What resolution? If you need DVI-DL, then you are quickly into a 80-100$ adapter.

I have a older monitor that only has DVI-D and VGA on it.
I got a DP to DVI adaptor from a friend but it does not send any signal to the monitor from my RX480.
I think the adaptor he gave me is DVI-I output but the monitor is DVI-D.

If I buy this passive DP to DVI cable will it work?
6ft 28AWG DisplayPort to DVI Cable - White - Monoprice.com

Should I buy this active adaptor instead?
DisplayPort 1.2a to DVI Active Adapter, Black - Monoprice.com

I would get the active adapter. You can get those at a lot of places btw.

Why can't you use one of the HDMI ports instead? HDMI and DVI use the same basic signaling, so you don't really need an "Adapter" at all other than something that obviously changes the physical interface. It would be comparable to a DVI-I to VGA "adapter". You can even get cables with DVI on one end and HDMI on the other. As long as you don't need more than 1080P, 60Hz, it should work great.

The monior Im using only has DVI-D and VGA, no HDMI.

So yea HDMI to DVI or Display port to DVI will work.

As such.

All the AIBs seem to be launching with DVI, so might be just worth waiting for that.

That RX480 is going to be a beast for 1050P...You can easily use VSR to make things look even better...Enjoy the card when you are able to source an adapter!

Did you miss the part where the OP already purchased his 480? ;)

I got a free passive adaptor from a friend which is the same brand but outputs DVI-D and it works great. Thanks.

As far as I know since the pinout on the connectors haven't changed. Electrically, HDMI 2.0 is the same as 1.4.

Oh, so it's a pin-count thing. That would put some 120/144hz monitor owners in a tough spot. Now I see why the 1000 series and non-reference rx 480's have DVI.

I believe that HDMI 2.0 transmits data at a higher frequency than HDMI 1.x, not with multiple links, which would require more pins.

I know people are going to argue, but its pretty stupid cost saving removing the DVI-D. It started with the Fury line, but should have stayed on a budget piece of kit.

I agree for the Fury X. Since it is water cooled it doesn't need extra vent space.

For a budget card, its less likely to be used for hi-res gaming so maybe dual-link DVI is not a deal breaker. If the extra vent space makes the blower work better than its a win.
