Hello all,

so I've been getting the urge to replace my tablet. It's been my portable to-go-to device for when I want to watch movies and draw. Lately I have been looking at the surface Pro line and I've been getting the urge to buy one. My intentions for the tablet would be the basic casual entertainment media consumption, drawing and possibly 3-D modeling and 3-D sculpting and because of this it means that the new tablet that I want to get has to be a Windows tablet since 3-D modeling is not available on android or Apple. However I find that the surface line seems to be a bit on the pricey side and for the money of the surface I think I can get an I-7 or I-5 lightweight laptop, ultra book or 2 and 1. Problem is one key feature that I want is a tablet/laptop that has been support and I don't know which ones for surface line price range are below that has good pen support.

Are there any laptops/tablets that have good pen support that are under the $1000 mark? It's got to be lightweight, decent amount of hard drive space, high resolution and decent battery life.

There's not much new you're going to find in the i5/i7 range for under $1k. Sounds like you want a top of the line tablet with that list of requirements. Yon could step down to a Core m or Atom device for a good bit less money and still be ok except 3D modeling. Another possibility is to go for a more powerful used system.

Pricing aside is there anything that competes with surface line in terms of light weight, resolution and performance? Good pen digitizer required.

Samsung Galaxy TabPro S is the closest competitor I can think of.

Quick clarification: there's definitely 3D modelling software on the Mac, it's just a question of whether or not the exact programs you want are there.

Like what Heatlesssun said: for what you're doing, you may want to just admit it and spring for a Surface Pro (4 if you can, 3 if you can find a good refurb). Make sure there's at least a Core i5, and you'll probably want 8GB of RAM if you're going to be doing 3D modelling. Expensive? You bet, but it's not going to be cheap to check all those boxes.

I finally got a Surface pro 4 aqnd adore it. Expensive, yes..But simply wonderful to use.

I love my Surface Pro 3 (i5 model), and even abandoned my company issued computer for it (My company is pretty lenient on the BYOD policy) once it got the proprietary software working. Probably going to get the i7 Surface pro 5 when it comes out.

Me too - Surface Pro 3 is great, and now that 4 is out the 3 can sometimes be found for decent prices. The 4 doesn't really bring anything major to the table for my needs.

Hey Shatterstar, have you had the chance to check out the Asus Transformer Pro 3 debuted today on Engadget?

Looks like they took the Surface Pro Concept and added a few bells and whistles, and it's part of their whole ROG line of products so it can be expanded using some peripherals. Doesn't look like it's any cheaper, but I'm liking the idea of being able to buy accessories to greatly expand the capabilities of the tablet.
