Doesn't matter why he wants it Day 1, it's his wallet.
Never had a chance to play the original myself. I think from what I saw and read about it, it would have been great with a few tweaks rather than the solid game it was.

Well there is an industry standard to question here. There have been plenty of games recently with controversy because what they demo isnt even close to what the deliver. Preordering based off of CGI should NEVER be done, ever, period, ever ever ever EVER. It just tells the gaming industry that the dirty practices theyve been using to beef up their wallets are ok.
If a dev showed footage at E3, then later found they couldnt meet it when they went open world or whatever the issue was they should absolutely positively be extremely public and transparent about it
This has much less to do with showing the game and more to do with the fact that Nier is a cult hit, and Taro Yoko has something of a fanbase for his off the wall games. It's no different than all the people saying Day 1 for Fallout 4, or FFVII. It's just a smaller group of people.

Maybe? I played but didn't finish the 360 version. I did however read a very thorough lets play of it. All of the endings and weapon stories. A fantastic and sad game.
I recommend anyone read the LP by thedarkid, it's archived on lparchive.
I played it. I really liked the game. It had a lot of flaws but was just a great weird experience with a rather sad ending. I'm really interested in what they're going to do as a follow up.
I've never been able to read a LP before. I love watching them but it's so hard to get the emotion and experience of playing a game across in words, that I have trouble reading what usually amounts to a dry explanation of everything.

Thedarkid does a pretty good job of not just dryly explaining. He does a good bit of writing his own lines that often feel like real dialog or thoughts from the game. I've had to double check for italics more than once. Plenty of screenshots and music. The music is the best part. He's done the whole series and is currently doing Drakengard 3.
But I do get reading an LP isn't for everyone, hell watching them isn't for everyone either.
Speaking of the ending for the first game...
The final ending that erases all your data...Well Taro Yoko has said they probably won't do that again.
