AMD announced its first quarter results from fiscal year 2016. Although revenue was down 19% compared to last year, there were a few bright spots like gross margins are up and operating losses are down.

AMD today announced revenue for the first quarter of 2016 of $832 million, operating loss of $68 million, and net loss of $109 million, or $0.14 per share. Non-GAAP(1) operating loss was $55 million and non-GAAP(1) net loss was $96 million, or $0.12 per share. “Our strategy to build a strong business foundation and improve financial performance through delivering great products is beginning to show benefits,” said Lisa Su, AMD president and CEO. “We continued to strengthen the performance of our Computing and Graphics business as our customers and partners show a growing preference for AMD. We are optimistic about our growth prospects in the second half of the year across our businesses based on new product introductions and design wins.”

AMD's stock about up about 38% from $2.62 to $3.63 at its peak after the announcement.

DAMN! Imagine if it would've been all good news!

I think the loss was expected and shouldn't be counted as bad news. It is the same old for AMD and was completely expected.

The stock purely jumped based on the unexpected announcement of $1.5 - 1.8 billion in revenue over the next three or four years for unannounced SOC's. Problem with the AMD custom SOC, as we saw in the past, it only slows the bleed. AMD really needs to diversify and get either way more SOC contracts or charge more. AMD needs to get the profit up as well.

If the rumors are correct and AMD may have gotten a SOC contract for Apple that could be a huge win. GPU's won't save AMD but their SOC's might if priced right.

Imagine if AMD could actually start spending R&D money on GPU's like NV.

Ars speculates the 3 SoCs are going into the PS4 Zen, Nintendo NX and possibly an updated Xbox based on:

According to Su's statements, any unannounced SOCs would land in "a different console or a new console," as opposed to "the current generation,"

It's almost certain it's not going into an Apple product since Apple has it's in-house ARM SoC for its lowest power devices and just refreshed Macbook with new Core-M products on the low power side, using CPU models with pretty low end GPUs (meaning that the relative strength of AMD's SoCs, it's beefier GPUs, don't matter compared to the other advantages of a very low power Core-M).

true also while its loses amd has remained fairly stable, and has diversified some with the consoles tech. considering the dangerous waters, seems they are doing well at surviving, while poised to produce hopefully great tech. to be honest i have been expecting a complete collapse... not that i want it.

I would love for AMD to turn things around and I'm happy that their margins are improving. However, that's sort of like saying you've plugged a couple of holes in a ship with a few hundred of them. Their revenue has decreased by $198m dollars in a single year. I'm hopeful that Dr. Su can turn things around but the positive spin and the stock price increases are throwing me for a loop.

if their next tech is a leapfrog they will be fine.. if its another marginal increase... hmmm dont think so

I apologize if I wasn't clear enough, hard to post at work. I didn't mean Apple was one of three unannounced SOC's; I was referencing the rumor that AMD may have also won a SOC contract from Apple to supply custom X86 SOC's for iMacs in 2017.

Rumor: AMD Making Custom x86 SOC For Apple's 2017 And 2018 iMac Designs - Nintendo NX Likely Powered By AMD As Well

That is a whole different revenue stream than the 1.5B for the 3 unannounced console SOC's.

That's 6 months old and nothing since suggests it was ever true. Rumor sites posts rumors, and many turn out to not be accurate. True things generally become more verifiable as time goes on. :p

I tried investing in AMD many years ago. I gave up. Don't get me wrong, I would love for the company to knock it out of the park and offer Intel and Nvidia much needed competition. That benefits everyone. They just haven't been much threat in the desktop space.
Their CPUs don't stack up against Intel's.
GPU's seem to do ok against Nvidia. I know a lot of people like that and they do well benchmarking. However, they always seem to play second fiddle to Nvidia.
At the end of the day, they haven't been able to make Wallstreet happy.

HOLY SH1T!

AMD stock price is now up 46%! :couchpotato:. Even with profit taking Fridays made a tiny bounce and looks like it should keep going.

WOW! I'm not sure what to say...

Edit: make that 48% now..

Here you go, made it up to 52% :

Advanced Micro Devices Inc.

Shares of Advanced Micro Devices Inc. AMD, +52.29% were having their best day in over 40 years, after the company announced a new licensing deal to a chip joint venture in China and reported better-than-expected quarterly results and outlook. The stock rocketed 36% in morning trade, the biggest percentage gain since it shot up 63% way back on Jan. 29, 1975. Volume hit 66 million shares within 90 minutes after the open, already about five times the full-day average. The stock was both the biggest gainer and most active on the Nasdaq exchange. Analyst Ian Ing at MKM Partners upgraded AMD to buy from neutral, and raised its stock price target to $4 from $2.90, saying the new China JV could become the best challenge yet to Intel Corp.'s INTC, -1.03% server dominance. It has now surged 56% over the past 12 months, putting it on track to close at the highest level since Sept. 29, 2014. In comparison, Intel shares have lost 3.4% over the past year and the S&P 500 has slipped 1.2%.

looks like AMD found some extra cash-
AMD Licenses X86 to China JV | EE Times
Anandtech has a better article: China Calling: AMD Forms Joint Venture for x86 Server SoCs in China

The CC transcript isn't really clear what's being licensed from IP AMD owns for x86 or SoC, but it's unlikely to be used on a new x86 processor by the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It does seem related to possibly getting more of AMD's own x86 processors into the Chinese market in addition to licensing some of its own IP from the announcement.

wonder what cpu instructions they are going to use for too those Chinese servers.

Best day in over 40 years is an outright lack of research. I've been kicking myself for 16 years for picking the stock jump in 2000 when the Athlon was released and canned the P4 but did not have cash to invest - stock went from ~13 bucks US to 40 then plummeted on profit take. This year and 2017 will not go that high obviously because things aren't as simple as they were back then but the canny investor can and will make good money on this stock if they time things right.

I feel your pain. I invested some money in 2000. I wasn't smart enough to cash in on my profits. I held on to the stock for several years thinking they'd come back...sold and wrote it off later. I invested some of the funds in Apple (don't cringe) and made my money back and then some. I still have some of my Apple shares.

MIPS64 most likely, like the rest of the Chinese developed processors. The IP AMD can license includes fabric for scalability and various things from the x86 side that increase performance like an efficient cache hierarchy, memory interfaces, branch prediction designs, SIMD extensions and cache coherency over HTT or similar protocols.

interesting mips seem like a good instruction set
