According to this Nielsen report, roughly half of all households in the United States have Netflix, Amazon Video or Hulu. Interestingly, compared to televisions, computers and tablets, digital media consumption via smartphone is way up as well.

In the first quarter of 2016, daily time spent using smartphones to consume media among U.S. adults (18+) shot up 60% — from 62 minutes a year earlier to 99 minutes per day. At the same time live TV dropped 1%, declining about 3 minutes on average, from 4 hours 34 minutes in Q1 2015 to 4 hours 31 minutes, and compared with 4 hours 51 minutes in the first quarter of 2014, per Nielsen’s quarterly Total Audience Report, released Monday.

I haven't watched live TV for years (except for the company lunch room). I usually watch shows previously recorded on my DVR, or if it's live I pause it long enough so I can still the commercials.

I'm a live TV addict. Just prepping now to dump FIOS tv & dvr. Should save close to $100/mo. I already have all the VOD services as well.

I don't really watch a ton of live TV, but I do watch some. It feels like content is so divided amongst all of the VOD services that I might as well just pay for cable and get every channel + all of the On-Demand stuff. With my Comcast bundle it isn't that much more and I get everything except PPV.
Netflix is the only VOD service I pay for, and I don't really use it that much. I'd rather movies than TV shows, personally. My wife's the opposite so Netflix is really for her more than me.

I used to pay for cable and DVR so I could skip commercials, but I couldn't justify it. Now I just replaced the cable box with a Roku, and save 70 bucks a month.

I already paid for Prime for shipping.

I already paid for Netflix even while I had cable because they had enough content to justify their expense.

The tipping point was when Hulu added commercial free streaming for 12 bucks.

Now I just pay for Netflix, Hulu and Showtime, and pocket the 70 extra bucks a month :D

I'm curious, does the 50% figure include all VOD users or just the ones who subscribe. I have 3 people (including myself) on my Netflix account currently and I have had up to 4 in the past. Are those being counted as well, since I suspect there are large numbers of people who share accounts.

Live with my old man, and he's the only reason why I still use basic cable service from Comcast. $90 a month for around 45 channels with no HD content, and a 50Mbps connection. Thankfully, pops has taken a huge liking to YouTube as of late, so I'll probably go the VoD route once I drop cable in a month or two.

Its simply not worth it. The only channel he watches is ION, and CNN/FOX/MSNBC for news. There are no sports channels included at all in the basic Xfinity lineup, including Comcast's own local Comcast Sportsnet offerings. It's a gyp not allowing customers to choose their own custom lineup.

Ditched cable years ago. We use Netflix, Hulu (no commercials!), and YouTube. I had HBO Go to watch GoT. Cancelling it now that the season is over - I didn't see much else I was interested in. My wife didn't watch it either. So, see you next year HBO (when Season 7 comes out).
