Well I'm going to give this iOS crap a try...

The non MFI cables almost always work out of the box. The issues pop up later when you start getting errors like "The connected accessory is no supported" and your phone stopped charging overnight right before a bus trip. Ask me how I know :D Or a new version of iOS kills the cables.

Anyway have fun with the phones!
If I was ever going to take a bus trip I wouldn't be buying a pair of iPhones :playful:

I will invest in more eventually, but I am going to make sure I am going to stick with iOS first.

Enjoy iMessage. It's amazing. Find my friends is a nice app too, my family all uses it. Other than that just enjoy how simple it is. I was an android fan for a long time but one day something clicked. I wanted a phone that did a very good job at doing what it's supposed to. I felt like there were a lot of choices with android to do what I wanted, but nothing I chose worked well with other things I chose. My iPhone just works. Oh, ios10 should be right around the corner (like less than 3 weeks out). The best part about having an iphone is knowing you will get the update. No if's, or when's, or carriers getting in the way. You can get the new versions of iOS the minute they are released.

You pretty much laid out exactly why I like the iPhone.

For parental controls/monitoring, there are apps like mSpy that let you keep an eye on her without her knowing.

I had seen that one & several others that are similarly priced... I could see paying that in a corporate situation to monitor employee's, but that cost is fucking insane to monitor just 1 other device.

I can monitor everything my daughter does with a 1 time 5 dollar cost for cerberus now (though its a bit clunkier as some of the stuff has to be on screen to do).

Sometimes I'm glad my parents weren't all that tech savvy since it meant they weren't spying on me like many parents seem to do these days.

What do you mean? My iPhone has been with me all around the world on busses, trains and planes. I assure you it's more than fit for any sort of journey you might want to take it on.

Are you saying this because you have access to the beta? the beta that hasnt been seeded to developers yet? you know those people that get to test new iOS before they are released? or because you know WWDC is in June? iOS 10 wont be out for developers to test unitl probably immediately after WWDC, and when its out, YOU SHOULD NOT BETA TEST an iOS version unless you want nightmares.

I haven't been on a bus ride of any sort in at least 2 decades (since I have been old enough to drive myself). Never been on a train ride at all & on a plane I don't use my phone (though I might with T-Mobiles new GoGo service, but even then I fly once every 2 or 3 years if that).

What? I think he was saying that iOS10 is being announced next week and we will see where it is heading. Also, when was the last time you did a beta test? I downloaded the beta for iOS 9 and it worked fine.

I've got my 6S+ to charge on a random 300mah charger to a bulk USB charging brick to an old Apple charger from 10 years ago.

Those MFI cables are used to prevent damage to the phone or stopping fires. A good portion of the Chinese cables were coming out with too small of a gauge, would heat up really bad and melt.

I don't have any insider info, just going off rumors and Apples history of releasing new IOS versions at WWDC. I didn't think about beta testing either. If it's announced, it's probably closer to 6 weeks out.

With how pedophiles and child rapists are these days I think it's pretty wise to spy on your kids to keep them out of trouble because they don't realize the consequences of their actions at a young age.

Exactly how I see it..

Was probably nothing, but my spying let me find out that my daughter was texting someone from Texas. It was another girl her age that also used the music.ly app my daughter does. But I have no way of knowing for sure that is the case. Set very clear guidelines after that about what she can & cant communicate to others. No real name or location & never give out her phone or email address. The few things she is allowed to use that lets any form of communication with others she always has to use the same username that I approved & it has nothing at all to do with her real name.
After the clarifying conversation from that incident there has been nothing else given out & my directions are being obeyed, but I am going to continue monitoring to be sure that continues to be the case.

Was an iPhone user from the 3GS to 6 Plus. Switched to Android just to see what it had to offer. Hated the S7 Edge, but really like the HTC 10. It almost has the feel of an iPhone.

Android is a worthy competitor, but if iOS adopted a few features, like widgets, and the iPhone got a home key/fingerprint sensor as good as the HTC 10, I'd have no hesitation going back. And, I agree on iMessage. It's one of the best things about mobile communication.

Yeah, I've even started hanging out with the local kiddie creeps, just to learn the tricks of the trade. Gone on a few runs too, so I know what to look out for. Anything for my baby.

Well so far its been a painful last 2.5 hours of trying to set this crap up.. Damn directions are retarted. They assume you already have an itunes account & an icloud account so it had me in an endless loop for the longest time with adding my payment method before I could even create my daughters apple ID. In the end all I had to do was download a fucking app from the app store & everything worked.. Fucking stupid crap..

So far I love the size, but I am not digging the hardware.

WWDC just came out and they announced IOS10. Its should be released in the next little bit. It added some new features that you and your kid might like. Some of them are things that seem kind of "meh", but Apple has a way of doing things really well.

Raise to wake - We've seen it before on Android, its finally coming to IOS.
Better lock screen notifications - Looks promising.
Cleaner control center - Its pretty cluttered right now. Something small but appreciated.
Better photo organization and features.
Way better Apple Maps - Logs of goodies here.
Better Apple Music - It better be fan-fucking-tastic, the last version sucked sweaty weeabo balls.
Transcribed voicemail - The voicemail feature is something I missed when I went to Android. They take a strong point and are making it better with transcription.
iMessage stuff - More emojis, animated shit, stuff your daughter will love.
Delete Stock Apps - Finally. Check mate android /sarcasm. But seriously this is long overdue.

From what I've read on the delete stock apps in iOS 10, you can't really "delete" them, Apple only allows them to be disabled. They are still there in the background, more or less just paused. Apple would never have the balls to actually let a user truly delete stock apps.

The apps are part of the signature that Apple uses to thumbprint the IPSW images, so they're not actually being deleted. This is because the stock apps provide functionality that escapes the sandbox (Maps app provides the assets for Maps pop-ins inside of other apps, for example). Removing them from the home screen is what people have wanted all along. Deleting them (as you can do on a jailbroken device) causes issues in other Apple apps like Safari that expect to be able to use functionality those apps provide.

Yeah, it's not actual deletion, but it's effectively what you're looking for. It frees up screen space and reduces the active footprint of those apps.

You're moving them to the app drawer, this is an attempt to declutter.

Based on what?
I agree it should be raised.. It's a minimum of 400 bucks for the cheapest iPhone and you get 5gb. Where as a gmail account is free and you get 25gb or some shit like that for it..

I'm not too worried about the iCloud storage though.. I set up all my Google apps and will let Google keep mining my data

Based on what?

Based on competition. Based on the fact that 5GB on iCloud is jack shit. My wife's iPhone 6S is constantly yelling "I'M OUT OF STORAGE" on the device and in iCloud. The easy solution? Install Google's apps and let them handle it all. Oh those photos? We'll give you all the free space for that you want. Those videos? Oh here's 15GB by default.

Except the reason Google gives you more for free is because they mine your data / photos for advertising. Apple may give less for free, but they aren't selling your info. I'm not using Apple anymore but I don't kid myself over the fact that using Google is equivalent to selling my soul to the devil.

That "omg Google is spying on everything you do" angle always strikes me as hyperbolic.

Yes, its algorithms are combing over some of your stuff... but there are anonymity protections in place, and it's not recording everything you do. It ultimately boils down to one thing: are you comfortable with getting targeted ads based on automated processes? If not, that's fine. But you're not completely ruining your privacy by going that route, either.

Microsoft's OneDrive offers more for the money. For the same price, the $10 a month 1TB subscription ($100 for the whole year) will get you 5 personal office 365 accounts with 1TB each. When you already have 1TB each from OneDrive for 5 people, why spend another dollar a month just to have 50GB icloud backups? (Microsoft also offers 1TB for $7 a month single user, $70 for the whole year.) Dropbox is also $10 (or less if you go yearly), and it does cross platform best compared to all the other cloud storage solutions. Neither of those companies makes money primarily from mining user data either.

Worst of all is Apple counts your mail, calendar, and contacts against your data. That's pretty ridiculous. This is why Apple doesn't deserve the money when they nickle and dime you on shit such as this. Take mail, calendar, and contacts off, I might consider iCloud.

This.
I have had multiple iOS devices including iPhones, but I always hated how restrictive iOS was. All of my iOS devices have been jailbroken at some point, but I got tired of playing the cat & mouse game, so I switched to android years ago and rooted every android device I owned. When the iPhone 6s came out, I decided to check it out to see what I had been missing. I fell in love with iMessage, which is the main reason why I still have my iPhone 6s. I am a huge texter, and messaging on android is no comparison. Apple was pure genius to incorporate a chat service into their ecosystem, so everyone using their devices can use it. You don't need to install a dozen different messaging apps, because iMessage does the job for 90% of users. What I like most about iMessage is the fact that photos you send look exactly the same on the other person's iDevice. On android, photos are compressed to the point they are pixelated mess. And I know that is a limitation of SMS, not android per se. But still, the native android messaging apps (whether you are talking Nexus, Touchwiz, Sense, whatever) can't hold a candle to iMessage.

It's no big secret as to why Apple is doubling down on iMessage's proprietary nature in iOS 10, in that regard... it wants to give you something that you definitely won't get by jumping to Facebook Messenger, Hangouts or WhatsApp. Cynical? Maybe, but it shows that Apple knows at least some of its strengths. The 3D Touch feature for replying to a message straight from a lock screen notification is clever, too.
