So after looking on reviews for online multiplayer co-op games, Borderland 2 was highly recommended. Feel like I wasted my $10 since there is literally nobody playing online. Wtf.

Best co-op experience is with friends on Borderlands 2. Really hard to find players for a pub game.

Exactly.. with the way the game is set up, you really want a friend who you can build around and split loot with (as much as that sucks, it's mostly shit anyways).. the game itself is built for this, and the epic boss battles and the fun that ensues.. see if a steam friend has it?

I've found there were a few pub games last I played a few months back, but it is an older title so you'd be best finding friends for pre-arranged games especially for you to undertake content/quests you need. Unless things have changed, joining someone else as a guest can mean not necessarily getting credit for certain quests if you're on a different step/not on the quest they are - but you do of course get all the loot, XP etc. It really is an excellent multiplayer experience - and isn't a bad single player one either - but if you want help finding others to play with, there are multiple options. First is the official Steam forums for BL2 - it even has a Looking to Play subsection and players post in General all the time as well. Official Steam groups are also worthwhile such as - Steam Community :: Group :: Borderlands 2 : COOP OFFICIAL which have over 5000 member and are active. There's also another for /r/Borderlands (ie the Borderlands subreddit) - Steam Community :: Group :: /r/Borderlands . Googling for Steam groups are sometimes better than searching in Steam, as they really need to update their filters and whatnot. Of course, Steam friends from other games may have BL2 as well. One great thing about Borderlands titles is that besides setting your game as completely public allowing anyone to drop in as you play (or alternately, you can play single-player locked if you so choose), there's also the ability to both browse for and open your own hosted game to, Steam friends. So once you know a few of your Steam friends play, you can use those options to jump into their games or allow them to jump into yours, even if you didn't schedule a "at 6PM on Tuesday the 4 of us are going to play" session.

Next, I would advise you to ensure you have all the content DLC (cosmetic packs are of course your choice). The Game of the Year Edition gives some of the DLC, but unless if was updated, it may nor give all of it (ie the Ultimate Vault Hunter Pack 2, the 5 headhunter packs, holiday stuff...if I recall? Not to mention the cosmetics of course.). Finding these at discount can be REALLY inexpensive these days, especially via resellers or during Steam sales. Having all the content DLC means you'll be able to host and join anyone who wants to play anywhere, all classes etc and be open to a wider group of players' interests. Of course, this will not be much of an issue to start out - the GOTY will be all you need (plus the two post-release character classes, Mechromancer and Psycho Bandit )) to get through the base campaign and when completed move onto each expansion , but as you progress its good to pick up the additional content.

Oh, since you're a newcomer don't forget about SHIFT Codes! These are free, official codes given out by 2K that grant in-game benefits like Golden Keys which can open the Golden Chest in Sanctuary and spawn Epic weaponry (level scaled, so don't use TOO many at lower levels, so you'll have some to save for high). They also give rare/promo skins and whatnot. Here's an index Borderlands 2: Golden Key - Orcz.com, The Video Games Wiki - that is updated frequently when the codes become inactivated, but feel free to use any and all that are still active.

I still think Borderlands 2 is worthwhile to play through for the story, but if you have real difficulty finding others to play with, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is a newer title with perhaps a higher player base. On Steam its still expensive, but you can find it cheaply on other sites now. Its even available for a $15 Humble Bundle right now, a fantastic deal if you think you'll want to play in the future, and you get other games to boot ! Humble 2K Bundle 2 (pay what you want and help charity) . All you'd need here is the Season Pass which can be found off site for ultra cheap. Just something to keep in mind, but you'll probably enjoy TPS equal or more (if you care about story) playing BL2 first of all, as TPS is set after the first Borderlands but before Borderlands 2 (hence the name!). It also has SHIFT codes!

Edit: Feel free to PM me if you'd like and we can add each other on Steam. I'd like to get back into playing Borderlands 2. If anyone else is up for it, feel free to post or PM and we might be able to get a game going

Is the game doable in SP? For whatever reason I stopped playing two times. Typically I finish a game even if I hate it. I did BL1 offline and enjoyed it. Started 2 offline, but I don't like my class I suppose. Wish I could switch characters. I'd expect online to be near dead as its an older title.

yes game is playable solo just not as much fun

The games themselves are totally playable solo, but as a once through for the story progression. the dlc also adds to this, but hey.. friends, or even pubbing works for this and the replay value.

You can change class. They have these things you can collect and you can change your class and redistribute your skill points etc.

I liked all 3 borderlands games. Once you beat it you can sort of keep going by continuing to level up as you go back thru the story. The bad guys continue to get harder to kill likewise.

I only played the SP as well. And right now I only own BL1.

I've not finished it in SP, but I did play in SP quite some time and didn't have any trouble. If you (like I) played BL1 offline, I expect you can do BL2 offline without any issue. You can easily swap to online with the same character to see how you enjoy it in a group, but if you really don't like it I'd suggest starting a new character before you go any further. Isolate what you don't like about your current character and then research which you may prefer instead. Thanks to the Diablo-ish nature of the game and people leveling multiple characters, the game isn't quite as dead as others may be though the userbase has diminished a bit, of course.

Note - there IS actually way to change your character class by editing your save with Gibbed's Borderlands 2 Editor. Backup your save, make a copy of that save and then you can load it into the editor and simply change your character class! Gibbed is a well known modder (he created save editors for Bioware titles like Mass Effect and DragonAge along with a host of others) so this is a legit utility. Rick’s Game Stuff . This is not any sort of online cheat or anything so there's no harm using the editor in this way, from what I've read

Edit: I think DrLobotomy is talking about the in-game "class name" change items. These are a category of equipment that can give you bonuses to various class-specific skills and can change you in-game class name from say.. Soldier to Leader etc. However, it will not allow you to go from a Soldier (Axton) type character to Gunzerker (Salvador) type character - that can only be done with the save editor I linked above. However, these "Class Mods" are an important part of gameplay and you can respec your talent points to focus on different abilities and skills too.
