Questions about Dell H200 Raid Controller after flashing

Yep I agree, I'll probably use a small piece of electrical tape when I put the card into my WHS machine.

I'm just wanting to verify that it's flashed correctly. I think that I went thru all the steps correctly, but I'm not sure with how it's showing up in Device Manager.

I finally got a little bit of time to work on this card again!! I went thru the steps in the link below to flash the card into IT mode. I think everything went good while flashing it. But I'm down to step 6 & 7, booting back into Windows to "make sure you’re using the LSI StorPort driver".

The card shows up as "Dell 6Gbps SAS HBA" in Device Manager. So I tried updating the driver with the driver from the "LSImpt_SAS2_P16" folder on the flash drive. But it still shows as a "Dell 6Gbps SAS HBA".

So did I do something wrong during flashing the card or is there another step that I'm missing??

SAS HBA crossflashing or flashing to IT mode, Dell Perc H200 and H310
Does it work when you hang drives off of it? When crossflashing OEM hardware cards sometimes the names don't change. For example, I have some IBM ServeRAID cards flash with LSI firmware, but they still show up as IBM ServeRAID in the device manager. You want to have a SAS HBA after flashing, so the description seems okay. The screenshots in the article could be from a real 9211-8i or perhaps a M1015 (maybe they show up different when crossflashed).

I tried connecting 2 different HD's to the card over the weekend, I also used 2 different cable ends. I think it was the P0 & P1 ends, but the additional drive never showed up in My Computer. I've attached a few screen shots below to hopefully give some additional info.

Is there something that needs to be "turned on" in BIOS for the card to work?? I looked thru the BIOS screens but didn't see anything that looked incorrect.

Any suggestions at this point??

The card seems to show up in the System Settings.

Here's some screen shots from Device Manager and of the card info / properties. It looks like it is using the LSI driver, so maybe the flashing and updating the driver worked like it should??

I do have drivers installed. That was part of the instructions in the link that was provided to flash the card into IT Mode.

But I wasn't aware that there was any type of software required to use the card??

It's not required AFAIK. However, MegaStorage Manager may be able to tell you more about what's going on with the card.

I have a H310 I was planning to flash to an HBA, but I haven't done it yet, so I can't be more helpful.

I'm not familiar with MegaStorage Manager?? A quick google search didn't bring up much info.

is this a rebranded 9211 8i? I forget what this was sorry. Go to LSI main site and find the original version of the HBA and download the Mega storage manager there.

The name not changing isn't a problem. Some of mine have changed during the flashing process and some haven't. As for the drives not showing, you probably have reverse breakout cable and not a forward.

can you explain that?

this might be an issue for me...too. I thought they were universial.

I am about to use this to connect my Norco 4224 back plane to my MB. Do i have the wrong thing if these are not reversible?

Mini SAS to 4-SATA SFF-8087 Multi-Lane Forward Breakout Internal Cable 19 Inch

This is the cable that I bought. I checked here prior to buying it to verify it was a forward cable. Was that the wrong kind??

Which I guess even if it was sold as a forward cable it might not really be??

well i am glad i was still reading this...i would have lost my mind wondering what was wrong. Thanks. Ordered the right one now for myself -_-

Here is a good read about which and why. Are there any markings on the 8087 connector end? It might say controller or something like that. It still could be something wrong with the card but it looks a lot like having the wrong cable.

SAS to SATA cables: Forward or Reverse Which, Where, Why

Ok, when I get home I'll check the connector end to see if it says anything on it.

If I do have the wrong one again, is this cable Mini SAS SFF-8087 36 Pin to 4 SATA 7 Pin HDD Hard Drive Splitter Cable 10Gbps the correct one?? Even just from searching online, it seems a bit difficult to locate the "forward" cables??

yea no if you just buy a ccable it will be forward....you have to search and find a reverse. I would wager its a forward. See my post above. I first bought a forward its labled as host to backplane which is forward. The second link is to a reverse cable...I bought the wrong one :/

BTW you are putting sata power to the drives right? SAS can't power the drives. I assume you have them powered but thought i just mention that for the small chance you forgot to power them. (highly doubt you forgot that but lets be safe and check :D)

The first cable I bought has a 3002 label on it. I was told here (and listed on the below chart which was posted in this thread) that it's the wrong cable.
The second cable has a 3004 label on it. So from the chart that looks like it'd be the correct one??

Should I still try another cable?? Either the one I linked above:
Mini SAS SFF-8087 36 Pin to 4 SATA 7 Pin HDD Hard Drive Splitter Cable 10Gbps
Although the "SFF-8087" isn't listed anywhere on the chart??

The one that SomeGuy133 linked / bought from Amazon is listed as a "Reverse". So isn't that the wrong one, we'd want "Forward"??

Ahhh, ok. I knew 0% about this before looking into getting this card. I'm thankful for the [H] members helping me slowly learn on the fly. Just got a bit confused, getting the right card, flashing it to IT Mode, forward vs. reverse cables!?!?!?

After initially getting the wrong cable (3002), I used the chart that was previously posted and got a 3004 cable. So I thought I was getting a forward cable??

I did some more searching. Would this cable work?? It clearly states "forward breakout cable", it's from Monoprice and I could get it in 2 days via Amazon Prime.

Yeah, we'll get this all figured out eventually!!! Just trying to make sure I don't end up ordering a pile of wrong parts in the process!!!

This cable is on the way. Should be here tomorrow, so hopefully this weekend I'll get a bit farther along with this.

I got this new cable at the end of last week and I got a chance to connect it yesterday. I'm still having the same issues.

The card shows up in Device Manager (and in the BIOS / System Info), so I don't think that it's an issue with the card.

I can hear / feel the HD that is connected spin up, but an additional drive never shows up in My Computer. I tried 2 different HD's to make sure I wasn't using a bad drive. Also, not sure if this matters, but all of this is being done in a "test machine" (and old Dell PC that I had lying around). Figured that it'd be better to test things out instead of adding the card to my server, trying out various drivers, disconnecting all the HD's, testing the new card with a single HD, over and over again in the server.

Does the drive show up in the device manager?

You know you need to use disk management to initialize the disk, put a partition (simple volume) on it, format it, and assign a drive letter before it's going to show up in My Computer right?

The drive does not show up in Device Manager. Only the C:\ drive (and it's recovery partition) are there.

I might have forgotten about initializing & assigning a drive letter to the new drive. But I checked this morning and it also does not show up in the Disk Management. Only thing there is the C:\ (and it's recovery partition) and the PC's DVD drives.

Try flashing the card back to an H200 and seeing if the card shows anything in it's on-board management.

You'll need a copy of the H200 SBR which I don't have. Some Googling might get you a copy. You can grab the H200 firmware from the Dell site that has a batch file to do all the flashing in it. I believe once you flash the SBR and restart, the Dell batch file should take care of flashing the H200 firmware and BIOS.

Would it be worth it to try flashing the card into IT Mode again?? Maybe something didn't work correctly the first time??

Or would trying to flash it again "damage" something??

You might find more help on the Servethehome forums. There are a lot of people there who seem to be knowledgeable about cross flashing these various cards into HBAs.

I posted over on the Servethehome forum and worked on this over the past couple of days. The responses over there assisted me with updating the card to the P20 firmware. It took me a bit to first find the P20 firmware and then also to get the "sas2flsh -o -f 2118it.bin" command to run the P20 instead of re-running the P7. But after some trial and error and then some more trial and error, I got the card updated to P20 (pic below)!!!

After getting the firmware updated , I connected the breakout cable and a hard drive again but that drive still doesn't show up in Disk Management. I can hear / feel it spinning (like before), but it dosent show up. I also tried the 2nd forward cable that I have to make sure that I wasnt using a bad cable.

Is there another step that I'm missing when connecting a drive to the card??
