HTC 10

I still don't know how a front-mounted fingerprint sensor is 'inferior.' You can't unlock a phone on your desk when the reader is on the back, and it's harder to do quickly since you can't eyeball your finger placement. The 10's design shows that you don't have to have a huge chin on the device, either. I know it's a matter of personal preference (and I suspect that might be all you're trying to express), but give a front-facing reader a shot before you rule out the concept.

I actually don't mind the fingerprint scanner on the front, but I would have rather kept the front facing speakers while putting the scanner on the back. That's all I was saying. Wife has a Note 5 and I like that setup as well just as much as in the back on my 6P. But I don't see why HTC (or anyone else) can't have both the scanner on the front along with front facing speakers as long as the make the speakers like the Xperia phones to where they take up virtually no additional room on the bezel.

I have owned phones with both front & back mounted fingerprint sensor's (s7 & g5). Hands down I prefer it on the back. The hard button on the front means that when you press the center you have to push hard vs when you hit the back or menu buttons where its a soft touch. It kinda drove me crazy as I found that I was constantly hitting the button, but wasnt depressing it so it wasnt doing what I was trying to get it to do. I spent 4 weeks with the s7 & couldnt get used to it. Also when I pull the phone out of my pocket its much more natural to get my index finger to the back sensor then it was to get either my index finger or thumb to the front sensor for times when I am just checking the time or seeing what the notification was.

I've never used a fingerprint sensor on the back, but on the HTC 10, I don't have to push any button at all for the fingerprint sensor to work. I just put my thumb on it. FWIW.

Any problems with your print being recognized? My S7 is annoyingly difficult.

Yeah. It normally takes me two tries. I think part of the problem is that when I did the fingerprint recognition setup, I did it with my thumb vertical to the phone (parallel). I should have done it horizontal (perpendicular). I'm going to re-do it and see if I get better results.

<edit>I just did that. It works much better now. I tested it 5 or 6 times, and it worked instantly, every time.

Round fingerprint readers are much better since they can actually get more of the actual fingerprint. The rectangular ones are kind of iffy with recognition in my experience.

Do you say that because it "seems intuitively obvious"? The Htc10 has a better sensor than my wife's 6s and the Nexus 6P's sensor is actually a square (just only a covered by a circular hole).

I have both thumbs and both index fingers set, they are all working horizontal or vertical 9 out 10 times, if not better. This is my 1st time with a reader on a phone and am very pleased with it. The one trick I have found is to wait about a half second to make sure it registered

I say this based on my experience with a 5S, 6, 6S and a Galaxy S6 and Tab S2. The 5S was OK, it was the first generation and had some issues, but on the 6S it works every single time and in less than a second. The S6 was completely random on when it would and wouldn't work. A square and circle will work the same way in this case based on the size on the 6P.

I see, it sounds like your experience was marred by the poor Samsung sensor then.

Not that the iPhone sensor is bad but I'm convinced after trying the sensors of the 6s, 6P, GS6 and Htc10 that the shape isn't too important but rather how the sensor was implemented.

In order of the best, I have it at 6P=Htc10>6s>S6

Its not the fingerprint sensor part you gotta depress... its using the button as home that I had to press on the gs7..

Just heard from T-Mo. Phone will be shipped in 48 hours.

Me happy! :)

This one look like what you want, t4rd

ZTE's Axon 7 is a $450 alternative to pricy Android flagships

Axon 7 is a flagship Android phone with killer specs that you never saw coming

Axon 7 is a High End Budget Smartphone for $450

Most larger sites says $500 for the 64GB and 4GB ram version. Smaller sites say $450. Engadget being the exception. It also seems to be dual sim, so this might be my next phone. Moto Z if dual sim would be preferred, purely from branding, although ZTE's two year guarantee might be good enough.

Holy balls, that thing ticks ALL of the boxes sans maybe the IR blaster since I don't see it mentioned and can't see the top of the phone. It looks wicked otherwise though. I may be selling my 6P soon already, haha. I wonder how ZTE is on software support though, in both update speeds and root/unlock bootloader support.

Wow, that ZTE looks amazing. I wish it was 5.7in screen though :(

Free repairs for two years is pretty amazing. That all sounds too good to be true. If they pull it off, wow. Good for them.

So I took delivery of my 10 yesterday. Was thinking about selling it before opening it, or just keeping it as a backup phone. I mean, there's no downside to selling a free phone, right?

Yeah... Then I opened it up and played with it. This might be replacing my S7e, to be honest. Feels great in hand, quick as can be. Tried rooting and putting a custom rom on it, and realized that I don't need root anymore (Nova Launcher, AdGuard), and brought it back to stock.

I'll be playing with it more today, and putting the camera through its paces, but this thing is truly impressive.

Oh, and HTC sent me the unlocked version instead of the T-Mobile version they told me I'd get, which is even nicer.

Yeah, it's not the absolute best in every area but it certainly is strong in every aspect for me. It's also nice to finally get near LG G2 battery life in a non-phablet sized phone.

Make sure to update before using the camera. A lot of fixes there. Also, it's easy to smudge the rear camera lens if you're used to a rear fingerprint sensor like I was lol

Mine is "Out For Delivery." :)

Definitely will consult that piece.

Yeah, I fell back to rooting the phone. The constant boomsound notification did it for me, plus why not, right? Warranty covers it, Android Pay works with root again, and Xposed/Advanced power menu are nice perks. Definitely not doing a custom rom, at least for now. Viper is a headache. Was a headache on my M9, caused my phone to factory reset yesterday & then bootloop for no reason.

Funny how The S7e was unrootable and I was perfectly fine with it, though. Ah well.

I put Viper on mine and I love it. It's not too much of a change, but gives lots of other options.

<edit>Are you talking about Viper4Android, or Viper ROM? I haven't put Viper4Android on mine, but I put the Viper ROM on mine.</edit>

Viper Rom. Apparently there's a small, small, tiny, miniscule issue where if you choose to require a PIN or password on boot, oh, I don't know... The entire phone goes into an endless bootloop. Glad they don't, you know, mention that anywhere in the first post.

So yeah, I'm back on Viper. Simply seeing the logo reminds me of the hatred I had for in on my M9, and the hatred I had for that stupid M9. Now I need to figure out how to change the DPI, because it apparently breaks the phone if you do. Can't wait for an AOSP rom.

Picked one of these up and I'm loving it. First HTC phone in a while that doesn't feel like a compromise. The phone itself looks great, seems to be built really solid, the screen is gorgeous, performance has been awesome. I have a DSLR if I'm trying to take pictures for real, but the camera in the phone seems to be good enough for those times I don't have it on me. Bless HTC for still offering an unlockable bootloader and SD Card.

My home screen, sorry bad pic, I texted this screen shot, so low quality;

I have the T-Mobile U.S. version, Unlocked, rooted with custom TWRP Recovery ( Not S-Off yet ) running LeeDroid ROM. Runs waterfall smooth, and so far getting like 5.5h Screen On time, the first full day, will get better after it settles in.

This is a really sweet phone IMO. I had the Note 5, rooted and ROM'd and that thing was a beast, super fast, crazy smooth, and just great. But...it still was a tad larger than I like, and for being a phablet the Note 5 had a small 3,000mAh battery, which is shocking Samsung put such a small battery in such a large phone. I was tweaking the Note 5 left and right trying to squeeze out phablet style battery life, but could barely keep 5h to 5.5h Screen On time at best, whereas phablets should be easily doing 6h Screen On time with ease.

This HTC 10 is already giving me my ROM'd Note 5 type battery life, and that's before big tweaks and custom kernels, this phone will only get better.

Bring on CM13 ROM's :)

How did you get rid of the Boomsound nags? I'm running Viper, and I still get it.

Been playing with my HTC 10 for a couple of days. Really like it! The home key/fingerprint sensor blows away my S7E. Gonna root it and install Viper today.

Any suggestions for an e-mail program? The native one sux. I tried AquaMail on my S7E. It's okay. Anything better?

I like to keep my Gmail separate from personal mail. Also, every mail app deletes the phone copy if deleted from the server. Mail and notifications are the only things I liked better about the iPhone.

It's a feature of IMAP to be able to delete the phone's copy in a mail client. You could use the POP3 server configuration if you dont want that.

Not sure what's good nowadays. Never mind, didn't know Inbox wasn't an independent email app.

For everyday usage, Gmail or K-9 Mail (I use K-9 as others seem to be too overly bloated w/ features, K-9 is simple). For work, Nine - Exchange

BlueMail is a privacy problem. It routes info through their servers, so you could potentially be fired if you send exchange email through their and your IT guys are sticklers. I loved BlueMail (and TypeApp, their other client which is the exact same app), but in the end, there's only two clients worth a damn for Exchange. Nine is BY FAR the best exchange client out there, and MailWise, which is... good, but not nearly as good. Only issue is that Nine costs $10.

I really like this HTC 10, but man I wish Google still kept the GPE phones going. The One M8 GPE in my opinion was the coolest Android phone of 2014, a beautifully made device, running stock Android directly supported and updated by Google. A GPE 10 would be the best. Well I guess the second best thing, would be the stable release of CM13 on the 10, which is months away, but will be worth the wait.

I am also looking forward to Cyanogenmod, but I have to say that Sense has gotten pretty good. Way less intrusive than it was on my last HTC.

Im getting a full day of use on a charge, which is good enough for sure, but I see people getting two days. Am I doing something wrong, or do they just not use their phones?

They're not using their phones or have some wicked ROM/kernel/root tweaks on there and/or they hardly have any apps installed on it. No phone today will last today with any sort of moderate-heavy usage unless you're doing something crazy like leaving mobile data disabled while always in power save mode.

HTC has been heavily rumored to be the manufacturer on two new Nexus phones due in Sept / Oct, a 5.0" and 5.5", guess time will tell.

Also Huawei is also rumored to still be on board for making a next gen Nexus device, now maybe they are making a Tablet, or maybe the rumors of a 7P are true, basically the same overall phone as the 6P, except with updated specs like the SD820 + 4GB RAM, and thicker stronger aluminum build, like the iPhone 6 to 6S change are rumors I have also heard.

So it may realistically play out like this. HTC makes a high end smaller Nexus phone at 5.0", and Huawei makes the 7P, and then the Nexus tablet made by HTC.
