So this just happened. One of my son's friends made the claim that DOOM looks "just as good" on the console as it does on the PC. After we were all done laughing, out came the console version of DOOM to be compared to the PC version. Needless to say folks, don't drink the kool-aid, the PC version of DOOM is the only way to go. I'll let you see if you can tell which screenshot below is from the PC.

Steve,

Aside from decent AA, to be honest DOOM looks very "Console" like in general. This is with having everything maxed out. Not that it's a bad looking game.

Well of course the console version doesn't look as good. Console games haven't looked better than the PC version since never.

Damn, that looks even shittier than I was expecting. Does this run at 30 FPS on consoles, too?

The Xbox One version is a little blurry. PS4 version looks pretty good. Obviously PC looks best.

Here's a good comparison of the consoles and PC

I've been out of the loop with PC gaming these days so I picked up Doom on the Xbox One.

Side by side you can tell the difference but it's not a deal breaker at all. I never would have noticed the overall blurriness in the game if it weren't for this screenshot next to the PC one. Where I am sitting in my couch about 7 feet away from my TV the game looks great.

Not true. Uncharted 4, despite it being only 1080p/30fps, easily looks better than anything out on PC right now.
I've been hearing that a lot around the internet and I have yet to see a screenshot or HD video that backs up that statement.

I have Uncharted 4 on PS4 and even I don't believe it. The game has it's moments, but I don't think its the best looking game out there.

Based on that video the PS4 version still looks blurry as hell. The PS4 versions has slightly less aliasing, though. Still looks like shit, especially those textures.

Come on guys...

I get that this is the [H] but 'looks like shit' is a massive overstatement. Yes, the textures are lower res on the consoles but the game is still comparable to the PC version at 1080p.

I may get heat for saying this but PC gamers that rant and rave about how much better graphics are compared to the consoles are the internet equivalent of the type of person that hangs bull balls on the rear hitch of their truck. Really, you're only patting yourself on the back for having such a capable PC...it's not even really about the game's image quality.

I took a screen shot last night to use as a wallpaper, the consoles aren't bad but a high end PC is just better.

Enjoying a game that is fun to play has nothing to do with graphics. The topic at hand was a graphical comparison between the PC and Xbox ONE version. The Xbox ONE version is objectively bad in comparison. I own both an Xbox ONE and PS4, myself, but the fact that they are graphically inferior to anything on PC doesn't prevent me from enjoying the games I play on them.

It does look amazing! I've seen better on PC (Vanishing of Ethan Carter comes to mind). But, it does give the PC a run for it's money. Naughty Dog really knows how to use their assets.

Some games, I'll play on the console because of Xbox Live, etc.. Others, like Doom, I want the absolute best visuals - so it's the PC.

I wouldn't be disappointed in the console version, but I know it's not going to have the same visual fidelity as the PC. Even at 1080P.

The consoles textures are set to medium, at absolute best.
Those textures are so washed out it's not even funny.

I'm not biased towards one or the other, but they definitely don't look the same...
That said, the game should still be fun as heck on those consoles, good graphics or not!

My post was entirely about the comment you made on the graphics. I didn't shift the topic.

The game is fun no matter what platform it's played on. The lower res textures and the general blurriness on the consoles are comparable to the PC version since console gamers don't play right up in front of the TV like I'm assuming most PC gamers play (sitting at a desk not very far away from huge monitors).

Make no mistake, I fully agree that the PC versions of any game are better in general for other reasons like keyboard/mouse, mods, configurability, etc...

So we're now arguing about a game with 2009-caliber graphics, that runs at 60fps and is designed around you being constantly kinetic.............and we're comparing screengrabs. Slow Day?

I don't think they look all that different. The PS4 and XBox might as well be the same and the PC version is definitely sharper/cleaner, but I doubt you'd notice if you were in the middle of deathmatch. Console textures or resolution is lacking a bit is all.

I agree with the OP from this subject. I have a pretty beefy rig and love me my PC games, but on a very nice TV (JS9500 which supposedly upscales all content to 4k - I don't buy it) Uncharted has been graphically fantastic and at times breathtaking. I actually used the in game screenshot mode just to show my wife who is a graphic designer how great it looks. There are little things I notice that is done better on PC, such as water physics, but overall it's probably the best looking game I can think of. The in game cinematics that run off the engine are just "wow."

I'm with you guys 99% of the time, PC Master Race vs Console Peasants, but this time he's right. If it were on PC sure it would certainly look better, but Naughty Dog did a great job of flexing what muscle the PS4 has. Plus it's the best single player experience out there. Probably ever.

<Inserts Not sure if serious meme here>

I'm dead serious...have you actually played the game?

Yea, but if there were a PC version, it would look better :D.

True, but there isn't. Sooooo it doesn't! ;-)

I've been hearing that a lot around the internet and I have yet to see a screenshot or HD video that backs up that statement.

Look harder or go actually play it.

I have Uncharted 4 on PS4 and even I don't believe it. The game has it's moments, but I don't think its the best looking game out there.

What is the best looking game then? What game, at the same time, has better detail, lighting, physics, etc? Truly interested to know!

Ethan Carter looks great but I think as an over all package UC4 looks better. It's more impressive technically and it's detail is far higher. Ethan really has good foliage but that's about it from what I can see.

It comes down to cost. Consoles can be had for $300ish while an upper mid-range GPU alone will cost that, if not a little more. Then there's another $500-700 (minimum) in components to factor in. So what ends up happening is the $1000+ PC owner bashes on the consoles while ignoring the extra $700 spent.
Kinda like a Corvette owner boasting how much better it is than a Mustang.

Who cares? I rented the game on my PS4 and played a couple hours on it...the action is so intense you aren't even paying attention to the graphics! You are too busy dodging fireballs and trying to make sure that damn cacodemon doesn't sneak up behind you to notice how pretty the pixels are!

There are some textures for random stuff in the background that when I approach it it doesn't look a lot better... but for most of the walls and piping and stuff, with things maxed (using nightmare in the two slots that allow it) and the renderer on gritty, it looks pretty damned good to me.

Consolers are then the Internet equivalent of the Chihuahua. Lots of noise, not much dog.

I think we can all agree that a PC can out do a console. I think the original post was about a console person saying their PS4|Xbone is better than the PC. That is not a true statement.
However, is it a fair comparison? No. A single GPU could cost more than a console. Enjoy your game on whatever you want to play it on.

Both versions look fine, what makes PC version better is m/kb and higher FPS.

What I have found is the visuals really start to shine when you run 4k, but still a tad on the soft side. There are some areas that look pretty dang amazing, such as the Foundry.

Cost is at the center of this debate. I'm not a console gamer, haven't owned any console since a PS 2, but for someone looking to play AAA games cost effectively, at least from the hardware perspective, I think a console is much cheaper and easier than a PC for the average person. And it's not like the graphics look like pong for most games compared to a PC.

There will of course be discussion of cost of acquirement of games, upgrades, that sort of thing. But consoles are basically plug and play devices for gaming at affordable prices and overall the formula works.

This statement alone speaks volumes for the bewildering wake of opinion between the two platforms. As an exclusive PC only gamer, I...I don't know how to address that remark.

I like to call it 'Doom 3.5'...

I honestly don't see why the game is getting so much attention aside from the fact that it's associated with a legendary franchise. I guess the gameplay must be really good, because the graphics are completely underwhelming to me. Honestly Doom 3 with all of the graphical mods looks better to me...

Now in the interest of full disclosure I have not played the game yet, I give my opinion purely on seeing lots of videos of the game in action. As I said above the gameplay really must be what makes the game so awesome.

I'll be buying it as soon as it hits the discount bins and bundle sites. I'm betting on a 75% discount before Christmas. :D

It's getting a ton of attention because the game is much better than most people expected. It captures a lot of the feel and mechanics of Doom 1 and 2 while modernizing the game in a way that didn't ruin it.

It is much like the original, but I do not like the movement speed of the game. It's just too fast. After playing for about three hours, it feels very Arcadish. Fun, but quickly getting boring.

Reminds me of why I game PC-only. But we all had fun gaming back when the graphics were much worse than what we see on the Xone and PS4, so choose your poison and quit yer bitchin'.
