This video starts with the camera facing the wrong way so you will have to rotate it so see all the action. As far as I know, these are amateurs, not professional storm chasers, driving straight into a tornado to get this footage.

They didn't drive into the tornado just very very close.

I'd never be able to be a storm chaser, my brain sees that and goes, "Wait, why the hell aren't you driving away from the vortex of death and destruction?".

I must be getting old. It seems silly and risky to do this for not much gain. Cool video though!

360* videos are interesting but until we get real high res, 4K or better they don't yield much detail. The equivalent is like looking at a old SD video.

It took me a full minute into the video to realize I had to turn the camera around.. lol

Ha ha me too. I was like. "Why is Steve linking a video of the back end of a truck looking at some clouds. Then I saw some light debris and was like damn wish this idiot shooting the video had pointed the camera forward. Then I noticed that it was 360 video.

Now I am ashamed. :asshat: My family may disown me. Let me link it to them so that can feel as bad as I do. :)

I want to see a tornado eventually. Probably not going to get that close, but I'm going to watch one. I also want to experience a good hurricane.

I love the power of nature. Don't fuck around with it, and stay safe with distance and other precautions. But, it's so beautiful and terrifying at the same time.

Cool video. I knew to look the other way because it says it's a 360 video and it starts pointed the wrong way. :) Finally, I found something I can read and understand! I didn't screw up this time!

really cool video. I want a vr headset and better quality and would love to see this.

That's one of the big things I would love about VR. You can check out stuff like this safely, or tour Chernobyl. Or walk on the moon....

Damn - these guys are crazy. The professional storm chasers have armor plated vehicles in case of flying debris, cows, etc. I'll sit back and enjoy the video from the safety of my computer cave.

fucking idiots
Why so angry about it, you call them idiots and I call them adventure seekers. While its the same thing they do it for a reason and so long as they arnt risking anyone else except themselves then let them do what ever crazy things they want in the pursuit of cool videos and experainces I can watch so I don't need to do it :p

I don't. I always had nightmares about them as a kid.

Points to them for having the cinchonas to do that. But not for me.

I always wondered why someone hasn't attempted to fly a model plane into a tornado yet with a cam? Too hard? Or maybe drive an RC car with ground effects dynamics into a tornado.

How the hell does it work. I'm on an iPad and there is no 360. Just a static single view

I wouldn't think they would be amateurs filming that in 360, but I don't know.

Was a pretty good video though :)

Took me about 15 seconds to turn the camera view myself, even when you stated that.

How do you turn the camera?

On my PC there is a D-Pad like on a XBOX controller on the top left of the video. But I can just take my mouse and grab the screen to swing the camera around.

Put mouse on image and drag left, right, up or down

I've seen a few. It's very intense. A funnel formed over my head last year, but never touched down... that was very scary - much beyond just seeing one in the distance. I watched for about 20 seconds making sure I wasn't losing it (the storm was just coming in and more often they hang on the tails), then immediately grabbed my wife and got in the basement.

Edit: They also have a standard recording with obviously much better res that shows how close they were and how powerful that tornado was.

Been there, done that.. just long before cell phone cameras or even small video cameras were cheap enough for the masses :( Growing up in OK, we would watch for storms and try to catch a tornado if it was close enough. The closest I ever got was about 1/4 mile.. and that was too close, especially in a Suzuki Samurai (talk about a rolling death trap.. no weight and an under-powered 4-cylinder engine). We planned on stopping about 3/4-1/2 mile away and were fine until the thing shifted course towards us. There was a lot of screaming and nearly-soiled pants as we pushed that engine as hard as it would go on dirt roads for the closest intersection to get out of the way. The wind buffeting the soft-top with no muffling of the tornado's roar wasn't nearly as bad as the crosswinds making the whole vehicle rock.

Scary as shit.. but I'd do it again if I had the chance :p
