Corsair Lapdog - Gaming without a Desk - Corsair recently launched its new Lapdog product and to put it simply it let's you game without a desktop. Its focus is "living room gaming" with the new Corsair Bulldog living room gaming system. While this out of our usual scope, and there are not data points to be collected, we like using it.

Damn, that boy has gotten big lol, was waiting for a real life review of this thing thanks.

Btw , FPS was typed wrong (which are both heavy online FSP players )

I've been thinking about getting one of these so I can game on my 4k 60" Samsung JU6500. I guess I'm going to need 1080 SLI too...I need a raise.

ive been here a while and this is one of the first reviews I dont agree with. Pointing out a fairly serious design flaw that can end up damaging your other peripherals and then still giving it a "gold" award baffles me. It should be a silver award at best. I would have given it a bronze with the caveat that if the issue gets fixed in a revision, it would have a gold.

I'm intrigued by the idea, only problem for me is that despite whatever living room display I have set up, having a nice monitor 18" away from my face just feels so much better. Even if I were to play on my 140" projector I think I would still prefer my 28" monitor.

Quite awhile ago I built a simple raised lapboard out of scraps. It's just big enough for a controller (I velcroed an Orbweaver to the board because I tend to shove it around while playing), keyboard & large mousepad. I use it in an office chair and it's raised to where my arms are on the armrests. It actually works really well.

Hey Kyle,

Now that I think about it, why not just take your Ratpadz design and elongate it enough to velcro a keyboard to at one end? $39.99 all day long, buddy...

Not in that business anymore after current stocks are gone. I can't compete in that market anymore. That said, there is a LOT more to the Lapdog than just making a long mousepad.

Razer has one out for a while too Razer Turret at like 160$ I think, I wonder how they compare.

When I had a computer hooked up to my TV I just used my phone as my input with Unified Remote. Worked decent enough for what I wanted to do.

And it actually comes with the keyboard and mouse. Thanks for the heads up!

I like the idea...But I feel like $120 and it doesn't include any keyboard or mouse is really over priced. It is nothing more than a fancy lapdesk. While the quality looks good and it is certainly something I would consider. The price point blows it out of consideration.

I'm still looking for the best thing ever to use at a recliner.

One of those hospital type tables would be great but because of the way the legs are (can't go under the recliner like they can a bed) they won't work.

This does not appear to be my solution, especially at that price.

I just do not understand the appeal.

1.) Why would anyone want to play games in the livingroom from the couch?

2.) Even with this thing, it would be a poor poor substitute to a real desk, ergonomically set up correctly.

IMHO, there is only one place for games, and that is on Desktops, at a proper desk, sitting in a proper desk chair :p

Any of this console/laptop/tablet/mobile/livingroom garbage is useless.

Yes erganomics is an issue. The human "lap" isn't high enough erganomically even with this device.

Im a big fan of couch PC gaming.

But another issue to consider is that PC games are generally meant to be viewed
at a very specific range level. This mostly effects text readability.

So a couch is generally not ideal.

Lol. I see a recliner as the antithesis to gaming. When I play games I try to be as alert and responsive as possible, in order to do as well as I possibly can. I associate recliners with sleepy time, the absolute opposite :p

I have yet to see someone review this thing with something other than Corsair keyboards. Yes I know it was designed with Corsairs peripherals in mind but it's supposed to work well with your own M/KB. Anyone know how the fit is using another TKL like the CM Storm Quickfire Rapid?

And what is crazy, I am looking at my son playing Warframe RIGHT NOW using the Lapdog....at his desk. I would not do it, but someone apparently likes the hell out of it. :)

1) Millions do, including me. The reason why the console is more popular. You are in the minority here, my friend.

2) Maybe so, for PC gaming that is. For people who like to game on a big TV in the living room, this is an option.

I sit in a proper desk chair all day in office. When I go home, I want to relax and game on a couch. The desk is the last thing I want to sit at.

I've been rocking a pair of these for years: https://www.amazon.com/Evelots-Adjustable-Folding-Reading-Writing/dp/B00KTI9C4I
I keep my keyboard on one and the mouse on another.
A large mousepad like this does the trick: Amazon.com: Perixx DX-1000XL, Gaming Mouse Pad - 15.75"x12.60"x0.12" Dimension - Non-slip Rubber base - Special Treated Textured Weave: Computers & Accessories

Part of the reason something like this works better for me is that I'm an arrow-key gamer. All of those all-in-one trays assume you're rocking WASD. Either that or you're permanently reaching across your body the whole time.

I game at a desk/table, but using a recliner as my seat. I got tired of replacing my office chair every year or so when the joint at the base of the seat would break due to me liking to put my feet up and leaning the chair back. Bought a big Lay-z-boy with a swivel base six years ago, and it's still going strong.

For my mouse and keyboard, I use a Logitech wireless keyboard I put directly in my lap, and an old mouse pad with a solid plastic base on the arm of my recliner. It's actually surprisingly comfortable. I've been considering the Lapdog as a replacement though, so I appreciate the "real world" style review you've put up here Kyle. A few questions for you:
  1. Did you pass your feedback about the sharp/rough edges to Corsair? I'm wondering if they might make a grommet of some kind to protect the mouse cable after this.
  2. When you had the Lapdog sitting in your lap for extended gaming sessions, was it ever too warm or uncomfortable?
  3. You said that typing was awkward/difficult...did you try playing an MMO, or any sort of game that makes extensive use of the keyboard? If so, would you recommend the Lapdog for the sort of gamer that plays games like that?
Thanks in advance.

So for $120 you get a foam pad , a flat piece of aluminum and a mouse pad?
You need to run a cord across the living room floor to your living room gaming PC. (My dog will love that tasty treat, and someone will trip over it)
If you want to power the keyboard and mouse you have to plug in a 12 V adapter? How long is that cord?
$250 if you want a keyboard.

How much does it weigh?

Will any standard sized keyboard fit in it? Or is it only for Corsair keyboards?

What does the 20 foot cord plug into? A USB port??

This sounds to me like an uncomfortable TV table, it looks huge. Interesting, but just too big and I bet in the summer your lap will be , well sweaty......

I'll stick to my desktop.

It's not about gaming. It's about working with legs elevated, which I've been basically ordered to do by the doctor.

Wow, if someone else hasn't said it.

They need to incorporate a KVM capability with the switching on the LapDog controlling a separate KVM unit that mounts to desk or chair.

And of course buy me a really nice 34" curved screen monitor as a reward for my brilliance and generosity :D

And if they haven't done so, add an attachment frame so it can be used as a standing desk.

I use a recliner as well. Keyboard on the left arm, mouse on the right, legs elevated....its great. I have a bad back so its nice for me, but i had been using an old wooden chair prior to the recliner and back problems with huge flip up wooden arms. Like an old school desk of sorts without the middle. Was great with my NEO GEO, then i got my computer and al hell broke loose. I havent gamed or used my computer with a desk in almost 2 decades now. The one drawback, i drop my mouse off the right arm all the time. Probably go through a mouse once a year. But once you get your setup right, you will never be able to go back....

What I don't get is why they didn't go wireless with it. A transceiver with a bigass LiPoly pack backing it up would be awesome for couch gaming. Wouldn't add much to the BoM either.

This is a great trend, it'll go well with the Steam controller and link bundle I just bought off the steam sale

Yea I'm sold on this. The steam controller doesn't click for me how I would have hoped so I'm going to be getting this for my steam link.

IMO, the inherent design flaw with this product is that they sized it for a 104-key keyboard. If it used an 87-key keyboard without a numpad, the keys could be centered on the lapdesk and still leave plenty of room to mouse on the right. That way it could be used for more than gaming.

Also others said this already, but I agree that at this price level it must be wireless and rechargeable. I don't want wires running across my living room. It's 2016, I'm not a goddamn caveman.

The price is a bit steap but it is comfortable to use. I recommend using a usb monitor with it. There are a few mounts you can print from thingiverse to attach to the lapdog to keep the monitor close to you instead of using a tv. Just using a computer desk with a monitor is much better but if you are looking for a little couch gaming, this setup works great. Depending on your couch however, this could prove to be a bit large and be blocked by your armrest if you sit on the sides.

I thought a lot about getting this but ended up going with the Roccat Sova and I'm very happy with it.
