Are you a resident of Charlotte, Raleigh-Durham, Huntsville, Salt Lake City, San Antonio, or San Francisco? You are in luck, as Google Fiber is being prepped in your area. Google has also listed a number of other cities that may potentially get the service.

There is also a longer list of “Potential” Google Fiber cities. In these cities the initial infrastructure mapping and the required permitting and licensing are being explored. The potential city list currently includes Chicago, Illinois; Dallas, Texas; Jacksonville, Florida; Louisville, Kentucky; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Phoenix, Arizona; Portland, Oregon; Tampa, Florida; and the California cities of Irvine, San Diego, San Jose, and Los Angeles.

Well, I am on the list, but I will only believe it when I see it.

Potential good news for me. Just have to wait and see. Maybe it will make Verizon Fios drastically improve my speeds and lower costs.

I keep hopping to see Minneapolis or St. Paul on these lists. I'm planning to move up to that area in the next few years and I'd love to not be stuck with Comcast or CenturyLink

I think their "Phoenix" is a misnomer as it's coming to the Phoenix Valley but not to Phoenix itself. AFAIK they're in negotiations with Tempe (home to ASU) and Scottsdale right now for right of way and whatnot. Not to say it couldn't expand to other cities in the valley from there but the valley is an astoundingly sprawled out place.

Hope they come to Dallas. Frontier's takeover of verizon service has not been entirely 'smooth'

Kinda irritating that Cox has their "Gigablast" service here in the Las Vegas area but only in a few choice neighborhoods, I figured since I live downtown they'd be able to wire it up without issues but apparently not. Weird how that works considering this is a pretty wired town as it is but whatever. CenturyLink has their gigabit service in town now as well and again, not in the downtown area even though I live like 2 blocks from their downtown switch, it's like literally across the street in some respects.

UGH

At the rate they're going. It should take 100 more years for everyone to have google fiber.

The point of the service was never to wire up "everyone" or even "most". Google fired it up as a way to put pressure on other ISPs to increase speeds to gigabit levels and stop usage caps. And so far Cox, Comcast and Centurylink have all started offering or will soon offer gigabit speeds in a remarkably short time frame (for an industry that sat on it's collective ass for the better part of a decade). Centurylink even offers it's gigabit service to consumers sans-caps (although I'm sure there is an unpublished one somewhere). So Google's fiber strategy is working. I hope it continues to.

Eh, I live in San Francisco but even if it is chosen I really don't have terribly high hopes in Google actually extending fiber to me, I mean fucking AT&T has at least 3 Uverse boxes within 8 blocks (closest is 1 block away) and they still the best they offer is 5Mbps "dsl" service. That said, I'm content with my 100Mbps (120) comcast for $50/month, I couldn't care any less about the limited 5Mbps upload.
.

Oh and I believe Google already announced fiber in SF, and it's going to ghetto tenements and other bullshit "I'm poor so I should get good internet access" crap.

AT&T could have installed fiber to every place that has a phone line by now. I remember them talking that shit back in the early 80's when my stepdad worked there. In fact, they could have done 3 times over and still had money in the bank. The government is what made this not happen. Fear of those pesky Soviets. I hope Google DOES put fiber everywhere.

I will say that since San Antonio made to the hot list, my Time warner cable speed has gone up. Or Spectrum as the new name is supposed to be. I used to fill up my Honda at the Spectrum gas station when I lived in the deep south!!

Then you want to check out USI. Also, centrylink does provide 1gbps service in some areas. USI was plumbing neighborhoods for 1gbps fiber. There may be other local providers depending on where you end up moving to. Real estate market is bustling as well...

and how many of the places will they not expand because local government bullshit with other companies will stop them cold?

Fuck Verizion. Actually ALL media companies. Just went through going out of contract and trying to go INTERNET ONLY from a full package of TV plus all the premium channels. I was going to dump all that to save hopefully $80-$100 a month with only internet. Well their packages suck and since I am existing my package was going up by $30. About the same as I would have saved by getting rid of my DVR equipment, if I went HTPC. Only had a 75 mbps package too.

Anyway, went with Cox Cable, got it installed the same day, 200 mbps speed, full TV w/ premium channels, 6-channel DVR, etc. All for $40 CHEAPER than FIOS ($70 after the supposed price increase).

They all suck this way and basically force you to swap providers just so their salesmen can make their commissions. They never give s hit about current customers

I doubt it would actually be in my area given the distance away from the city but ffs Pittsburgh has a google office. Help us google! Comcast is screwing us hard!

they have been working on putting in fiber here for awhile.

my city just made their list (huntsville), i'm stoked, they said I should be able to connect before 2017. Until then my crappy 100mbps cable will have to do with its 300gb monthly limit.

I know, our leaders need to be removed, forcibly

I am in San Antonio.
I CANNOT wait to drop my Time Warner shit off at their office the day I get Google Fiber.
I also CANNOT wait to tell them that I am switching to Google while I drop off my shit.
Time Warner SUCKS!!!

If I only lived a tiny bit further north I could get GVTC but alas, my only choices are TW, with their sucky speeds that never live up as advertised or AT&T, who also has trouble delivering what they promise and data caps...

I'm less than hour away from Huntsville. Many people who live in my subdivision work in the aerospace industry there and commute to work. It would be nice if there could, you know, run a line out to these people and me too. :D

The prison will probably get it before you do lol

NC is old news article makes it sound like its new. They have been getting permits and running loops now for a while. Hopefully they will start offering it begining of 2017

finally they're expanding into big cities/markets...NYC should be in the next group :stop:

I'm amazed at how slowly a big company like Google is going about doing this. I'm guessing the problem is the politics and not the financial/technological side of things.

They really need to move this along faster. Current speeds and data caps are criminal.

Considering how compact and vertical NYC is, I'm surprised they haven't already. The idea is to do apartments and condos in SF... unfortunately I don't live in a sardine can and actually have a house so I get fucked out of that because I don't want NYC type of life here. However you'd need to wire up the apartments too, and I'm sure that's not what many slum lords want to do.

PLEASE COME SOUTH FROM TAMPA! PLEASE GOD SAVE ME FROM FRONTieR AND COMCRAP!

The utter irony of them coming to tampa the home of Verizon Fios(or FTTP) is delicious.

So glad I don't have to wait for Google to come to my area. The local telephone coop here offers gigabit fiber. Only $100/mo. and no data caps.

You're probably right. I'm on 3mb DSL right now. I'm going to bite the bullet soon and go to Comcast I guess. It's a lot more expensive but it's faster.

FFS Google come to Vegas. We have tons of dark fiber, and the city is not that large.

Tampa and Jacksonville but not Orlando? Come on now.

While I would LOVE for Google Fiber to hit Chicago (and it'd be a PERFECT place for it), I SERIOUSLY doubt it'll happen.

  1. Illinois is (and never really stopped being) AT&T's house. The fact that Comcast is still here is an accident and an oversight. Nothing more.
  2. The lawsuits between AT&T, Comcast and Google will drag out FOREVER in the courts in this state.
  3. The unions in Chicago will want their cut. Because, y'know, it'd be really turrible if somethin' happened to your internet project...
  4. The Chicago city government will want THEIR cut. Because, y'know, it'd be really turrible if legislation got passed that made your setup illegal...
  5. Like with the George Lucas museum, every whackoid anti-progress nutbag in a three state radius will crawl out of whatever crap pile they've been infesting to protest and sue Google.
Illinois has to be one of the most business-hostile states I've ever seen.
