BATTLEFIELD 1

Ya I find I'm having fun with each class. Something I don't usually do. I tend to normally stick with 1 or 2 classes in BF games.

The planes are wicked. A little nerfed but fun as hell.

As for the rest, it takes a while to get the hang of it but all the vehicles and vehicle positions are fun. With the medic class you get that classic rifle action, not bolt action, but they do lots of damage.

The classes are more like the classes in 1942, I think. I am old.

Yeah if you liked 1942 you aren't gonna wanna miss this one for sure! The alpha is awesome. Like play for hours at a time awesome.

I played 1942 for a long time after launch and then migrated to Desert Combat. If they can recapture that fun I may bite once the price goes down a little. Seems like every year they are pumping out a new game killing the old. I don't want to buy into that cycle. 1942 was great and lasted several years. I have not liked any since Desert Combat really.

I have played every PC Battlefield game except for the last one. As long as this doesn't feel like another BF4 mod, like Hardline, I think I am going to finally upgrade my PC to play it.

Hardline was garbage. This game is fun. Pretty much sums it up.

Frankie's video is good...how many players were in that game? Seemed like a lot less than some of the 32x32 matches they were showing at EA. I think with too many people it would become too much of a clusterfuck and less of an experience like we see in the video.

I do like the return to no-auto-kill weapons and bi-planes and stuff. Might pick this up eventually but I don't see myself buying it on launch for full price.

This is great also. Real Life Mode ion 4K:

Gameplay here feels worlds better than that shown during the live matches of the EA livestream. More methodical, less twitchy. Trying to put my finger on what else is different.

I know in BF3 and BF4, gameplay "felt" the best with between 40 and 48 players. More breathing room than a full 64-player clusterbang.

From what I see, the focus is now back on Conquest. BF3 and BF4 was centered around CQ maps like Operation Metro which catered to COD fans and stat whores.
BF1 now seems more focused on the experience of being in the open fields of the WW1 era. From what I see, CQ is going to be kept to am absolute minimum unless there's a trench warfare map.

From what i've seen of the streams on twitch this is like bad company 2 with snipers all over the place =/

This is my experience in game also. Lots of SMG sniping from rooftops.

I am not feeling the game at all. I maybe have 5 hours in it since I have zero desire to play a second match when I try it every day.

Smg sniping? I've played a ton of this and have never gotten sniped from an smg. I've gotten sniped from the sniper rifles but never from an smg. I really don't know where your getting that from. It's not possible to die in 1 hit from any gun in the game except from a sniper rifle in my experience.

Frankie's video of the gameplay just about has me sold. I was starting to lean towards maybe skipping it as it looked too fast paced... But I think this changed my mind.

Just a quick preview of the vid and I got a nostalgic twinge from teh BF42 Stalingrad map. That was some fun stuff and this does look entertaining.

I will admit I am surprised. I played BF3 and BF4 but only to follow the player base. BF42, PoE (damn I miss the mod days...) and BF2 and BFBC2 were far superios IMHO to 3 & 4 that followed. This BF1 seems to capture some of the greatness of the games before.

Now, who wants to beach a damn battleship for a proper shore assault?!?!?

I am getting that from my alpha experience. Maybe someone found a glitch then. I was being one shot by MP18s last night from people standing on rooftops.

I'm digging that they took away the audio based auto spotting from BF4. No longer do you fire and show up on someone's minimap. I have a feeling that whole mechanic was meant to give people a reason to use suppressors in BF4 since they had many drawbacks. In WWI, the suppressor had only recently been introduced by Hiram Maxim (of Maxim machine gun fame), and weren't widely used except on some bolt action rifles.

Here's one of the few decent examples I could find:
M1903 Springfield with scope and M1910 Maxim Suppressor

It could be a glitch. However, my bet is it's one of two things happening.
1. The old netcode issue with fast firing guns. Server updates weren't fast enough for over 800-1000rpm guns, thus the rounds would seem to hit the target all at once and feel like a one shot kill to the player on the receiving end. The BF1 servers are supposedly running at 60hz, which is higher than most of the BF4 servers that no longer have this issue. This suggests is could have been temporary on the server end or temporarily on your end with your ISP, router, etc.
2. Old frostbite engine game hacks that have resulted in Day 1 cheats that have been around since Bad Company 2. Supposedly many of these were finally fixed in BF4 with patches and caught with a combo of Punkbuster and FairPlay, but who knows if these systems are even working properly in this closed alpha.

I usually play on 40hz servers in BF4.

These people were also at quite a range where even the killcam only showed a tiny red outline. I saw the same thing tonight. Multiple players going 17/1 or higher all using MP18s and other SMGs and killing with one shot. A couple of them were laying prone on rooftops.

Nope, don't like what I see. Gameplay looks more like Quake Team Arena than WWI.

Its a Battlefield title "based" on WW1. What were you expecting? Check out Verdun if you were looking for more of a simulator.

I have looked into Verdun but is infantry only and looks a bit clunky, I want to fly the WWI planes too.

It does look pretty clunky. I think BF1 will be your best option. Although if you like the idea of flying around in WW1 planes, you should play War Thunder.

I had War Thunder installed some time back but it was too arcade for my liking. Rise of Flight is the best WWI flight-sim you can currently get and I see it is now free too and you just pay for the planes.

Rise of Flight United on Steam

There is also a pay-for modded Microsoft CFS3 that is pretty good. I have the first version of the mod but not the latest version and you need a copy of CFS3 too in order to install the mod.

Just because it's battlefield doesn't mean it can't be more suited to the era its set in.

Bf1942/43/Vietnam were all fun games that played toward their setting, rather than games that seemed irreverent to their settings and playing like previous battlefield games.

Battlefield has been a series that's been known for straddling a line between the pure arcadey style like CoD and sims like Arma. It finds a middle ground between those two extremes which is why many people enjoy the series.

This (from what we've seen so far) seems like they did not want to change anything about the gameplay really to play toward its setting.

Things like gas being not a big deal (literally everyone gets a mask, you throw it on, or even if you don't you only take limited dmg if you run into it), to unscoped bolt actions not even getting their own class, but rather being a sub-variant chose on a single class that likely most people won't ever use (why would you get rid of a scope when it allows you to see/shoot further and you can still use iron sights WHILE having the scope if you want?), to the fast paced nature of the movement and mechanics.

I'm not saying the game can't/won't be fun, but a LOT of people who heard "WWI" rumors before the game was announced got excited and were hoping for more of a jump in terms of gameplay, the likes of BF1942>BF2 or BF2>BF:BC2. Instead we got a game that looks to play a lot like BF4 but with a new skin over it and little to no new mechanics.

Melee combat, they talked some about this and the "changes" and it looks virtually the same as older games, cept you now have more variety in types of melee weapons. Spades, knives, clubs, etc. However it still looks like your usual "hit melee = I win button" insta kills, and unlike bf4 no counter or anything. Which to me is a terrible design choice. Melee combat needs to be fun for both sides, not just a "who hits first wins" type of thing. Hitting someone prone or in the back? Ok that can be a takedown kill if you need it in the game. However attacking someone facing you? It shouldn't be an instant kill, you should go into melee combat and the other person should be able to block attacks, parry, etc. You could seriously make this a fun aspect, heck even the old Wayne Gretzky hockey games had more well rounded melee combat.

This even goes down to the classes.

I mean, where's the engineer/sapper? WW1 engineers played a big part in the battlefield. Setting up barbed wire, trenches, clearing these kinds of things , etc. Yet they don't even have that class in the game for some strange and perplexing reason.

They could have EASILY had an engineer class and allowed them to do things like lay barb wire, build stationary mg nests, dismantle enemy barb wire, and gave them uscoped bolt actions, it would have been a perfect and fitting class in the game.

What about artillery as a class or commander type of role? None of that in it. Artillery played the single BIGGEST part of the entire war. Up to 70% of all casualties in wwI were from artillery, both normal shells and gas.

Instead they played it safe, gave generic classes with generic abilities, they didn't seem to build the game toward the setting and make changes or tailor gameplay specifically toward that era or setting.

Melee combat is not 1 hit kill in all circumstances. It's one hit kill if you get them with a bayonet charge, which isn't guaranteed. Your player also screams as he's doing it, so you do give away your position to anyone nearby and possibly ruin your chances of a successful kill. It is a one hit kill if you attack them from the rear, just like knifing in BC2, BF3, and BF4. If you attack them from the front it only does 80% damage. This is the big difference here. Most people you are seeing in the videos who do get killed from the front had already taken damage from elsewhere. The counter knifing system they setup in BF4 is so bugged and flaky, I would rather they pull it altogether until they came up with something completely different. Unfortunately, something like the system you mentioned isn't developed overnight so we might not see something like you are explaining until next release or future patch. It would be bad ass though to have melee fights, but DICE's history would suggest it's likelier to result in a bad implementation.

There is an engineer class in the game, but it unfortunately isn't like you described. They are banking on a different class system. They do have a means of repairing vehicles. I'm going to withhold judgement on the class system until I can play it first hand. Setting up barbed wire, trenches, or even tearing them down could be a clunky mess. From what I've seen, the destruction level is so much more than even BC2 or BF4 that there is no need to setup these obstructions in the first place because every tank, every truck, and every explosion is going to take them out and put a massive crater in its place. In turn, those craters become a new set of cover.

Gas will kill you quickly in this game, and so far we've only seen gas grenades thrown by individual troopers. They could end up with some artillery system for it also. That being said, the gas grenades can be exceptionally effective. If you put on your gas mask, you can no longer aim down sights. You have to hip fire which will lead to a lot of inaccuracy. Gas grenades will also flush enemies out of buildings or cause them to seek cover. They either pop out and get shot, or you jump in there and they get a surprise.

As far as commander, I am disappointed they removed it. However, I have heard rumors they would implement artillery strikes somehow by using a flare gun or something similar. There is already a flare gun in the Alpha, but I haven't really seen how it's implemented. I will wait and see how this pans out.

Try to keep in mind, we've only seen one map, and its only the alpha. I'm unsure how many maps we will see in the beta, but I'm sure more game mechanics will be worked out by then.

-edit-
Everything I've heard so far is DICE let slip the Beta would be end of summer after GamesCom 2016. GamesCom is August 18-21. I'm guessing last week of August or early September.

Skills to pay the bills. Sorry didn't know where to look for a youtube of it.

wish they made demos like they used to.
You mean like the open beta that will be coming at the end of this month. Yeah its not quite the same thing as a demo because they are still working on the game but generally the beta is very close to what the actual release will be like.

Seems pretty easy when all your targets are highlighted for you.

Right? And the fact that a sniper can just run around in the open like that and not get picked off quickly is beyond me.

Yeah, the proximity highlighting is a ridiculous opposite of what I think they should have done.

If you they have to have 3d spotting, it should have been last location (no GPS), hold to spot (1sec or so to prevent spam macros), and no auto highlight/proximity.

Just no spotting period outside of you showing up as a small round blip (no direction facing, no movement) and only when someone actively can see you (IE not through fog or cover) and only have they hold hte "spot" button physically over you and press it for a second or more (so you can't just tap it over and over to spot enemies randomly)

Hell, WWI they didn't even have easily portable radios at all and the current spotting makes it seem like even more futuristic then BF4 was...

Oct. 18th or 21st
DICE and a few other game companies historically release on Tuesdays and they seem to like late October early November.

Therefore I'm going to say...
October 18
October 25
November 1
November 8

My money is on 1-2 weeks before COD infinite warfare.

i love it so much that I am going to pre order this thing, it loves my RX 480!

visuals and gameplay is top notch, especially sniping.

got damn 2 more months of long wait!
