RX 480 is apparently killing pcie slots

yeah on these super high end cards I don't see people using cheapo components anyways so there should be no issue.

The 7900 GX2 was going to be first dual gpu card :p then I bribed someoned at a tradeshow to sell my an 8800gtx for 60% less instead :D My PSU and motherboard and case cooling were not prepared for either :p

Posting to this thread as well for the ones who are brave enough to test this out :D

It is possible to temporary fix this problem with newest MSI Afterburner by programming the voltage regulator through I2C bus if you wan't to do it yourself. There's no BIOS flashing tool which supports Polaris atm so bios patch is not possible.

1. Open command-line and go to MSI afterburner directory.
2. (optional) Test the I2C bus with command: MSIAfterburner /ri06,08,0D (if answer is 20 or 44, the bus is communicating properly)
3. input MSIAfterburner /wi06,08,1E,BB
4. input MSIAfterburner /wi06,08,1F,B0

5. Now your card power distribution ratio has changed to favor 6-pin plug. Difference is about 10w.

TEST AT YOUR OWN RISK

Credit goes to The Stilt who figured this out.

I must admit I thought you would had needed to use something like the Elmor EVC tool (software+hardware).
Cheers

The fact that sensationalist threads like this are even allowed to fester like this is disgusting.

LOL he has to look at the spec sheet again, those specs are for a test system not for end consumer.......

Looking at the specs he totally missed what that product was for in the first place great.....

Not to mention that he is not even looking at the spec for the PCIe slot, he is looking at the spec for the connector on the card. The whole problem has to do with the PCIe slot. lol some how he deduces that there is no problem by looking at the wrong spec for a connector that is not even the problem in the first place.... :wacky:

someone should find out who he works for and tell them to keep on eye on him lol.

Oh come on, the guy legitimately took 2.8x perf/watt claim by AMD at face value and used it to estimate 90W board power on rx480. Poor soul, really.

Its one thing to correct a thread its another to post up things from reddit that are just as "offensive" as a manner you think the thread title is.

You think an electrical engineer talking about what he thinks a pcie slot can support is offensive? Are you serious?

LOL its not offensive, its totally off the mark an doesn't have anything to do with this situation lol, its called, what, pulling out of thin air to try to defend something with false information. All you and do was just read the links he pointed to see that...... But yet you linked it anyways, and the statement prior to that, really shows your view on the topic.

Dude why don't you get lost and go post in the Nvidia section.

LOL yeah nice, pass go and don't collect 200 bucks, I get your mind set........

Just try to make your Cabal of AMD diehards and you will be fine in your little bubble lol.

That doesn't even make any sense

So why did you even post that Reddit link? Because you thought it was proof that the specs were not being violated?

That the specs being violated doesn't matter?

What?

Common sense, specs are there for a reason, they have been violated, AMD needs to fix it, that is it, there should be no discussion after the fact. No amount of BS will cover that up. People can dig out unrelated specs and say look here, its ok! That is worse than saying its ok to violate the specs, bacause now you are trying to justify it by documentation, where some people will be fooled by it.

I will reiterate, the specs are there for a reason, the same specs AMD, nV and the motherboard manufactures, and the OEM's and system builders have agreed upon, they MUST BE met, end of discussion.

No amount of fervor for AMD or pulling out crap out of ones ass will change that.

You do realize this is in general video card thread and as far as I am concern, neutral section. And as for why this thread is continue to fester, if you do have issue with it, I suggest you contact Kyle or Steve to lock the thread if it is bothering you.

As for telling people to go back to nVidia thread, why are you getting so work up about it?

The fact that sensationalist threads like this are even allowed to fester like this is disgusting.

So what is your take on the 1.1A per contact (12V) for the actual specific Molex PCIe 16-lanes slot connector?
Even Allyn Malventano is dubious by how much the 480 is going over that in the more extreme scenarios, they checked the specs and his training was in electronics engineer such as Nuclear Technician and then went onto the Navy working electronics there.
Allyn Malventano | LinkedIn

This is the rating for the slot with the thickest plating and still 1.1A per 12V contact: Molex Connector Part Number - 87715-9306

I know you linked different ratings, but that does not correlate to the Molex part, which Allyn and others including myself mention is what to take the ratings from.

Thanks

Still waiting for Amd. It's seven on the coast. O h! what if the fix is not that easy? It's like a cheap slasher movie the suspense builds will 480 survive?.. Stay tuned for the next episode!!!

I believe it is 9pm EST, so about 2 more hours.

AMD cleared violated existing specs, yet daft people are still bringing up non-sequitur nonsense like how well their OCed machines run out-of-specs, engineering limits of connectors, cost and quality of other components, best perf/$ right now blah blah.

No other industry out there would let this fly.

What do they say, one is an incident, two is a coincidence three is a pattern?

Reddit sends hello to AMD's testing engineers.

Brand new RX 480 just destroyed my motherboard • /r/pcmasterrace

And yes, it's an old OEM system getting killed, just as expected, really.

This was your problem unfortunately. Most everyone will be fine upgrading to the RX 480 because most modern motherboards can handle the extra load on the PCI-e lane.

You see, it's not AMD's fault for shipping a out-of-spec card, it's YOUR fault your shitty in-spec mobo couldn't run AMD's glorious broken product.

well if they are working around the clock lets see what happens till midnight there time.

So lets give them a benefit of the doubt.....

Man that board looks like ancient. I highly doubt he even has a 500w power supply. Looks like lowest of the low end and I doubt oem put a 500w power supply in that thing. Most like 350. looks like someone wanted to blow shit up to make a point lol

old OEM computers, not everyone is going to have the latest stuff.....

Fuck this is a useless thread.

So by now, we're at 24 pages, with thousands of dead motherboards to show for it. This is as much FUD as the 'Fast as a 1070' rumours.

Stop posting here and dragging this FUD title to the top, people. Ffs.
