AMD Radeon RX 480 Supplies at Launch

personally i think this is a good exemple of overreacting, no information was given in the tweet about vega, and was even written in a goofy manner (being on Vega mode), there is absolutely nothing in it that takes focus away from polaris, but what it does is hint to ppl who had concern for this shift in segment launch, that high end is still on track, and that now that polaris is launching, Vega will be the new focus.
and i hope they start sharing more info about vega in july, because they need to adresse enthusiasts anyway.

Well I know, when I want to sell more cards than ever before to the mainstream, in order to save my company, I always start talking about a "better" product I will be producing that will be for sale soon. Seems logical to me.

Yeah I dunno, I don't see the big deal either. It's not like Vega is replacing Polaris, they're completely different markets.

Console manufacturers talk about future products all the time even when they're trying to sell the current one. MS was hyping up Scorpio at E3, even though that's at least a year and a half away and with the launch of the Xbox One S in August.

Should they really pack their bags and quit and not release anything else? Is that the outcome we want? Or we want to complain about no highend and then at the same time blame them for mentioning their upcoming highend chip at the same time. I guess damned if you do and damned if you don't situation. We all want something to bitch at because amd doesn't have vega as of now, got it! We knew that 2 months ago too.

That is the point though, people replying to his tweeter account already seem to be hype for Vega even though no other information is given, that alone is taking away focus from Polaris. I understand that message itself could be meaningless in the grand scheme of things but people can misconstrue.

Yea, consoles are just like discrete graphics cards.

I thought it was a bit unnecessary to hype Scorpio right away since it is a year away from release and really no software to show its capabilities, it could have waited until next e3 to announce it. While I do agree console do talk about future products, I think this is the first time I see two future console announcement one after another, it just diminishes the value of slim version, but it may indeed becomes the norm now if console gets a half generation upgrade.

Heres why that was also a bad move.

Kyle is just stirring up trouble, but he's not one to gossip so you won't hear anything from him.

But yes, different market segments and all. Vega coming out in the not too distant future is not swaying me away from a polaris card. Polaris will be my tide me over card while I wait for zen (and pick one up unless it's another bulldozer class disaster) and better 4k 40"+ freesync displays that have dp 1.3 and can go to 120Hz. Sorry Asus, 27 inch screens are not enough. Then I'll get vega.

If that is true, then there is a huge disconnect between Marketing and SVP of RTG. I know in my company, things needs to review by head marketing person before anything is sent out to the public.

Exactly. I need to clear it with corp comms at my company on which way to sneeze, especially at events and posting to social media. I get a script, or at the very least a list of say/say nots.

Like Kyle said, there's something either very orchestrated with this last message or the message went off the reservation.

I think there is some truth to the 1080 outselling 970 at launch, one reason to start promoting Vega development to ensure there is still customers around when it finally launches.
As you say madness to start pushing the narrative one week out of a critical launch for AMD, so I think they have an inclination how well 1070/1080 is going.
Or it could be because the 480 is not there with the performance even when OC, relative to say FuryX or a bit higher that rumours from some sites seem to be pushing is there.
Cheers

Why would anyone believe rumors? They are for hype and fun speculation. I haven't seen a person on these boards that believes that any of that stuff. That's why none of us give a damn about AOTS benchmark numbers other than to have fun and speculate. I have yet to beat a level in Firestrike and rescue the Princess at the end.

The only thing the enthusiasts here care about is how many frames we get in the games that we play. I haven't seen a rumor that has addressed that yet.

I would say very American :) since there is no such thing as "American" to start with ALL immigrants from China Europe Africa. Unless you mean the native "Americans"?

American as in employing Americans... and promoting American industry. nVidia also hires a much higher % of Americans.

In my little one horse town there are 2 traffic lights and 2 Chinese restaurants at both ends of the town. Last night at the takeout restaurant it seems that the owner's daughter now has 3 kids or more as I stopped my car to allow them to finish the game winning play in their Kickball game. Everything is outsourced today. Try to buy a car that isn't comprised of "foreign" parts. Might as well get over it and get with the times.

Do I like "Made in America" stuff? Sure do! Will spend extra for it. But it is a rarity nowadays to see this. Nvidia has the Founder's Edition premium priced GPUs coming from Foxconn right? Think I read that at one time or another. Where is Foxconn? Texas? NYC? California? Florida? Hell Canada? So in the grand scheme of things who cares. My Intel processor says Malaysia on it if I remember right. My new GA-990FX-Gaming mobo by Gigabyte is made in Taiwan I believe. I'm not fact checking these so might be slightly off. Asus made in the USA? Hitachi hard drives? Seagate?

I feel like I should have some popcorn, or milkduds or something. Like a damn soap opera in here.

Already made my choice GPU wise... but always happy to take a peep at what AMD is coming out with.

So if now they have to drum up Vega to stem 1080 sales, what'll AMD do with GP102?

Strange I thought you were one of the most vocal here about the great performance coming from 480 and involved heavily in many of the rumours posted here :)
Cheers

Agree. None of the PC part is made in America. Just look at the bosses of NVIDIA and AMD -> Asians.

Why? Vega should be a different product then the 1080 to be honest if Vega was close to the 1080 then they did something wrong...

Even I like the RX 480 for that price it should be quite good. I didn't have that feeling with Fury.

I just have fun talking about rumors. I believe nothing unless I can see it actual data. And yes I love to find news about rumors no matter how odd or "believable". Doesn't mean that I actually covet it like it is real news.

Here is another rumor for you. Tell me how many frames this RX 480 is getting while playing Overwatch @4K and max settings.

These guys are human. What is so bad about mentioning the word vega when everyone and their mothers know its coming. Talk about making something out of nothing. The guys leads RTG, he is working on vega he is making it known. We all know he is not a perfect PR guy, not like he called anyone out. Sometimes people need to let things be. This just happens to be that case. If anyone is spinning a tweet its Us here, cuz its just that fuckin tweet. lord help us all. lol

Just one tweet can bring on WWW III

Did you see Curry of Golden State's wife tweet about the NBA after he got fouled out in Game 5 of the finals?

Curry had to do a take back for what she said.

You don't talk lightly when something is so publicized. There will be always be repercussions or benefits, or reasons for doing something.

I agree it should be good within its expected focus, but my point was regarding a poster who says no-one is paying attention to 480 rumours.
In particular this context:
Why would anyone believe rumors? They are for hype and fun speculation. I haven't seen a person on these boards that believes that any of that stuff.
If that was true we would not see the persistent arguing about 480 on this forum and everywhere else, along with the unreasonably high expectations.
People on this forum (and not just here) are talking about buying 1 or 2 of these cards based upon the only known facts, focusing on the rumours-leaks rather than looking at AMD posted measurements-benchmarks that look more mundane in terms of performance (appreciate it could be argued they are being conservative).

Cheers

From the data we've seen so far it doesn't offer previous gen high end performance though. It offers previous gens mid range performance at a low range price. To use your analogy it's a Honda for the price of a Kia. But for those who already have a Honda it doesn't offer anything new.

The benchmarks show it offering R9 Nano / GTX 980 performance. I don't see how that's mid-range when both of those cards are considered entry level high-end graphics cards. Sure they aren't flagship video cards but they are still high-end with a mid-end pricing.

ill say 2 things ;) it is a trick question if he is using a freesync monitor ;)
And If Aussie had balls he would have captured it at 60 fps ....

Youtube won't show more then 30 fps ....

Exactly!

So then why drum up Vega a week from Polaris' NDA lift? I'd be hyped if they started this AFTER Polaris is launched, reviews are out, people are getting cards. Then, with the momentum of a successful Polaris launch, start hyping Vega.

I am still confused about AMD's product stack. If Polaris is 480 and below, what's Vega? If it's Titan-level performance, what'll AMD do with the 1070? I highly doubt they'll release a super castrated version of Vega to fill the $300-500 gap.

I'm expecting Vega to occupy $500 and up, which means GP102 and full GP104. That sounds about right for Vega 10 and 11 (hypothetically). So what about 1070? I just don't see them cutting 40% or more of Vega just to have a SKU to fill that slot, I don't think it'll be that profitable. Though they can always bank on volume sales, but they look to be at least 5 months behind.

Freesync runs like shit at 30-40 fps. Its not smooth at all. Benefits are only above that with my BenQ XL2730Z.

If its that, then he did a faux pas you don't take away excite of a launch so quickly that you deem important.

Yeah, he's no sales guy that's for sure. He should have good ol' Roy talk it up on Twitter. That will get the masses talking. :p

Well you do the next best thing. Is it American owned? Does it employ American workers? Engineering, quality, ect.
