To be fair, the weather was bad and there was allegedly lots of fog.

…she was looking for a right turn in Tobermory, Ontario, a place with which she was unfamiliar. She missed it. Instead, she just kept on going. She went off the road and straight into Georgian Bay, which is 100 feet deep in most places and as much as 500 feet at its extremes. She had driven straight down a boat launch. The Ontario Provincial Police didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. However, Constable Katrina Rubinstein-Gilbert told the Toronto Sun: "How the launch works, it's not an airborne thing. It's not 'Dukes of Hazzard.' It kind of goes off the road and the launch just drops all of a sudden."

Look at the road first, not the screen! Same applies when walking.

You know the saying.. The kid who eats too many marbles, thin out the herd, err... damnit!!

not that it was ever OK before....but how is this still happening? GPS navigation has been common for the better part of a decade (2 decades maybe?). aren't people used to how to follow their directions at this point?

Can you imagine how bad these people would be without a GPS? Prolly get lost on the way to the bathroom.

my sister lives on a golf course that has lots of sudden turns that if you miss it will put you in a lake or woods within 30 yards of the leaving the road. one part has a cart path that looks like it is the road if you arent paying enough attention. I'm told that they have had more than a few visitors drive into the lake at night. It doesnt sound like the gps was really part of the issue either.

Seriously, this isn't an airplane, you can't drive just with instruments alone.

If the woman was following the GPS's directions, then she wouldn't have missed the turn and drove off into a lake.

Agreed she didnt get into the water following the instructions from the GPS. She went into the water because she FAILED to follow the instructions from the GPS.

I live about an hour from where that incident happened. I've driven the road myself. It is a very, very easy thing to do, especially late at night, in rain and fog and unfamiliar territory. You are driving down a provincial highway entering Tobermory. The sign says "Business District". Google it to see for yourself. The street is called Bay St. Two blocks later the street ends in the unmarked and unblockaded boat launch. The water off the end of the ramp is a good 10m deep. The woman was lucky she was able to get out and swim 30m to shore in 4C water. No fault no failure here. And no, according to the Ontario Provincial Police, question of alcohol involvement. You can see a picture here. Woman follows GPS; ends up in Tobermory harbour

This is discrimination! I demand a man do the same thing in the name of gender equality!

One more reason we need self-driving cars, so idiots don't drive into lakes.

I can see hitting a deer in thick fog, but what this women did was flat out retarded. Now that I think of I'm shocked no one has hit a deer and blamed it on the GPS cause they blame it for everything else. Sorry officer I was drunk, but in my defense the GPS told me where to go.

If it is so foggy that you can not tell if you are driving on the road, an airstrip, across a lake then it may be time to pull over and wait a while so it clears out.

Forgivable, if she was using the GPS to retrieve sandwich ingredients.

She put too much faith in the GPS technology to bail her out of a bad situation. Not sure you're learning from her experience.

im there often and the road that comes down the hill takes a 90 right but it you stay straight your drive down the ramp lol, on the bright side shes 50 feet some some great breakfast lol

Yeah she wasn't texting AT ALL.

Also I immediately thought of Risky Business.... Who's The U-Boat Commander? I couldn't find a clip of just that, but it's on here @ 35 seconds :

I actually went out to find this after I read your post.

Though, after watching it, there was another vid in the recommendations of that woman being invited on to suggest that it was fake. So I don't know if it's real or fake, because she could easily be trying cover up idiocy. I didn't really watch the 2nd video though, it was just suggested in the comments of both.

She was obviously not looking at the road and was texting or something else that she can't say because she would be charged. Whenever you are at fault for really stupid things you scramble to hide it.

I understand that sometimes the GPS isn't up to date with construction or road blocks occurring in an area and if you're unfamiliar with the area, it's definitely tougher to navigate. Regardless, one should be more mindful of the road in front of you and drive slower in dense fog or even come to a complete stop and pull over if you can't see the road at all.

If the fog is so fucking thick you cant see 5 feet in front of your car then perhaps you should just stay inside.

Absolutely no reason to bring politics into this discussion.
Sure there is if you are insecure in your own political ideologies. Whatever someone is most vocal about is something they are probably guilty of. These kind of random outbursts speak volumes of people like him.

This is kinda funny. Most GPS programs dont work worth a damn, others work fairly well, but none are perfect. Try using it to navigate around NYC. Half the time it sends you up one way roads, but if you arent an idiot, you can simply pull over and zoom out to find your way around to go where you need to go, something i had to do recently to get out of the Bronx, luckily i enjoyed yelling out the window at all the Ranger fans who were going to see Pittsburgh kick their asses that night by taking the train. So it was kind of worth it...lol

My advice, she was an idiot who doesnt know how to ZOOM OUT to verify your surroundings before you follow blindly into the water.

Ironicly there is a ferry there that goes to South Baymouth. Maybe the GPS was telling her to go on the boat! :p

Wonder if the town will make any changes to the roadway / ramp area to prevent accidents like this from happening again.

"She missed it. Instead, she just kept on going"

Article title should read "Woman ignores GPS, ends up in lake"

The access to the ferry is the next right. And the ferry doesn't run at night... she missed an earlier right turn, apparently.
