What a non Founder's Edition card looks like.

Count me as someone who wouldn't buy the Galax version based on looks, geez is it ugly. Then again I don't consider Galax to be a top tier AIB as far as cooler design goes, I'll wait for an ASUS/Gigabyte/MSI/EVGA version, I'm positive those will have some much better looking coolers on them :D

Let the earlier adapter kiddies gobble up both the founders and non-founders shrouds. they both look weak and I doubt will cool all that effectively.

Give me copper pipes and 3 fans, that's what I want.

I don't get the beat down of case window fans here, this is still [H]ardocp right? the place were people overclock, case mod and stuff. I used to really be into the case window and make the insides all color coordinated and fancy even a few diorama but now my case sits under the desk full of dog hair with no side plate and sometimes I use it as a foot stool.

What's with the hate for case windows? Some people like showing off their hardware. Others don't give a damn. Luckily for us, there are products that cater to both crowds, and no need for one to bash the other. Yeesh.
Still, those that have case windows are likely to be the ones that are going for Founder's Edition - in my case, though the case is an OLD window case (and it's been my default case since 2004). I like understated elegance, and the FE cooler design (which will also be used for GTX1070) makes sense.

Windowless case, on the floor under my desk, parts only seen when I open the case when I clean them. I don't care if it looks like a $10 crack whore if it performs well. When she gives me a great BJ I just close my eyes.

I don't see what's wrong with it. It looks like an unfinished production sample to me, and the blower design definitely looks better than some of the custom ones we've seen from EVGA and ASUS in the past.

But the box art is atrocious... I wouldn't buy one of these simply because of it. If I shopped at a B&M store for computer parts anymore I would walk right past it.

For that $100 difference, I'd get a full cover waterblock over the angular/crunched up blower shroud.

So I guess my choice would be the plastic shroud.

while is agree is fucking ugly as sin, if the OCing ability of both cards are equal (ie founders cards not being better binned) then i'd buy the galax , rip off the shroud and water cool it. I have an X9 case and there no fucking way that ugly ass card would ever be in there unless i was water cooling it. Who ever thought that design was good looking needs to be crowbar'd

Is this just Galaxy but missing a Y?

It reminds me of that time in the 80's my mom drove an olvo.

I'm in the camp that says I don't care how it looks as long as it is quiet and cools well.

Ditto. I never look at my video cards, except for when I install them. Then the case gets shoved back up against the wall again, where it stays for another 6 months without anyone seeing inside.

To me the things that count are:
- Performance
- Reliability
- Noise level

(not necessarily in that order)

If a video card looks like a turd, but does better in the above three categories, I'll buy it over the competition 100% of the time.

I mostly agree, but unfortunately the GPU's are usually binned by ASIC quality, and the higher ASIC quality parts (which clock higher at lower voltages) usually wind up in the models with fancier coolers, so if I want to maximize performance and minimize noise I am usually forced to buy an expensive fancy cooler model, only to take the cooler off and replace it :(

The box art just plain out is boring as hell... Component box art used to be cool. Like the Apollo Bloody Monster geforce4... I guess when they know it will sell out in a brown paper bag they don't need to put a lot into the box art. lol.

I'd happily buy it in a brown box if it saved a couple of bucks (as long as it still came with warranty).

I found the box art on those back in the day pretty ridiculous and embarrassing. I'm buying a video card. I don't need 3d renderings of scantily clad women and orcs all over it. I've always preferred enterprise hardware and packaging, as it tends to have a no-nonsense "this product is designed for a purpose and that's what we focused on" appeal

What do you replace it with, if it already comes with a fancy cooler? A water jacket?

I know I've seen a few graphics cards in the past that just came with water jackets already installed. Unfortunately, they always appear to be priced higher than a comparable card + air cooler + water jacket, which seems like it defeats the purpose. I guess some people pay the premium in order to get a warranty on their water cooled card?

Well, I haven't gone full custom loop yet (mostly because I started adding up the costs, and I started questioning if it was worth it... all those fittings man... they add up!)

The last gen I would up with two EVGA ACX2.0+ 980TI OC+ cards, and added the Corsair sealed cooler brackets to them. Not sure if I'll do this again, as the Corsair kind of screwed the pooch with the last launch. The brackets were severely delayed, and once they finally launched they didn't fit the GPU's right. it was a mess. (they have since fixed it, but I'm not sure if I trust them next gen)

Backplates do help disperse some of the heat coming off the back of the card. However, one of their primary purposes is to provide strength to prevent warping of the PCB due to weight, heat, etc.

Yea My 7970 in my sig has a bit of warp due to no backplate...

But saying that, I've had my 7970 since 2013 and she's still running fine. and the twist is only minor.

I would too, video card box art is always really stupid and always has been.

I know EVGA publicly listed different prices for different ASIC "scores" and price (gouge) them in consequence. Any other AIB publicly stated this?

And yeah... ASIC scores, leakage, heat and watercooling is a whole subject on its own. I actually look at component choices before considering the asic score lottery. But again these are usually better with a fancy shroud which gets tossed aside anyway. However early boards are usually all reference, so the differences may be very small, which in curious about here. Later in the card's life cycle is when things usually get scrambled.

I'd buy this, it's Galax so it's bound to be cheap and it's a reference PCB so you can stick any aftermarket cooler on it you like.

You guys and your box art complaints. Give me a corrugated brown box with a card in an ESD bag, and I'll be happy.
Yup yup. I am not looking at box art for anything I buy on the internet that is going in la machine. I do keep the boxes in case I do sell the item though.

I actually prop myself on my PC. I have a HAF Lan Box that I currently am using. It's a great foot rest.

I guess we think of the H differently.

To me the H has always been a place where performance matters above all else, including aesthetics :p

I don't have a window but my grill let's my led memory shine on my ceiling. Its very cool. But the gfx card doesn't need to bling. It needs to run cool and quiet!

Also, ill take a slutty mermaid over this creepy pasta box art any day.

hard to say which Galax is uglier, the box or the card !

Or the name. I still think it was a completely stupid move on there part to change the name from Galaxy to Galax.

Really? Who came up with that idea? Some bean counter who thought it would save them 0.0000000001% off of their printing because of the dropped letter?

I can't wait for the day till they just start using texting abbreviations in all their communications, documentation, advertisements, etc.

Utterly stupid and pointless.

There's a team of these freaks (one for each new card I guess). I'm going to guess the book man is 1070.

That is... fucking retarded.

So my guess is the GeForce Crap Editions like this Galax card will be $600 while reference aka Suckers Edition will cost $700. That means custom AIB cards may hit $750. I bet the people that panicked and sold their 980 Ti for $425 feel pretty stupid right now.

A better guess is the difference in price is to give their AIB partners breathing room on their custom products, so most cards will end up being between $600 and $700.

I dunno. NV is setting expectations for a premium 1080 at $700. Very plausible that everybody else follows.

At least the AIB $700 1080s will have factory overclocks, cherry-picked GPUs, and higher-end cooling. Maybe add on a 6-pin plug too. So you get something for that money.

I like your case, very clean, but that obnoxious red light on the SoundBlaster Z card needs to be disconnected. it's ruining the feng shui in there.
thanks, I swapped the LED strip to red so now the inside is red instead of blueish white.

It's a lot like those "V2" cooler variants that Galax has been doing to make cheaper Maxwell cards.
