Go 1440p or stick to 1080p?

Quick question, upgrading my monitor soon from a a dell 20" LCD with a max res of 1680x1050 to a 25-27" monitor

My question is this, budget is about ~$250, my buddy recommends getting a 27" full 1080p monitor versus a smaller 1440p since 4k will be the newer standard in a few years.

looking at a
ASUS VC279H

or a Acer G257HU

any thoughts?
 
I would not recommend going with a 27" 1080p, as the low ppi makes it look awful when you're sitting 2ft or closer (IMO).

I'd look into a 24" 1080p, of which there are many out there in your budget range. If your budget were higher, say double, then I'd recommend going with a 25" or 27" 1440p. But I'd steer clear of 27" 1080p.
 
Agreed. 27" 1080p is horrid IMO. Bought one, refunded it almost immediately. Got a 27" 1440p which is WAY better. I do still like my old Dell 24" S-PVA screen at 1920x1200 though. Super blacks, no IPS glow or backlight bleed. Look at something used if you have to stay on budget. Don't get suckered in by a TN panel. Colors look washed out to me.

Why not try a Korean? Tons of people have. Comes DHL in 2-days. I just bought one from this guy last week.

Contrary to popular belief, 27" 1080p is fine for most. Only the most [H] will care about the ppi at that size. It's not like you're running 640x480 again. If you are a casual user (by [H] standards), you'll be fine with 27" 1080p. The amazing thing about that size and resolution is that there are so many options that price and panel lotteries aren't as much an issue as when you make the jump to 1440p. At 1440p, there are fewer (but still many) options, the price is higher, and panel lotteries take form. You could also get a Korean monitor. They tend to have a higher rate of dead/stuck pixels, backlight bleed, and other general defects, but the casual gamers seem tolerant of those defects due to the price.

That said, your buddy is wrong. 4K becoming a standard has no bearing on your choice of 1080p or 1440p today. Between the two monitors that you listed I would personally take the Acer. It has generally favorable reviews, is a great size for a desktop monitor, it's 1440p, and it's at a great price. It's probably the best budget monitor out today.
 
One last question, what about a 24" 144hz monitor as opposed to a 27" 60hz monitor? both being 1080p
 
Get a nice 27" 1080p. Forget about 1440p unless you are ready to shell out on the new top overclocked cpu and at least one GTX1080 to get comparable performance in games to 1080p.

Without looking at the specs of either monitor beyond what you have written: 24" 144hz.

However, I am almost certain that all 24" 144~240hz monitors that exist (or will exist) are TN panels, and only those with 180hz+ monitors have a chance to be native 8bit TN panels rather than 6bit with dithering panels. True 8bit TN's are only in 27" 1440p panels currently.

You will need to see the monitors themselves side by side and choose which ever one looks better.

Many here will probably shout "TN sux", "TN should DIAF", "TN is why monitor techs suck" etc etc., but my opinion is that IPS/VA are FAR from being the holy grail of monitors, which is why that, despite the fact that I have BL3201PT (32" IPS 4k), I still use my PG278Q (27" TN 1440p), and it's not just the refresh rate.

Guess I am [H] elite! I put two 1080P 27" dell IPS monitorsnext to my 1440P Dell IPS 27". Returned them the same day. PPI is terrible. Extremely noticeable to me. I could actually see individual pixels. No thanks. Went back to dual 24" 1080P and a single 1440P
 
I suggest looking at them in person if at all possible, those two monitors use different panels.

This monitor uses pwm dimming to control the brightness, it can be a problem even if you don't notice it. There are other 144hz flicker free monitors sold by benq iiyama aoc acer.

If 60hz is enough and you prefer image quality over fluidity then you should consider a 1080p ips or va\amva panel as opposed to tn, 24" to 27"

I absolutely love my two new Viewsonic XG2401 24" monitors (1080p @ 144Hz) that include Freesync. I'm currently using them with a GTX960, but considering a RX480 in the near future.

I went from 24 inch 1080P to a Acer XG270HU and I cant go back to 1080P for gaming. Get whats in your budget after you have taken time to look at the monitors in person, don't forget you may end up needing a faster gpu depending on you gaming preference. And no a gtx 1080 is not a must for only 1440p.
 
Personally I find 27" 1080p to be just awful. Unless your eyesight is bad I'd go with a 24" if your going 1080p, and if you're a gamer (especially for FPS) I would also recommend going with a 120-144Hz display if you can fit it in your budget. I think the Korean monitors as suggested might be a good option at your budget, or a nice 24" 1080p.

both have same max resolution. will be using mostly for gaming (WoW, etc) and general internet. very casual gamer nowadays.

if you are considering going the korean route OP, do not buy a TRUE10/multi-input version of the QX2710 if you want to overclock, because they can't. buy a single input DVI one, like this. these are still the best value monitor to this day. takes five seconds to create a custom resolution and you are guaranteed at least 96 Hz.
