Following on the heels of the announcement that Windows 10 will no longer be free after July 29th, Microsoft has revealed it will be disabling the operating system's upgrade nag.

…after July 29th, Microsoft will begin removing the Get Windows 10 app from Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 machines. This is likely excellent news for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users who are not planning to upgrade to Windows 10, as it means there will be no more annoying upgrade prompts once the upgrade offer is over. Now, although Microsoft is refusing to comment on whether the upgrade offer will be extended before July 29th, there’s technically nothing stopping the company from changing its mind closer to the time. If that happens, then the Get Windows 10 app will like remain on Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 desktops until Microsoft begins charging for Windows 10 upgrades.

For how hard they're pushing users to upgrade, I highly doubt they will end the free upgrade offer.

They could just continue to allow license key codes for earlier versions of Windows during install as they do now.

All this user annoyance over a fantasy of getting desktop users to use a stupid app store... I can just imagine Ballmer and friends drooling at the thought of taking a 30% cut on all software purchases.

Integrating more ads and forcing everyone to use their app store is the eventual goal. They aren't making a whole lot of money giving away 10 and computer sales are stagnant. How else are they going to make money?

You mean I can turn automatic updates back on and not have to worry about wtf they are installing on my comp? Not sure I trust it.....

May as well abandon charging for Windows 10 upgrades for Home and Pro users. That or just charge a flat $30 Home and $50 Pro for new builds going forward. Make the money from Enterprise users.

Aw, here I was hoping they were going to aggressively shove it in your face, then when you click "okay", you're taken to a store page. That would have won hearts and minds!

Windows update on w7 has been a fucking gong show since w10 released. First time checking for updates takes DAYS to compete. Lovely piece of paid software there, gets worse as you use it more.

The problem is that if they extend the offer, no one will believe it's ending next time. And that means the software will be perceived to have no value because it's always free.

The people who haven't upgraded while it was free may very well start wondering, if the offer ends, whether they missed out on something and be willing to pay to find out. It's smart business to end it eventually, and especially just before it reaches a point where Windows 10 has killer apps. If Windows 10 has killer apps that won't run on anything else, people will buy it. That's what Microsoft really needs.

They need to make the Windows Store something that people want to use because it has stuff they want. Restricting people to using the Windows Store would incur too much resentment, but if they get publishers to release applications people actually want exclusively for the Windows Store, the carrot will work better than the stick. Quantum Break was the first Windows Store app that made me really appreciate having access to it. I mean, I own some movies and songs through the Windows Store, but the only Windows Store app I liked before was Adera. In other words, I think they need to try and compete with Steam, rather than Apple. It's just too bad that their Xbox division is making them shoot themselves in the foot when it comes to pushing Windows as the ultimate platform for PC gaming.

They're probably afraid that if they pull out all the stops and dump the entire Xbox One library on the Windows Store for purchase, they'll hurt the sales of their console. Although I really think this would drive the nail into Windows 7's coffin as far as gamers are concerned. Besides, if you can buy games on your Xbox One and have them run on any Windows 10 PC as well, or have several Windows 10 PC games run on the Xbox One... know they have stuff already that runs on both might make the decision easier.

Also, this simplified UI isn't selling people. What they should have done is let people choose between a more traditional interface and a Windows 8-style interface, and let there be Windows Store apps that can look and feel more like Win32 apps so that it's a less bumpy transition.

Yeah I'm sure most of their sales came from Enterprise and OEM/pre-builts anyway. Not many "normal" people ever went out and bought then installed/upgraded a new Windows version. They just used what was on the computer they bought.

With the Windows update patches it actually works fine. Without the patches it can be a mess on some systems. I've been applying the latest WU client patch on existing and clean installs and it helps a lot. Finds the patches in a few minutes rather than 60-90 minutes.

The problem is that if they extend the offer, no one will believe it's ending next time. And that means the software will be perceived to have no value because it's always free.

Anyone who's held out almost a year under MS's barrage of shady tactics like reinstalling KB's for upgrade popups already perceives it to have no value, so they might as well just drop the pretense.

But they're already opening the perpetual-free door up by qualifying "Well anyone that uses an 'assistive technology' will be able to get it free forever". So the "We've reconsidered. Offer extended by popular demand" is coming after July 29th. And if not, it's nobody's loss, because who's going to pay $119 for the privilege of being spied upon, and force-fed updates?

They very well might do that, but I think it's a bad idea on their part. I think they'd be better off giving developers incentives to make new applications only run on Windows 10 and then withdrawing the free offer, forcing people who held out to pay for the OS in order to run more and more applications. People have a tendency to cave when you hold the games and applications they want hostage.

Maybe if they "punish" people for holding out for so long, they'll pay more attention when they decide to offer, say, Windows 11 or 12 free for a limited time later on. xD

I recently heard (On Leo LaPorte's "The Tech Guy's Radio Show) that some non-Windows 10 user's are booting up their Systems, and being greeted by a notice saying, "Congratulations on Up-Grading to Windows 10"! In addition, this Forced Up-Grade Wipes Out all the Users Own Programs, and Created Files too?

So, if you believe this New Claim, I've got a Bridge, in the Arizona Desert, that I want to "Sell You"!

There may be multiple ways to Prevent/Undo this, but Steve Gibson, the Originator of the "SpinRite" Disk Fixing/Data Recovery Utility, who himself doesn't wish to be forced to "Up-Grade to Windows 10", especially without being able to Refuse to do so, has written a little Utility call "Never 10", which will Prevent that from happening, Unless You want, and Allow, it to take place!

So, If You Want to Control whether King MicroShoft can FORCE Windows 10 onto YOUR Computer System, go to : Most Popular Freeware on GRC.COM then click on "Download Now". Finally, "Right Click" on, and Run "Never 10", as Administrator. You will get a box with several options, including to "Remove Windows 10 Files", if they are already on Your System, and to "Disable/Enable the Installation of Windows 10", or to "Exit the Never10 Utility".

Either way, You will still be protected, even if you turn back ON, Automatic Windows Updates, so you have nothing to lose, whether King MicroSoft lied to US,Again, or NOT!

Enjoy Your New Found Freedom From the Absolute Rule Of King MicroSoft!

Interesting since upgrade do not wipe out ANYTHING! However, if someone does not want 10, that is fine but, FUD is useless. I look forward to the end of the free upgrades since it is not worth it for them to extend it. By the end, all those that want it will have it and those that do not will get what they wanted all along.

You clearly are unaware of the fix then: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3138612 Run that before you do a scan and it will fix the problem.

Oh the update to fix it has changed again! Thats about the third update now for that 'bug' (ahem). To be honest I've given up wasting my time. I can now install Windows 10 in less than ten minutes and update it in the same time. Job done. Time is money and I have given up caring. Customers don't seem to care. They just want a 'working' laptop back. I get paid the same if it takes 30 mins or 30 hours (as it feels to rebuild a 7 machine) so path of least resistance wins.

What are you talking about? I downloaded these files a few weeks ago, saved them to my flash drive and have been using them ever since. There is no updated file that are needed.

These clowns with three whole MSFT shares think you, me and every computer tech and IT Department should be sharing the burden and helping MS out by training and evangelizing to these "change averse" customers and end users to.. buy apps from the windows app store. That's the end goal. And all for the purpose of propping up a failed mobile effort that MS has already given up on. It's schizophrenic.

Seriously, that's the mentality.

Your definition of "FUD" is all screwed up, and you are just looking for an excuse to Delete my Comment, which you will have to explain to the IC3 Investigators, as I have already filed a report against Hard OCP, with them!

What the hell are you talking about? I have no MSFT shares or any other shares of any kind. Sorry if I posted a link that would help someone out but, next time, if you do not like it, IGNORE IT! I still prefer helping folks and giving back to the community, you just like to complain. Oh well, I love what I do for a living which is in IT, thankfully, you do not appear to be in IT.

Ah, I see, thanks.

After the free upgrade period ends, we will get a new pop-up for Windows 10 for $59 (Home) and $99 (Pro).

I can only Complain when there is "Something" to complain about.

I typed on my first Computer, a Teletype Printing Terminal", if you even know what that was, back in 1972, if you were even "a gleam in your Father's eye", by then?

So, to make up for your inadequacies, you call yourself "Gawd", or some reference to a large "Penis", and believe you know, and have seen, "everything in the World!

Come back and tell me that in another 31 years, if your genes can make it that far?

Crap, what you are going on about?????? I am not a mod here so I have no idea what you are trying to get at.

I have no idea who you are talking too but, it would help to select reply when you are referring to someone, thanks. However, I am 49 and wish I was younger so I could recover quicker from my runs and races. On the other hand, keep posting and you will get to be a Gawd too. :D On a different note, looking forward to the end of the free upgrades since by then, most who want it will have it.

Why are you calling Microsoft a King? It's not a person, it's a company... and...

So, to make up for your inadequacies, you call yourself "Gawd", or some reference to a large "******",

To be fair, we don't pick those user titles. You get assigned them with a certain number of posts, like ranks. I think the guys who run the forum have a running joke about the forum title sounding like it refers to both hardware, and something else being hard. You know, like a little slogan. "We're hard men that use real hardware, and have hard ______." You fill in the blank. LOL.

You didn't really think people were CHOOSING to be called "Limp Gawd," did you? It's like a little jab to try and get you to post more so you can get called a "Hard Gawd" instead of a Limp one.

Well since several of HardOCP's Godly types started picking on ME, for simply telling people that i use Steve Gibson's "Never 10" utility, they don't have to worry about GEX, one way, or another, UNLESS they want to do so, I have to believe all of HardOCP are in King MicroSoft's Dept, Payroll, or are scared to allow anyone, including ME, to post Anti-MicroSoft Anything, with out being attack all of you "Godly", Well Hung people!

Oh, I see HardOCP has changed at least one thing!

Used to be there was a little "Button" next to each Comment.

If the "Button" was Lit Up, then the person making that Comment, was "On-Line", and presumably watched your every "Key Stroke", judging from how fast, and How Accurately, they responded to anything you were doing, that they objected To!

That way I had a pretty good idea who might be a Hard OCP Employee, and what they "Thought that you were saying", so they could "Put You Down", or just "Delete Your Comment", as they felt best Protected HardOCP's Aims, Goals, and Agenda!

But those little "Buttons" are "Gone Now", so you can better "Watch, and Control, US"!

Paul

You know an OS sucks when it is FREE and everyone runs for Steves basement for safety.

WTF is going on here? Strange writings on the wall.

Sorry, but I get notifications of a Comment, but it seems no mtter where I click my Reply NEVER attaches to the Comment I am trying to reply to?

Paul

PS: are there any "HELP" files Posting/Replying to a Forum?

Why not simply remove it now. If I want free crap (W10), I'll get it. Why pester people to death about something they don't want or need.
