[H]ard|OCP test of VGTU for potential inclusion into the DC-Vault

Intel e4500 running Vista 64bit takes ~2.1 hours
Intel x3430 running Win10 64bit takes ~5.2 hours
AMD Athlon II x4 640 Vista 64bit takes ~2.7 hours
Intel i7-2670qn Win7 64bit ~5.4 hours
Intel n2830 Win10 64bit ~4.5 hours

AMD Phenom II x4 840t running Win10 64bit takes ~2.8 hours
Intel Pentium D 3.4GHz running Vista 64bit takes ~2.9 hours
AMD Phenom II x6 1045T running Win10 64bit takes ~14-22 hours ... not sure why on this one as it is a borg

nvm, I have a 3350P with linux already running. I just need to add BOINC

Well... If running Linux natively isn't an option then the VM would still probably be beneficial with the speed increase difference.

Finally got a Ubuntu VM spun up on my 2012 R2 box. It does appear to be about 20 minutes faster on half the cores at a lower clock speed then my Windows install.

Whoa!..Looky there. Mumps showed up. MODist is on the radar. We're all about to get mowed. :brb:

I think we as a team will be bumped down from 3rd to 4th position.
MODist is averaging 14.3K credit points per hour, SETIUSA 14.0K/hr and we are currently at 4.7K/hr

This is the first time I ran DC (VGTU) on a laptop. My HP EliteBook 840 with i5-4300u (2C/4T) consumes 22.7W with 4 threads @2.6GHz ! Just Win 7 pro.
When I closed the screen lid, the display switched off and the total power consumption went down to 20.4W. I thought this is quite an efficient cruncher.
Avg run time is 2.36 hrs or 135 seconds per credit point.

Pictures below.

Lost half a day worth of production when trying to install Ubuntu 14.04. Here is the result.

E5-2670 at 3.15 GHz with Win7Pro ~ 1.84 hrs
E5-2670 with Linux ~ 1.12 hrs. 39% improvement :D

Something just does not seem right with your times. They seem slow, all of my E5-2670 CPUs are 1hr 10min with windows down to 40min with Linux.
Why is yours taking so long? Is something in BIOS set to slow mode or not set to performance mode?
I would go over your BIOS settings and see if anything is not set right.
I have an Asus Sabertooth, an Asrock dual socket and an Intel dual socket board and I think your should be closer to my times.

OR do you have Hyper thread enabled?

Yes, I've HT enabled. All 16T are running at 3.15 GHz (BCLK = 105 MHz), see my sig below. I'm using BIOS 4701 with 7200rpm spinner. In BIOS, I enabled "Turbo Mode".

I see that you are running linux kernel 3.2.0 with BOINC ver 7.0.65 while I'm on 3.19.0 with BOINC ver is 7.2.42. Could this affect the speed?

I encountered problem with [H] Ubuntu DC Appliance installation. I had GTX 970 and the graphics did not work so I resorted with standard Ubuntu installation. Maybe I did something wrong along the way.

Your times are good if you have HT enabled. I may try HT and see if I can do twice the WUs in less than twice the time.
The folding appliance does not like the new video cards AMD or Nvidia.

Did a test running 8 threads instead of 16 threads. Got this down to 37.9 mins per WU.:D That extra 5% shorter time comes from my BCLK at 105 MHz instead of 100 MHz that you are probably using? In terms of CPU-run-time (in seconds) per WU-point, it remains the same BUT you are running 8 threads instead of 16 threads. Hence the output dropped by half! See below. Did I get this right?

Summary: Linux gives the best performance. Run full thread is more beneficial since you still get the same CPU-run-time per WU-point per thread.

I am not using HT, but I am getting 45+- points per WU give or take a point or two. Not sure why you're getting 26 points per WU at 8 threads???
So I do not think I will gain anything, I may try and see. I would have to do 2 WUs in less than double the time to gain anything.
The points per day will stay the same and my electric usage will go up a little bit with the extra load on the CPU. Extra electric and extra heat thrown off too.

Would you be able to post the "Computer Information" section of one of your VGTU tasks with 2670? I'm not sure which 2670 but you seem to have higher floating point speed and higher integer speed than mine. Maybe it has to do with my quad memory but CPU-Z (in Win7) says the MB is running quad channel. Does anyone know if VGTU computation rely more on integer speed or floating point speed? Maybe post this in the VGTU forum?

I now have 1 rig dedicated to this project till the end. I also have 2 others that will finish their already assigned tasks as well. Not a major numbers producer but it should help out a bit.

I've thought about updating the folding appliance to Ubuntu 16.04 LTS when it's released. I've worked with tear in the past to provide some updates to his awesome appliance so maybe we can come up with a nice 16.04-based appliance.

Apparently the 1 rig I had dedicated to VGTU crashed sometime last night. Get home today and it's unresponsive. Hopefully I can turn out the rest of my WUs before the end.

So, far things look positive with the challenge. Raising the available amount of work units has helped a bunch. I haven't heard of any other issues. I would say so far, this has been a success.

Managed to squeeze into the 10th spot during the last 4 hours. :D

I managed 33rd with 8954 but I had more points submitted before the end. I even got one done a few minutes before it was over with. It shows my points at 9397.

Not to bad IMO.
