Samsung 950 PRO [Official Thread]

Hey, I finally got to build my computer Full Build: Ncase M1

First pic has the heatsink part number. I ran CrystalDiskMark 9x 3 times in a row and never saw temps above maybe 46 degrees. Problem solved.

small copper ones would have worked or the blue zalmans...thats a little pointlessly huge....

I couldn't mount those on my board without hitting something.

Anyone used smaller heatsinks effectively yet? Any links?

I have some spare aluminum heatsinks I pulled off of some old video cards and sound cards. These are 25mm x 25mm x 6mm and 28mm x 28mm x 8mm. I haven't noticed any slowdown yet, as I'm not doing large enough transfers to heat it up all the way, but if I do I'll probably slap these on there (whichever fit the best).

stalling on buying a 512gb, waiting for a deal to come around. is there any issues i should prepare for?

at that rate way for the 1 TB one

have they announced when itll be coming out? i rather not wait to long i can atlready do a work around with staples to get it to high $200. but i was more so wondering about how everyone is putting a heatsink on the drive. Is there any slim easy to setup options?

was supposed to be september ast i heard

mmmhmm.... lol idk if i could last that long. i was supposed to buying a used cpu cooler today from someone but that fell through so i went and bought it new. my temptation im sure will get strong enough to get it sooner then later lol

thats fine but 1TB is really nice as a main drive. I would have bought 1TB if it was out.

I'm finding the MS NVME driver is giving me better performance than the latest SS driver on a recently acquired 256GB 950 Pro:

MS driver;

SS driver;

One can see triple digit differences between "Seq" results. Also, boot times using the MS driver are lower. Not using the SS Magician software and CSM is disabled in the BIOS (Asus M8G motherboard). Does this make any sense?

Is there a free, or at least limited-time-fully-functional, tool that can report the temperature of a 950 Pro? Earlier in this thread someone said AIDA64 does, but without a paid license it just reports "[ TRIAL ]" for the temperature. I only want to watch my drive temperatures for a couple days; it's not worth spending $40 to me.

The Asus Z170I Pro Gaming has the M.2 slot on the back; the Lian-Li PC-O5SX has a 140mm fan slot blowing on the back side of the motherboard. I think there's enough airflow from this, going through the heatsink-access cutout, to keep my 950 Pro decently cooled... but it'd be nice to check that.

HWiNFO, HWiNFO32/64 - Download

Any hardware moniter package will work so google for hardwarw monitor program
If that were true I would have had no need to ask the question. So far I've found that:
  • HWMonitor does not see the 950 Pro at all.
  • HWMonitor Pro sees the 950 Pro but only reports its utilization.
  • Open Hardware Monitor sees a "aSsmnu gSS D59 0RP O15G2 B" (clearly it gets the byte order wrong) but reports only used space.
  • Hmonitor sees the 950 Pro but does not report temperature.
  • SpeedFan does not see the 950 Pro at all.
  • HDD Thermometer doesn't do squat.
  • AIDA64 reports the 950 Pro's temperature only if you pay.
Before I continued the cycle of download / install / nope / uninstall I thought maybe someone had useful wisdom to share.

And here's some now! Thank you, Eldata.

Please excuse the new kid on the block. I have heard the SSDs may not be as reliable as one would hope. I would love to have the speed, but I have some questions.

Can I transfer my Windows 10 to a new SSD?
How long can I expect the SSD to be reliable (I am on my 7 days a week for about five hours a day. I also leave the PC running most of the time).
My PC was build in 2009. I don't know the motherboard at the moment. But, would an SSD work well in that environment?

Where have you heard that? Outside of some really bad models from OCZ (that bankrupt the company) most other SSDs have a lower chance of failure and longer life expectancy than a spinner.

Greater than 10 years which is 2 times as long as a hard disk. With that said any storage device can fail at any time regardless of how much you use it. If you care about your data make sure you have backups.

But, would an SSD work well in that environment?

Yes. Look for a 512 GB Samsung 850 EVO, Crucial or Sandisk drive.

As long as you buy one of the top brands your fine. Crucial mx line, sammy evo or pro, sandisk extreme pro, intel, and maybe one or two other brands. If you go with those your good. Only thing you need to worry about is if it does fail its a complete loss and not a slow fail like hdd so back up once in a while.

If this was 5-7 or more yeara ago yes ssds were still spotty but those things are ironed out now with the top tier brands. Its like hdds. You dont buy the shitty branss

Sorry for double post but thia new forum design sucks on phone. I cant move around the cursor to edit in box.
also you need to realize that your warranty is limited. I burn through the warranties in 2 years on my ssds. So realize if you do a lot of writes the warranty is fairly useless.

also that means cryto erases rhats be done anymore or very sparingly. Also if your using sata ssds over provisioning is a must. My 950 pro i dont op. Op helps it too but its so fast i can get away with no over provisioning ;) well comparitively at least to an sata ssd

There are also secuity issues with ssds. Truely wiping an ssd is extremely difficult and can only be done 100% empty. You cant truely wpe free space on an active ssd do to trim. That may not affect you but it does me.

That same thing holds true for hard drives, the only real secure way to wipe them is to destroy the platters.

Not even close. Hdd dont have trim and manufured op thats hidden to you. There is some but not GBs worth of hidden space you can't access. Plus ssds are not easily destroyed either. Ssds are a massive security risk

Hi,
I've got some very weird issues with the 950.
My setup:
ASUS ROG MAXIMUS VIII RANGER, BIOS 1701
Latest firmware on the 950, and installed in a m.2 socket. running Samsung NVME Controller driver 1.4.7.17.
Windows 10 pro 64-bit (installed on the 950).

On my first windows 10 install, performance was horrible, and windows 10 were not installed with secure boot.
So I did a reinstall, and everything worked fine. Seq read/write as the spec says, and Random read/write 193000/82000.
After installing windows updates today, performance is horrible again. Seq read/write is still good, but random read/write is now 33000/27000.

Extracting a zip file from c: to c: is about 10MB/s
Copying a large file from another drive to c: is about 100MB/s, so that's not too bad.

Any ideas?

I just installed a new Samsung 950 Pro. Works great, except Samsung Magician 4.9.7 says "This ssd does not support OS optimization." Say what?! I find that hard to believe. And there are only about 3 google entries for it.

Does anyone else have this issue too? I'd really like 'overpartitioning' to work on my new system (with 950 Pro) as well.

over partitioning you mean?

OPing a drive like this is not a big deal unless you fall under a very specific work load and I dont even OP my 950 PRO so thats saying something

did you install drivers?

I honestly have no idea what that error means

Samsung Magician has an 'OS Optimization' section (which I had configured for long life span). That includes the overpartitioning (default 10%), so the disc will suffer less. When I boot from the 950 Pro, though, and start Samsung Magician, it just tells me my SSD doesn't support that.

Yes, btw, I installed the drivers (Win 10 has native NVM drivers too, btw; but the dedicated Samsung one is better, of course0

And it *is* kind of a big deal to me, as now I lost that 10% surplus space altogether (it's not just 'unused' in disk managment, it's just gone). At first I thought it was because of having cloned the disk, but others told me they've had the same error on a clean install.

Frankly that's just marketing for people who are disproportionately and unjustifiably worried about ssd wear.
Tech report demonstrated the endurance of SSDs with long term sustained writes.
In a prosumer workload (and really in most enterprise workloads) you do not need to be concerned about ssd wear.
