ASUS PG279Q 144hz 1440P IPS G-Sync

I guess at this point the only thing I'm waiting to see is what gets announced for the Fall and if that's worth waiting for otherwise I'm ready to roll the dice on this.

My monitor arrived on Saturday and I unboxed it today. Just wanted to let you all know it has an April 2016 build date. So far based upon my research most people seem to have January build dates, don't think I've read about anyone having one that recent. Not sure if this is good or bad - in a few hours I'll fire it up and post my impressions.

should be a good thing if that post by someone is true about the added QC

Well I wish I had something better to report. The colors on this monitor are really something else as is the design. Yes there is backlight bleed but it doesn't seem as bad as the photos I've seen and varies greatly depending on the angle of view. It is clear to me seeing this panel for the first time that this is an inherent part of the tech. The problem with my panel is multiple dead pixels all over the place. I count at least 4 major "bright" ones and if I look around it almost looks like there are about that many more that also are glowing an off color just not as brightly? Ugh. Not sure what to do, going to bed. Any way to try to get rid of these dead pixels?

Here's what I don't get. Why are the mid/high-priced monitors having all these problems with dead/stuck pixels? I have had ZERO issues with any name brand (Samsung, HP, Dell, BenQ) <$300 monitor when it comes to dead/stuck pixels. Whenever I try one of these $400-$900 panels, I see all kinds of defects.

debatable. unethical business being cheap

incompetent people in charge or any number of things.

I think its a little bit of both. Asus has this every gaming monitor they sell....so does acer but Dell never has this.

I think Acer.Asus and who makes the panels thing most gamers are too stupid...they probably are right.

The common denominator seems to be AU Optronics panels that are being used by several companies, most notably Acer and Asus.

Whats even funnier is that my 27" korean IPS that i bought about 3 years ago is still working perfectly, no dead pixels and only a slight backlight bleed when the screen is all black. I can overclock it up to 120hz if i want (i leave it at 96hz ) and it only cost me $290.

My unit went back to newegg today. There was an additional defect that I neglected to mention. Around 3 inches from the bottom bezel, and about 1 inch from the left bezel, there was a very pronounced pinprick of light that would shine through any white image being displayed on the screen .You could drag a white window across it and see it every time. It was almost like there was a miniature flashlight pointed directly out of the screen at that location. I really wanted to like the monitor and I am not the type to buy and return PC components but this was pretty crazy for a $800 unit.

Sorry about your monitor Geddon-jt - I so want one of these but it does seem a lottery if you get a decent one or not. Dead pixels on a monitor this expensive is simply inexcusable and not an option. I have nearly pulled the trigger about 5 times this week on Amazon but the QC seems so poor even with recently manufactured panels that I am going to hold off I think.

LOL, that's me. It's sitting in my "save for later" area on Amazon and I simply can't make myself do it so I guess I'll just keep on waiting and waiting and waiting....

This monitor has been sitting in my wish list since release. I desperately want to upgrade from my GTX 970 & 24" 1080p TN to a GTX 1080 & 27" 1440p IPS.

On paper, this monitor is everything I've dreamed of having in a desktop display. ASUS' inability to produce it with consistent quality is driving me crazy...

I still don't understand what is stopping you guys from simply playing the return game and having some patience until you get a monitor that is perfect. I had to return one Predator, and this was when they first released a year ago. My second unit was flawless and I have been enjoying it since. Look at it as an investment into something that will last you years. If you have to return 2 or 3 panels and wait a few weeks, it will be worth it. Remember that only a minority of people complain on the forums, and these panels have been out a while now giving manufacture process time for QC improvement. Chances are good yours will be fine on the first try.

Get off your butt and place your order. You aren't gaining anything by sitting on the fence. Amazon has a super liberal return policy and I've played the panel lottery game with them and it's been fine.

I rolled the dice on this monitor as a refurb from Newegg. It came with just the cables tied with what appeared to be grocery store ties and the monitor was not in plastic it was just sitting in the foam. Luckily I think I got a good one, minor bleed but not much and no dead pixels. Not bad for $550!

okay so are these any better now? I was going to buy one off newegg since I now pay tax at amazon :/

I went through 2 of the refurbs. The first had a pressure spot in the bottom left, the 2nd has BLB but its not unbearable. IF I paid $800 for this I'd be unhappy but at $550 I can accept it.

Needless to say I don't think QC has improved.

Just purchased one from Amazon, it had a QC quality control sticker on the box. The screen is flawless no issues so far

Just bought an Acer 271 with the same panel and my xp has been the same. No dead pixels, minor blb. Standard IPS glow. Very happy so far.

And of note to anyone with a korean IPS from the last few years. I have a Catleap 270 sitting next to it (look at history if you want to see it) and while this does have some AG compared to the glossy Catleap, it's not bad, and I'm not an AG fan. Very light AG.

Panelwise, the only difference I see in a 2am dark room is slightly more IPS glow in the corners than the LG Catleap panel. Overall happy with it. Being the same pane, I'd expect the same with the Asus.

back lighy bleed photo please

Really don't know the "correct way" to take a blacklight bleed photo, but i took a quick photo with my note 5. It does show some backlight bleed but I don't see it. I always run a black desktop.
Even on my dell U2410 next to it, I don't see any? I think the camera exaggerates it. dunno

Wow, never seen such terrible BL bleed -- it made it through the base of your monitor all the way to your keyboard. ;)

i just bought one...i'll play with it tomorrow and post it compared to my u2412m and my P2715Q (or whatever the 27 in 4K IPS is called

WTF!!! this has an AC adapter...how trucking stupid.

do i really need to install the drivers?

EDIT: definitely has some BLB but it should be tolerable. Seems slight. none of my other screens have this

okay in dark the BLB is quite notice but in light very faint but there. it also has worse IPS glow over my P2715Q.

I am going to ignore the u2412m in comparison because it is AFRAC and its older and i am lazy to do all 3 screens haha. So only comparing the asus to P2715Q

I am going to calibrate both first (no GPU calibration because that is glitchy. Just RGB) If they had built in LUTs i would :/ Wish that was standard

EDIT:

(This is at 120 nit)
There are only 2-4 notice BLB spots and they are only really easy to spot in pure dark room. I am not posting photos at the moment because it does not really reproduce it. The IPS glow is more noticeable between the two screens.

I still think my Dell is a better panel by far but this Asus is very tolerable at first glance so I think i did win the lottery here.

I'll mess with it over the next 2 weeks and keep posting in this exact post.

oh out of the box the RGB was almost spot on which was good. I only had to go from 100 100 100 to 100 98 98.

Also the screen reported ~350 nit max vs the ~450 nit of my 4K dell.

350nit vs 450 nit

The BLB is now much more noticeable and is a noticeable issue in the top right and a minor issue in bottom right. Left top/bottom there is a very faint bleed around the entire edge but very subjective.

100% brightness the top right is even noticeable with lights on in room and may bother some. I'll be using this as purely a gaming monitor so i shouldn't have an issue with it but some might depending there usage. I could see 100% bright video play back of a dark movie being annoying.

I still think I over all won the lottery here but i still find the BLB unacceptable (it should never exist in my book) but i doubt i can do much better from what others have posted and since there is no other option i am stuck with this screen.

okay this is weird. I have nvidia control panel set to use ULMB globally and I have set ULMB in Saitn row the third appliation setting yet when the game loads it turns off ULMB and defaults to 144hz and grays out ULMB option within monitor. Why does thta one program bugger up?

That Street Fighter screen shot looks great.......I doubt my regular PG278Q could do that if I buy this monitor I think I'll keep my regular swift then sell my BenQ 24" 144hz which I could never ever get the colors right but I like it because of it's size but I prefer the 27" for almost anything. I see Amazon grouped all of the ROG SWIFT monitors into one big review.

You were looking at the screenshot on your current monitor, so whatever you saw is what your monitor can do. You're not able to actually see what his monitor can do on your monitor :)

Well, one thing about PG278Q, is that when calibrated (Spyder 4pro, came free with my BL3201PT) to the same spec as BL3201PT, the only thing I notice from the two is basically the gamma shift as a result of TN, colourwise they are pretty close.

I moved back to my PG278Q as my main monitor, since I now only have 1 970. Smaller screen sure, but it's giving me far less of a headache in BL2 than the 4k panel.

I know what I'm looking for it's the blacks that stand out on IPS panel I can see it with my TN. I already owned a IPS in the past.
