Micro Center - Computers and Electronics

This is at the Brooklyn location. Damn, I bought one when it was $319, returned it due to bad mobo killing it, and the replacement was $10 cheaper about 6 days later, now it's even lower by $20. I can't win (well maybe, I saved $10? lol), but that's a great price for anyone looking to jump on one now!

Same price at the Paterson, NJ store near me. 10+ in stock. Pretty damn good price!

8 in stock at Boston/Cambridge location. Too bad I can't get one atm as I'm going in for a total hip replacement :(

Haha damn, I believe you...

A 500 mile drive to save $30 on a CPU...

Do you take everything seriously on the internet? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Microcenter has 30 day price protection on everything. Stop in or if you paid with a credit card you should be able to do it over the phone. They have no problems refunding money

Should i upgrade from 6500 i5?

Nope. Across the last three generations of processors, high end i5s with model numbers close to the i7 versions are so similar in most use cases as to not be worth the price unless you absolutely benefit from the extra cpu features... like hyperthreading. This would be along the lines of Video Editing... and even then, if you're already sitting on a high end i5, I wouldn't bother upgrading within the same generation. It's only really worth getting the i7 if it's for a new build in these sorts of cases.

There's a reason a lot of people held onto the Sandy Bridge i5 2500k and i7 2600k processors for a reaaaaallly long time. Ivy, Haswell, Broadwell all didn't provide that much performance increase for the cost... and if you figure bang for the buck, it's even worse to go from a i5 6500 to an i7 6700.

Stick with what you've got. It's good for at least another 5 to 10 years. Seriously. I'll probably be keeping my Haswell Xeon 1231 for about as long.

Thats about what I paid for mine a while back at the 'egg :)

But it is good that the prices are coming down from the original listings @$350-400 only 6 months ago....same for the mobos and ram too :)

Wish they would build a MC here :(

Dude, thanks! That's valuable info right there, I never even thought to check their price protection policy, I just assumed there was none.

nice price.. yeah wish they would build a MC here..

Dammit. When did Brooklyn get a Microcenter? Was jealous for 15 years while living there of people. Moved abroad and BK gets one??!

Dam you! exact setup i was looking for! newegg same setup 514 cpu & mb that is...

Does hosting a plex server, for the transcoding process, merit getting an i7 in this case? I'm about to build a new PC and put my i7-920 to rest, but I think I might need to the cores for transcoding. If not then I will likely just go with an i5, b/c frankly I don't do anything taxing other than high end gaming with a 4k monitor.

Similarly, would it be worthwhile upgrading to this from an i5 4670k (@4.2ghz)? I'm gaming at 1440p with a 295x2 (and soon to arrive 1080)...

The 6700K should handle somewhere around 5 to 8 simultaneous 1080p plex transcoding jobs. If you have that many simultaneous users, then go for it.

if you are interested in making the most out of your monitor (getting 120+ fps) yes, it would be at this price. although honestly at this point games are really starting to make use of 8 threads and beyond (even games you wouldn't think like Overwatch) so you might want to consider something with more cores. check gamegpu for REAL cpu performance in games.

Thanks, sounds like I need to stick with an i7 then since I'll have several users accessing my plex server.

They have the 6800k at $400 too. I'm really into the extra cores and more memory (do some intense 3D stuff with Maya). The 6700k seems like great value though.
