope whatever they come up with can augment current play styles rather than replace them like they're trying to do.

Maybe if they could magically turn my TV into a giant stereoscopic 3Ds screen it would be cool :)

With the intense and incredible success of Pokemon Go I am wondering if there will be a NX tie in. If so NX adoption could be much larger than anyone expects.

Imagine....if the Nintendo NX allows some avenue to enhance PGO gameplay...the implications are mind boggling.....

I hope that Nintendo isn't too "Innovative" since that usually means "marred by bad controls"

Like, the Wii had some of the best games, ever, but I had such a difficult time with its motion controls that I practically skipped the entire generation, until Dolphin let me play the games with a normal controller.

Wii U has, for the most part, not been too "innovative" and I've actually liked having the controller as a semi-portable console (it lets me play games in the next room, provided the console is right on the wall)
Though games which force you to use one or the other (or the accelerometer in the controller) are kind of a pain.

Yeah, could you imagine a 'full Pokemon' game (trading, battling, etc) combined with Go's GPS AR gameplay? It would be huge. The mobile version would act as a trojan hose for the premium NX version.

Perhaps that is what the secret controller is on the NX a limited use gaming "phone" that you can take with you to play GO and integrate with the console version.
Could Nintendo be that brilliant?

I remember a year or so ago, there were rumours going around that Nintendo was developing a system using an Android-based OS. Nintendo was quick to poopoo those rumors, but their own dedicated hardware platform (perhaps with premium editions of their mobile software, NX console connectivity, etc) combined with a software platform that includes other consumer mobile devices would be huge.

Yeah, I have seen news sites speculating that "now is the time for a Nintendo phone"

Remember the N-Gage? I think a full blown cell phone push would be a huge mistake for them. A 4G-WiFi controller would be a great idea. Hell the Vita had a 3G version.

The longer they delay talking bout it, the more I think I'm probably not going to like it.

Yeah, while the smartphone marketplace looks quite a bit different when the N-Gage was released (not sure if Android or even 'app stores' were much of a thing then), going full blown cellphone probably wouldn't be a great idea. Too many variables, and I think the price of it would put the smartphone out of the hands of their main audience (youths). I think they'd more likely build something 4G/Wifi-enabled inhouse and have an outside company build a smartphone based on it (like what they did with Panasonic and their 'Q').

Yeah, the vague/non information has me worried Nintendo isn't even entirely sure what they want to release.

I would love to see all carriers allow a nintendo nx handheld to use your data. Maybe it would have better battery life too. :)

Nintendo has proven their IP prowess in a huge way. I hope that this thread of mine proves correct and they become a great alternative to the PS4/XB1.
I am not a huge Nintendo fanboi, I just think the industry needs a third competitor

I was musing on this topic the other day and thought, MAN, Nintendo could make a great Pokemon MMO, tie it into Pokemon Go and have the world paving a gilded road to their bank vaults.
Imagine a huge pokemon MMO with raiding and stuff. Hoo boy, that would be well, it will not happen will it?

I think the main reason Pokemon GO is doing so well is because it works on devices people already own and carry everywhere. It doesn't need anything new and it doesn't even need a newer phone.
When you start intermingling proprietary hardware, I don't think it will have the same effect.

If they use the Pascal based Tegra (similar to the ones they're showing in the automotive space at ~4TFlops per IC) this thing should be fairly powerful, especially for a dockable portable thing. These are all big ifs of course, but this actually makes a lot of sense from a lot of different angles.

Some more rumors from 'sources'. Pretty sure we've heard them before: portable system that can be connected to a tv using a docking station, detachable controllers, cartridges, Tegra powered - the September reveal date is news to me, though.

Nintendo’s NX is a portable console with its own display

Original source for that:
Nintendo NX is a portable console with detachable controllers

It sounds stupid to me, but I've decided that if it's popular I'll buy one because at least I'll get to play Zelda on it.

Tech-wise it's a bit interesting. The Tegra X1 is a damn powerful processor, I have a Pixel C and CPU wise it's nearly on par with an Ultrabook CPU wise and the GPU is more powerful. A next-gen Tegra with a Pascal GPU would be about twice as powerful, wouldn't it? That would put it about on par with Xbox One overall. Maybe this is what they want in Japan? Most Japanese families only have one TV.

Yar, I'm definitely looking forward to more information. It sounds like an evolution of the Wii U gamepad.

It'd be cool if the dock can be upgraded down the road to up the visuals when the system is in 'TV' mode and it'd be nice if the dock allowed HDD expansion.

I wonder if this will mark the beginnings of a beautiful relationship between Nintendo and Nvidia. It'd be cool to see the two pair up for a future console or allow NVidia's existing Shield console to run NX software.

Actually, expect instead around 60-70% more power and better power consumption. This is Nintendo we are talking about.

Still yeah, that should be really close to the Xb1 power wise. Pretty darn awesome if the portable uses reduced power and 540p resolution but the dock could allow you to go full throttle. Just saying that could be a possibility.
