Trekkies outside of the US and Canada with a Netflix account will be able to stream episodes of the new series within 24 hours of their US premiere dates. Those in the States can watch the show on CBS All Access, while Canadians can get it on Bell Media networks. In related news, a fourth Star Trek movie has been announced, with Kirk’s father (played by Chris Hemsworth) to return.

Though the series will be premiering in the US on CBS All Access, Netflix and CBS Studios International today announced a landmark international licensing agreement for the new Star Trek television series. Netflix will be the exclusive premiere home of Star Trek in 188 countries (excluding the US and Canada). Each episode of the new series will be available globally within 24 hours of its U.S. premiere. Additionally, all 727 existing episodes of the iconic Star Trek television library – including Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Enterprise will be available on Netflix around the world by the end of 2016.

I wasn't even aware there was a new Star Trek series on the way.

Edit - nevermind. Now I remember, this is the 'webisode' series. I thought it was a web-only thing. Kinda cool, I didn't get into Star Trek until a few years ago, but I found a new appreciation for the series (especially TNG).

As I understand it, the first episode is on regular TV and then the remainder will be on CBS All Access. That pretty much guarantees I won't be watching it at all. If I could access it on Netflix then I might but I'm not paying for CBS All Access just to watch that.

Stupid CBS All Access. They should just show it on Netflix for everyone. It is working well for Marvel.

I find it very promising that one of the writers for DS9 will be producing it.

This suggests that there will be continuity with the previous Star Trek universe, unlike how JJ Abrams butchered things.

I wonder when - in the time of things - it will be set. After TNG/DS9/Voyager? Between TOS and TNG? Something different all together?

I'm looking forward to this. I essentially grew up on TNG.

Why god???, why!!!!!

time travel again? a time/space nexus a la "Generations"? Both bad ideas.

I've pretty much decided to ignore all of the movies in the reboot, after what JJ Abrams did, messing with the story lines. The TNG moves were good, as they tied into the universe, and the stories did not conflict with existing knowledge of the Star Trek universe, but JJ Abrams really messed things up in the film reboots.

It's kind of curious, because he did the absolute opposite with his work with Star Wars, tying it in nicely to previously released films.

Abrams is just the director, he doesn't write the story.

I believe this is correct. I guess they're trying to use this show as leverage for All Access. I've had All Access for about a year now, I watch a number of shows on CBS and they don't do Hulu. In any case I'm enough of a Trekkie have signed up for it for this new series. Not sure how many others they'll convince. It certainly seems like a way to keep viewership down.

Fair enough. They have writers, but I imagine being the director with creative control involves some power to nix certain ideas in the script and have them rewritten, no?

I really don't know how the dynamic works.

That being said, the rest of his work on Star Trek is pretty annoying as well. Ridiculous overdone lens flares, shaky handheld cameras, etc. Very annoying. I was particularly annoyed with how his Klingons looked nothing like what they looked like in the rest of the series. (I know, there is some conflict between early TOS stuff anf TNG here too)

This is the kind of shit that drives people to piracy... Exclusives and having to sign up for a new service just to watch something...

Agreed. But I'll always watch Star Trek as long as I'm alive so for me $7 bucks a month to see my favorite show of all time isn't a big deal. I don't think there's enough people like me though to make this work.

Yes and no. Story is pretty locked in. Director can control how it is told and how it flows. It is why you will see directors cut versions, this is how they would have preferred it after the editing process. It is a very complicated process and in most cases the directors do get all the credit/buckets of crap for what the final product is.

Yea the whole lens flare thing, that's on him. Even the control panels would cause a flare. Looks like 90s web videos.

Yeah, I started watching TNG on TV as a kid in the 80's and 90's.

Kind of lost track of it all once i started high school though, but went on a major binge once everything came out on Netflix.

I watched through TNG -> DS9 -> Voyager, and all the TOS and TNG movies and once I ran out of those I also watched Enterprise.

I was never able to get into the TOS TV series. I found the acting and sets to just be too bad.

When I went back and rewatched TNG, I was stunned by how poor I found many of the early TNG episodes. The first couple of seasons were almost as bad as TOS, but the series slowly grew into its own, and by the 4th season or so, it was pretty damned magnificent until the end. DS9 was very good too. I liked Voyager, but it didn't really measure up to DS9 or TNG at its height.

Enterprise was a nice little diversion, but I didn't care for it that much.

I'm hoping this new series doesn't violate the existing Star Trek universe (ignoring the JJ Abrams films) and turns out to be a worthy new show. There hasn't been a Star Trek show in way too long.

Canadian rights sold to Bell Media........... So whereas everywhere else gets it for ~$10 a month, Canadians will have to sign up to a 2 years, $100+ a month cable subscription just to watch it.

To be fair, First Contact was based around time travel and that was by far the strongest of the TNG movies.

I loved TOS. It's fun and cheesy!

TOS certainly had it's cheesy moments, especially in the last season. Like "Spock's Brain". Then it could have cheesy effects but still be pretty interesting and serious like "The Doomsday Machine". Then it really could be on the funny lighthearted side like "The Trouble With Tribbles."

Indeed!
And of course, can't forget about Mudd's Women!

I don't get why CBS would make the series exclusive to their own streaming service, then turn around and license it to Netflix.

Doesn't that defeat the purpose?

TOS had some terrible episodes, but also some incredibly good ones. You have to ignore the sets, effects, and alien costumes, because the stories are for the most part very good. It's also very dark at times, Kirk lets Elizabeth Taylor (who he is in love with) get run over by a truck because it will save the future? That's some dark shit right there.

TOS is a nice wish fulfillment genre, if you can identify yourself as Kirk. ;)

Tons of poon (even alien variety), command of a starship with tremendous firepower, people obey your commands, your bros always have your back, and you can just kind of wing-it and play a little loose with the rules.

And really its just about Kirk, Spock, and Bones... everyone else was kind of an ancillary character to their trifecta of awesome, and they had good chemistry together.

Ugh... I think I'm still holding onto a tiny shred of hope that this series will be actual intelligent sci-fi, similar to TNG, DS9, etc. If it's supposed to be directly related to the new movies, then I expect it to end up as a forgettable low-quality TV show that has more in common with cheap one-season action shows than real sci-fi. It's still a shame that they felt a need to flush almost 40 years of unbroken continuity down the toilet simply for the sake of making it easier to milk the Star Trek name and pump out a few cheap action movies that no one will even remember 10 years from now.

The only thing they have said about the premise is that it is in no way related to the JJ Abrams films.

They've also hired one of the writers from DS9 to be the producer of the series, so I have high hopes that this one will be good!

They license it to Netflix for the rest of the world only. It won't be on Netflix in the U.S. and Canada.

IMHO, these types of exclusives are a form of Monopoly, and really ought to be banned. Everything should be released to all platforms that want to carry it, around the world all at once.

God forbid a copyright owner be allowed to choose how their product is distributed

Let's see I have Telus for my TV provider so if I want to legally watch this I need to switch providers and pay $100+ to bell and sign up for a contract to Bell? Not a chance in hell am I willing to do that. I will either pass or watch on my handy android TV box that I needed to use in order to watch Game of Thrones because we didn't have an HBO on the go in Canada either. I already pay monthly to Netflix so I would gladly watch on that if it was available.

In what world do they think it's acceptable to be forced into one particular TV provider to watch a TV series. We aren't talking Video Games where I can understand the programming necessary to port games to different systems. We are strictly talking about a licensing monopoly. If Telus starts trying to pull this crap with exclusives I will drop them in a second as well and strictly use my Android box + Netflix for everything.

/end rant

Per your arguement, then shouldn't AMC be required to license TWD to a network channel?

Ya, Game of Thrones was a huge piss off, especially given that I was actually a subscriber to Bell's OWN streaming platform at the time, but they purposefully withheld the show so you would have to sign up to their overpriced HBO package, which is only available if you are already a Bell (or I guess Rogers/Telus) subscriber.

Fuck Canadian cable companies, they will never see a penny from me.

God forbid a copyright owner be allowed to choose how their product is distributed

Do you agree with the way it is set up for distribution in Canada? Bell is the only one with rights to show it in Canada by the sounds of it.

Per your arguement, then shouldn't AMC be required to license TWD to a network channel?

I can get AMC with any TV provider by paying a little extra per month. I don't need to switch TV providers to get AMC. If Bell was the only provider allowed to show one of your favourite series like Game of Thrones (insert your own fav) and Telus was the only one with rights to show Walking dead (once again insert your fav) are you saying you wouldn't want to post a rant about the fact that you now need to either hold two full TV subscriptions to different providers plus pay the extra tier for the channels you want?

In the states they are locking this Star Trek series behind a monthly pay service that form my understanding has no other strings attached (Don't need a TV subscription with one particular TV provider). You just pay the $7 a month if you want it or you don't. I have no problem with that.

Your argument regarding TWD being on a network channel is nothing like the situation above, hopefully you see that now.

Yeah, they should be allowed to do it no matter how stupid a decision it is. If they want to ensure higher rates of "not getting paid for your work", by all means, let them I guess.

Rumor is that it will be connected to the Star Trek "Prime" universe and not the JJ Abrams movies. It would be foolish of them to do anything else given the shows' rich and long history. Having said that, not all the shows or even films were good. Wiping the slate clean wouldn't be a bad idea at this point, although the way JJ's films did it wasn't the right way to do so.

Why hate? All the recent star trek movies have had great reviews, and the newest one is 95% on rotten tomatoes.

I agree, they can do what they want. But I'll also be pirating this if it's any good, so fuck them for trying to force me into a cable package to watch on shitty CBS.

Wait? What? The TNG movies were good? First Contact was the only TNG movie worth a damn. Generations was the least bad of the rest, but that movie was just a repeated nut kicking to anyone that liked TOS and it did fuck all with the TNG cast. The other two were complete crap. If Into Darkness didn't exist Nemsis would be the worst Trek movie ever made. Insurrection is just dumb, and not in a good way. It felt like a movie length episode of the series, a first season episode at that and not one of the good ones.
