Seiki SE42UM 4K Ultra UHDTV $250 egg

I've got the streaming version of this (SE42UGT) and the SE42UM is pretty much the exact same set minus the streaming features.

What I can tell you:

- It does do 4K@60hz when connected to a PC via HDMI 2.0.
- It does NOT do 4:4:4 chroma which means some combinations of text and background colors can look slightly smeared or blurry.
- It has a VA panel.
- Lag when setup properly is average for a TV, around 25ms.

While making note of the second point above, I've been using this since before Christmas and it's been just fine as a PC monitor, especially for games or video content where the chroma limitation doesn't really matter and it looks absolutely stunning for these tasks.

Also note that you may need to update the firmware out of the box to get proper PC support with minimal lag. The SE42UM shipped with firmware that had a lot of lag when connected via PC, but there is an update available that fixed this and it's on the Seiki download site.

Not a bad choice for $250, unless you find the 4:4:4 chroma support thing drives you nuts. Some people are more sensitive to it than others -- I personally couldn't stand it back when I was looking for a TV to use as a monitor. Others like NoxTek don't mind it.

It's basically the cheapest way around to get that many pixels.

Oh I didn't say I don't mind the lack of 4:4:4 chroma, but at this price it can be easily overlooked. Like you said it's the cheapest way to get that many pixels. :D

i wonder does my R9 280X offer that HDMI 2.0 ?

pretty sure my card would be too weak to play BF4 @ 4K right ?

but could i run @ 1080P on a 4k monitor ?

I'm not too familliar with the AMD side of things, but I'm pretty sure that card doesn't have HDMI 2.0, so you would need a DisplayPort to HDMI adapter. A lot of people with this TV and AMD cards seem to go that route with great success. Otherwise you'd be limited to 4K@30hz via HDMI 1.x.

As for the performance of the R9 280X, as I said I'm not fully versed in AMD cards but I believe it falls just short of a Geforce GTX 970 in terms of performance. I would THINK you could run lots of games at 4K with acceptable framerates if you turn down the eye candy some. I know I could on my GTX 970. :)

Damn, just bought this last week for 280. I'm using it as a 3rd monitor for just watching movies and stuff and it's pretty nice for the price. To upgrade the firmware to reduce input lag: Seiki SE42UM Thread - Page 23

I bought this TV at HHGregg or whatever that store is called. You really can't go wrong for the money but the TV can do some weird things. For example I had to play with the TV a lot to get 4K 60Hz to work as it should with the HDMI 1.4 cable. This was using the NVIDIA Shield btw which works perfectly fine on my Vizio TV 1080P TV.

Also sometimes the TV would turn on with the Shield and other times it wouldn't. Those have been my only complaints.

Does Seiki produce another similar model that is 4:4:4? If so, what does that go for?

The only thing they offer that does 4:4:4 chroma at 4K/60hz are their professional line of displays. Last time I checked the 40" was close to $800...

I have 3 of these. Bought on ebay for 224 with 20$ ebay cash back on each.. I wanted buy another but came put to 248 with tax.. 225 on ebay all day.. not hot. But hot monitor flash to fw update and get settings to stay display port 60hZ with 4k.. 270x crossfire on one pc.. 980sli on another... both do 4k 60hz fine with the 30$ display port adapter on the 270x.. love them.. buy another for 225 but not 248 hate to pay more than have to

Red text, especially on a black/dark gray background (see it from time to time here on the forums), is an almost unreadable, blurry mess. But otherwise, I barely notice it.

Nope, you'll need the DisplayPort to HDMI 2.0 adapter.

No single card setup is really capable of playing any relatively modern games at 4K (at least not without the settings turned WAY down). I play Fallout 4 at 1440p and it looks pretty good. Yep, the TV will take inputs in a variety of resolutions below 4K.
