AMD RX 480 Cost per WSJ: $199

Here's some fun math:

380X --> "480" (Fury) would be an increase of 59% performance-per-dollar.
GTX 770 --> 970 was an increase of 32% performance-per-dollar.

So if the 480 matches the Fury at $200, it will be nearly twice as "impressive" as the 970's gains.

Using the 390X instead,
380X --> "480" (390X) would be an increase of 46% performance-per-dollar.

I may have to dust off the amazon card soon:) You make that sound pretty good

If the RX 480 does actually offer Fury level performance @ $199, I'll probably get one as a nice backup card (also depends on the GTX 1060's price/performance).

Wow $199!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...

You know what would be perfect timing for this release of the card? Package it with the new Deus ex!!!

That card would fly off the shelf for that price/performance and free game!

Holy FFFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Didn't even think of Deus! If TRG/AMD packages this game with it, they'll be selling everything they can possibly make!

And I'll be in 2! :D:D

Shoot, if it performs on par with a Fury for $199 I might buy two to mess with crossfire again. I still have $550 sitting in my Paypal account from selling my 980ti a couple months back. Then after being disappointed like I always am with SLI/Crossfire, I'll keep one card for my son's rig and hang onto the other until Vega/GP102.

Exactly what happened, and yet exactly what we got.
Uh, it hasn't been announced yet, so I wouldn't pop the corks just yet.

I'm guessing there's at least one mixup going on. Like the WSJ listed price of $199 isn't for the full blown version that we have leaked specs for.

just realized something... Why 8GB ram on this card?
That & the price screams wtf to me. At the very least, it is clear that the part will not be able to compete with quite a few GPU's currently on the market. Waiting to see a full benchmark write up on it in the near future :).

At the 980 - 390x - Fury level, 8gb of ram can actually help, especially with crossfire... VR is likely to benefit from it. I would also assume that DX12 using more hardware will increase vram usage with time, and there is an increasing likelyhood of bad console ports that could use up more vram in DX11...

Marketing, really.

Also this card can probably play some games that will actually push VRAM usage above 4GB, even at 1080p. Going forward we'll probably see games pushing higher texture resolution to create the illusion of better image quality, even at lowered rendering settings. Also IIRC the trend with AMD cards is that they tend to play nicer at high AA compared to NVIDIA, so having extra VRAM to push high AA is also a possibility.

Yup I'd say for mGPU (Crossfire in old DX11 speak) it would be very worth the $30 or so instead of spending it on an expensive HB bridge thingy.

I'm interested to see what kind of performance the RX 470 or whatever they are going to call it is going to offer. I'm also looking forward to seeing how well, if at all, these cards can overclock.
