Weird M.2 SSD Heat Issues in the NCase V2

So I just purchased myself a fancy new M.2 SSD to double my storage from 250GB to 500GB. It's been pretty nice so far, but after running ~30 minutes of Battlefront (3440x1440, Ultra), my temps for my SSD had reached incredibly worrying amounts: while my GPU was ~55-60, and my CPU was ~65, my SSD had gone past 65 and into the seventies range (!).

Even right now, just browsing the web, the SSD itself is at 52, and I'm trying to figure out why.

Here's some pictures:

So not as high for 15 minutes, but that was just an offline mission.

Anyway, if anyone has their own issues with M.2 SSDs, I'd love to hear the answer. Cheers!

Most M.2 SSDs don't have any metal that they can dump heat onto, so it's just a chip. Is it on the back of the motherboard ? Then it doesn't get any fresh air either. Then you'd have to measure the distance between a metal case panel and the SSD's chip (not the memory, the controller) and get a thermal pad for the appropriate distance. Or if it's more than 7mm just get a 5mm high heatsink with adhesive backing on there.

Also: The 850 EVO Dynamic Thermal Guard feature constantly and automatically monitors and maintains the ideal temperature for the drive to operate optimally.

Ah, so for the last part, I can just assume it'll handle itself well enough? What are some good thermal pads I can get?

Problem with pads is that you will have to take away the sticky... and that might void your warranty. Food for thought...

What's your cooling setup? (Fans & heat sinks)

My 850 Evo in my M1 never hits 40C

Has anyone ever done tests with or without the sticker ?

Maybe, it depends what material the sticker is. Still, a poor conductor is still not an insulator, not all the heat will be trapped below it.

Isn't an insulator, by definition, a poor conductor? :p:D

It depends how you look at it, but I think we can agree the sticker doesn't help. Still, I would be amazed a thermal pad wouldn't wick away much of the heat.

Far, far higher than that. Idles at 45 on the M.2 slot.

I've currently got a Fury that takes up the entire bottom of the case, but I don't think that's the problem, considering that it idles around 27-8, and only gets to 65 when playing something like Crysis or Battlefront on Ultra. My CPU has one of those NH-9s Noctua fans (forget the exact thing but one of them), and that'll idle far higher at ~40, give or take five, maybe. That gets to 50-60 on load. Considering switching to AiO cooler.

The Sapphire Tri-X uses an open-type cooler, which means it dumps all the hot air around the card. My best guess is, some of this heat gets behind the board.

I've got the same exact setup you minus the Fury, I've got a 970 with reference blower. Mine is hovering 48C while doing web browsing and other light stuff. During game it raises into the mid 50s. The biggest issue is our m2 slot is on the back of the motherboard so we don't get any circulation.

This is what a solution might be for back mounted m.2 drives.
Samsung 950 Pro Review: Thermal Throttling Solved!

I imagine a similar setup would be great especially seeing as your m.2 drive doesn't see nearly the heat my top mounted 950 pro does. I actually saw 78C temps within 40 seconds of max throughput so I put way oversized heatsinks on mine (I had them handy from work) http://i.imgur.com/2M3jAP8.jpg but it definitely solved my issue and it maxes at ~40C under load.
