Too young. He was involved in a tragic traffic accident this morning. Aside from the Trek role, I thought he did a great job as a young Kyle Reese in Terminator, too.

Anton Yelchin, a charismatic and rising actor best known for playing Chekov in the new "Star Trek" films, has died at the age of 27. He was killed in a fatal traffic collision early Sunday morning, his publicist, Jennifer Allen confirmed. Yelchin started small with roles in indie films and various television shows, before breaking out in films like the crime thriller "Alpha Dog" and the teenage comedy "Charlie Bartlett." His biggest role to date has been in the rebooted "Star Trek" films - the third of which, "Star Trek Beyond" comes out in July.

This is pretty sad, not only because someone died but apparently how it happened and I'm sure more details will come to light as time passes. He played Chekov very well, in my opinion, and I liked his performance as Kyle Reese as well in Terminator: Salvation. My condolences and well wishes to his family and friends. :(

'Star Trek' Star Anton Yelchin -- Dead After Freak Accident

Does he own a Tesla?

Actor Anton Yelchin, known for his roles in "Star Trek" and "Alpha Dog," was killed early Sunday morning after getting pinned by his own car ... TMZ has learned.

Yelchin's friends became alarmed because he was supposed to meet them hours earlier for a rehearsal. They went to his San Fernando Valley home at around 1 AM and found him pinned between his car and a brick mailbox, which was attached to a security gate.

Law enforcement tells us the engine was running when his body was discovered, and the car was in neutral. The driveway was on a fairly steep incline. It's unclear why he got out of the car.

Cops do not suspect foul play.

Yelchin was 27.

Well, the accident sounds like it kind of went something like this. Just without the crowd and tire shredding.

2016 has been brutal for celebrities and it's still got 6 months to go.

Dang, that's sad to hear. Didn't he also play the younger Kyle Reese in Terminator Salvation?

Sad to see someone this young die. His life was just getting started. RIP bud.

what a shitty way to die.. guessing he went to get the mail and forgot to put the car in park or something? i thought he played Chekov perfectly, he'll definitely be missed.

He was a great actor. I remember him from Huff (if anyone watched that show).

Way too young to go and such a tragic accident.

Self driving cars still wouldn't protect you from other people.

Haven't seen the youtube vids? That's part of what they actually are good for.

On-topic, well I don't actually have anything to say on-topic, except what everyone else already has said or is thinking, nothing to add, only to concur.

Well, that's going to be interesting. Will Walter Koenig be attending the funeral?

sad I wonder if he didn't hear the car coming towards him?

doesn't appear he would have had much time to move or anywhere to move to. Narrow driveway and he was in the corner. By the time he would have heard anything it would have been too late. Also a car rolling downhill wouldn't make much more noise than a car running idle.

overall like others states this is terrible news. It is one thing to hear that some actor or singer died because they are out drinking or doing drugs and die of an overdose or drunk driving accident, or wrap a car around a tree doing 4x the speed limit. It is another to hear of somebody that isn't known for a party life style dying from a freak accident at a young age.

Something to be said for learning to drive a manual. It definitely gives you more respect for what's going on under the hood instead of 'press this pedal to go and this pedal to stop.'

Apparently he got out of his car without putting it in park and it rolled back to crush him against a stone wall. Kind of a dumbass way to die, honestly.

oh for fuck sake...............I want to know what car he was driving. Hand brake Hand brake Hand brake....at least hill stop if it was an automatic. I'm guessing he either forgot the handbrake or put the thing in neutral. bah. Another potential bites the dust =/

Some of you act like you've never once made a mistake while driving or turn the car off without putting the handbrake on.

I'd wager everyone joking about it has done it at least one if you've been driving for many years. It's human nature to make a mistake, forget one time something you do 99% of the time, no one is perfect.

It was a Jeep according to reports, and it could potentially be one of the models that had some defective emergency parking brake hardware in the recent past (like within the past 12 months) and it could end up being shown that his particular Jeep happened to be one of the models that was part of the recall earlier this year, we'll find out more info as time passes. It could have been completely in Park, as well, we just don't have enough factual info at this point in time.

Not on a slope with the car still running (and possibly in gear), that's a critical failure. It's a shame he paid for it with his life, but at least it wasn't someone else's.

It was a 2015 Grand Cherokee which is one of the models that Fiat Chrysler recalled because it's too easy to put the transmission into neutral when you think you've put it in park. The shifter in it is one of those newer types that doesn't stay in any particular position to indicate a gear selection, it ratchets back to center after you select a gear. They've had a lot of runaway vehicles because of it and it sounds like that's what happened in this case.

Kind of a freaky "Final Destination" way to go. I feel bad for his friends that had to find him that way.

Such a shame. He was a terrific actor, could do quality drama, action, light-hearted stuff and horror equally well. If you're interested in seeing his acting chops, I'd suggest watching Like Crazy with Felicity Jones and Jennifer Lawrence.

At the risk of making him sound too much like a hero, the only reason I can think he would have been behind the Jeep was because he was trying to stop it from rolling into the street.

Edit: Or yea, as TechLarry suggests, could be he was just getting his mail.

This is all kinds of messed up :(

I also think this isn't the last we've heard of this. The picture I get is at the last minute, he hopped out of the car to grab the mail and left it out of part or, if manual, didn't set the parking brake.

But is that what happened?

Shitty way to die. Sucks. But, can happen to anyone. Hate to sound incompassionate, but having a severely mentally ill daughter, I never know what day I could wake up and something bad happen. We all have things to worry about.

Apparently it was a Jeep Grand Cherokee with one of those stupid stateless shifters, that were recalled because it's very easy to leave the card in neutral and think it's in park. Car companies need to stop trying to redo things for no reason.

I don't know that we will ever really know for sure. Especially since he was alone. All that is know is that he was leaving, got out of his car and got behind it and somebody ended up crushed between it and the gate/pillar.

Here is the monostable gear selector from ZF that is used in the Jeep, for anyone wondering. I have to say that this is the most idiotic design decision I have seen in the operation of a car since Nissan's steer-by-wire. What is this for? To save space in the dashboard? Increase repair cost if anything goes wrong? Change for the sake of change?

Absolutely horrible design. There's no feedback about what gear you're in other than looking at the display. It's not like a normal shifter where you can tell by feel/what position it's in. Makes complete sense now how he thought it was in park when it wasn't. I hope they get sued for thinking something so stupid and dangerous was a good idea.

The original article I read just had 'Actor who played Chekov Dead' or something like that. I figured that Walter Koenig had died of old age or something.

I was incredibly saddened to hear that it was Anton Yelchin :( 27 is just too damn young.
