This post is a rant.

So.

I watched the 1080 announcement live. I was excited to hear about the newest gen having some optimizations for VR and was looking forward to throwing down some money for a 1080 once it became available with a quieter fancy after-market stock cooler... which was promised to be available soon after the press release.

They still aren't available. At least, not really. 1070? Sure. It's somewhat available, but that feels awfully bait and switchy.

Been trying to get either the Gigabyte Geforce 1080 Xtreme or Asus Geforce 1080 OC Strix since I heard about them. I've been checking two or three times most days to buy either one. I'm currently on a pre-order list with CDW (of all places) for the Asus that went live maybe a week ago.

Today, I was thrilled to see the Asus on sale on Newegg for a cheaper price point. I immediately added it to my cart and tried to buy it, only to find out that an item had been removed from my cart due to availability (guess which item!).

At this point, I really wish I could collectively punch NVIDIA in the face. I'm really really sick of paper launches. My build was massively delayed and numerous compromises have been made in order to make a computer close to capable of what I wanted. Companies promising to have widespread availability only to see that not be the case over a month and a half later is immensely frustrating.

I really wish these companies would stop with these BS marketing maneuvers and just hold off to sell the product until they can actually, yah know... SELL THE FRIGGIN PRODUCT.

So, for any of my fellow nerds out there who work for NVIDIA or know someone who works at NVIDIA, please feel free to at least give them shit for me. It would be appreciated.

I feel for you bro! Its all good though can't do anything. If you want one though founders edition is almost always available at best buy or nvidia's site. I can't say more it just seems that they have cornered everyone to founders edition first and foremost as those are the easiest to get and more money in nvidia's pocket. Sad but true. When Vega comes out watch founders edition drop to 699 and you finally have a card available at MSRP lol.

I watched the 1080 announcement live.

I tried. My wife and I were eating dinner at TRACE downstairs at the W anyway so decided to try to find it. Asked about it but got nothing, as expected, so went upstairs and ran around the meeting rooms a bit but found nothing there as well. Must have hidden it pretty well! Saw a cool green viper with RWHPFTW on the back of it outside the door though...

Here's something I found out when I got my MSI Sea Hawk - on the egg "Auto-notify" basically puts you on the list for the next batch, and it'll ship to you when it comes in. When the card you want just pops out of existence on the list that means the next shipment is all spoken for. Which is why cards appear and disappear on there. So if you see the card you want as auto-notify go ahead and do it. I had never tried that, but did it and had my card 4 days later.

I, like you, was in the same boat. I was on vacation in California on 1080's launch night and didn't manage to get one. I managed to get the 1080 STRIX today, after a lucky NowInStock alert and it still being listed on Newegg for more than 5 minutes - since I was underground in the subway and rushed it into my cart (all on my cell phone w/PayPal one touch checkout) when I got service above ground again.

The marketing worked. You posted a half page rant on one of the most popular computer forums on the internet. Basically saying how bad you want a product that is great for vr. They must know what they are doing lol

Just checked amazon had 4 strix available

if you REALLY care about getting a 1080 you go to nowinstock, you set up a custom notification system on the cards you're looking for, sign up to be notified via text message, and you'll most likely have a card in 2-3 days.

Someone on my block has an nVidia sticker on their rear plate. I will punch his face for you the next time I see him, assuming it's a he and not she. If it's a she I'll probably hit (on) her instead.

I'm not that sure there's a lot of difference between the various incarnations of the 1080. Even base clock models like the FE seem to all overclock well, for as well as the 1080 overclocks. I've got my boost up to 1904 and often hit well past 2000 in games. Temps are the best at 80c but I'm not running an aggressive fan profile. I'm thinking that's one of the reasons behind the Founder's Edition. Well, not so much a reason, just that they seem to overclock well past stock.

In any case I've not seen too much out of AIB cards that are making whish I had something besides these FEs. Sure I wouldn't mind the stock overclocks and some better cooling but these things are pretty quiet and solid thus far, with the exception of quirkiness in the last drivers with SLI and Surround, but that's drivers.

That's kind of why GTX 1080 MSRP is MIA and "base" models that were originally meant to be $610-620 are now $650-670.

Don't feel bad. Newegg only adds a product to their Canadian site when all US demand has been satisfied (and often not even then). I've given up on them for everything but the stuff I just absolutely can't find anywhere else.

oddly, after trying (unsuccessfully) like three times tonight, Newegg finally let me buy one. Go figure.

The Asus Strix seems to be in low supply, but that's Asus fault. Not Nvidia.

I dont get why you US people cant do backorders and it essentially have to be in stock to order. Here you just backorder and get the card after a couple of days if not in stock. You can see the entire logistics chain, when it will arrive etc before you order.

I can for example see the EVGA FTW is out of stock, but comes in 2 days, in other words if you order now you get it friday. The Asus Strix OC is so awful in availability its something you have to order, before they order it. So unknown date.

If it makes you feel any better I'm in the EVGA Step-Up queue. Signed up 5/27 I believe. I'm betting I won't see my card til mid-end August.

I see them in stock daily pretty much. Just keep an eye no nowinstock.net, Strix and Reference are available right now. It is like this pretty much every launch. Though it has lasted slightly longer this time around, the GTX1080 is in pretty high demand.

US people are whiny self entitled bitches and allowing them to create a bunch of preorders with expected dates would result it endless calls to poor customer service people about slipped dates or "Why is retailer X getting cards first?!?"

Also they want to sell in stock cards and not create huge lines for other ones.

All people are whiny and self entitled. As for the bitch part well you shouldn't talk about yourself like that.

Thats a lot of work to do almost two months after a product is supposed to be available.

Can't tell if serious... :p It's like 90 seconds of effort, likely much less of a time investment than some people spending belly aching about not being able to find a card.

So you're blaming NVIDIA for the limited availability of non-reference cards?

Yeah, that makes sense.

When I was trying to get one a couple weeks ago it showed as in stock on Best Buy's site. Right after the order was placed I checked the status and it showed on backorder. I got mad and cancelled it. Yah mad bro.

So then I camped out on nowinstock and eventually was able to get an ASUS Turbo. I wanted a blower solution card and it was one of the better values in that regard vs. a founder's which was $49 more. I literally had to snipe it within minutes though as newegg was going out of stock on ANY 1080 card within minutes of showing as in stock. There were a lot of other nerds trying to get those cards when I was.

You have to be fast. Ebay fast. Snipe it!

Man, it's the same threads every time the latest top cards come out ... can someone just make a twiki page, or sticky thread we can link to each generation? lol

When I want to buy something I want to buy it hassle free, not with even 90 seconds of effort. If I want to buy a gallon of milk I don't want to be told to just go to a website and sign up for a waiting list.

Do you check the dates on a gallon of milk? Or do you just say, "Fuck it, I want this to be hassle free, I don't care if it expired three days ago." ???

I don't check the dates, the expiration date has a few days safe period.

It does seem like most enthusiasts who aren't n00bs ought to know that there's a strategy to buying graphics cards that involves timing your builds to occur about 120 degrees out of phase with the GPU release cycle.

If you imagine GPU lifecycles as a sine curve with a period of approximately 15 months, the trick to frustration free part shopping is to spend the four to six months between announcement and widespread availability of new graphics cards enjoying your old one.

Anyway, availability of the 10X0 is already loosening up quite a bit. I was in a Fry's yesterday, and I was able to put my hands on at least one 1080 and like eight or nine 1070s. There weren't any priced at the magical $380 everyone is expecting, but there were examples that were priced lower than the Founder's edition, and none of the 1070s were over $500. I didn't pay that close attention last generation, but I don't recall availability of the hot rod 9 series cards improving as quickly as the 10 series did. A search on newegg reveals plenty of availability at a range of prices, all the way down to a basic card priced just a little higher than that $380 nVidia promised.

Edit: Newegg has a 1080 priced at $630 in stock right now, as I type this.

FYI, to get mine, I had to check every 15m starting at 9am my time. Alt-Tab -> F5, wait, repeat. Doesn't interrupt work flow and you eventually get what you want. It took me three days and that was only because I was stubborn and wanted a specific one. However, I know there were people more dedicated or lucky than me that got dozens before I did. We're dealing with supply and demand and yes, supply is low but the cards are there for the most dedicated!

Man you're lucky you didn't try and get in on the 290x days where they were all getting bought out by the bitcoin miners and driving prices up to double retail.

Don't forget to punch your card before installing it. You know, just to let it know who's boss. You can kiss it after if you want.

Well, that's already the relationship I have with my wife...

Abuse + Affection is the foundation of every long lasting relationship.

Obviously kidding... my wife is the one who beats me

I set a notification on Newegg for the Strix OC a week or two ago...haven't seen shit. So either they are perpetually out of stock, or Newegg sucks. Or both.

I actually don't even see the card listed on Newegg's site anymore...

I have to agree with OP somewhat. The announcement was awesome, the price looked awesome, and I was all ready to buy. We haven't even seen any MSRP cards for the non-FE and availability has been slim to none.

I think complaining worked - the Gigabyte 1080 GTX Xtreme Gaming with the VR package just came back into stock on Newegg and I was able to order one.
