Obsidian have some very good artists I have to say. I'm still on Pillars, but this looks interesting.

Gorgeous game.

But I just can't do swords and magic for awhile. I'm just......I can't.

I read this as "Tranny" and got excited....

Edit: Holy FOCK this looks like what Diablo 3 should have been. I am now excited again.

Looking forward to this. May be old-style, but I find PoE to be very entertaining.

Hopefully not with a garbage turn-based combat system.

Agreed.

Hopefully not with a stupid real-time combat system.

Real time stupid? Too each their own I guess. I can't stand turn based games personally.

I can certainly understand this. I almost never can do swords and magic stuff. I liked Diablo 1 & 2, never played 3 and I think that about covers it for the bulk of sword and sorcery type games I've put any real time into. I played Age of Conan for a few weeks off and on I guess, but the bugs, grind and lack of content drove me away from it.

The big take away from your post is that tranny's excite you. As for the comment about Diablo 3, I agree. I had the same exact thought when I first saw the screenshots.

What about a hybrid system like Baldur's Gate/Dragonage Origins?

I'd prefer it to be more like Diablo 2 personally.

Is there any actual confirmation on the combat system at all yet? Really holding out for ARPG point and click. I liked Pillars of Eternity but I'm so over that kind of combat for a while after playing through that game.

I never understood the hatred many people have for turn based combat. It allows you time to think, instead of being a click fest. If you want real time, go play a shooter, that's the best fit for real time combat. Some of us like to think about the best strategy to use, and would like the time to decide. Also, it's nice to be able to get up and get a fresh beer or take a piss without having the game punish you for not being at the helm. Turn based, i can get up from the computer and leave it sit as long as i need to, until i can return to the game.

I understand that some real time games allow you to pause, but is that really real time then? Even real time with pause isn't as good as turn based, IMHO, at least for certain genres.

Why not RTWP? I think Real time with pause is the best for a game going for a classic pc rpg experience.

Still super-bummed that they changed Torment from RTWP to turn-based :(.

I mean turn based can work, The new X-com games for example, are GREAT turn-based games, but most turn-based modern rpgs end up feeling really really under-whelming when it comes to tactics an dmaking use of proper cover mechanics and things.

Personally, Diablo 1 and 2 would not have been anywhere near as fun with turn-based or pause-based combat.

I prefer my strategy games turn-based, as for RPG I could go either way. And I'm probably not lining up for a turn-based shooter anytime soon if there even is such a thing.

Doesn't Obsidian prefer the pause-based combat if we're going by track record here?

Well, diablo isn't an RPG. It's basically an isometric shooter with character and equipment grinding. RTWP is probably the best compromise solution, but some games should just be turn based, and some should be real time. But there are people out there to whom turn based is simply a no go. For me, it depends on the game.

The two new X-coms are are kind of turn based shooters. And loads of fun to boot (although the second one was a bit lacking to me, but still fun).

Real time with pause is better than pure turn based gameplay. KOTOR 1 & 2 were like that. I still prefer everything to be real time. If I want turn based, I'll play chess or something.

Fallout 1 was the game that got me into RPG, which was turn based.

However I had always been more concerned with plot than actual combat in RPG's, which is probably the main point of me playing RPG's. The actual form of combat is probably way down on the list, which probably explains why I have a tolerance towards turn based games (EG Final Fantasy, even the generally disliked 13).

In fact, the only combat I actually didn't like is the forced pauses in RTWP. I switched it off in KOTOR 1 & 2 as soon as I learned about it, I find it completely breaks the flow of the game.

I turned off the pausing as well in the KOTOR games.

Looks pretty interesting, I'll definitely give it a look once it's available.

A lot of differing opinions on combat.

My 2 cents:
If it's a true strategy RPG it needs to have turn based combat. If it doesn't have this, it's really not an RPG. Fallout 1/2 is still the gold standard.
Diablo is just a click fest. The stats "matter" in terms of damage, but it matters not at all in terms of strategy or thought process.

I do/did enjoy KOTOR. But if we're honest all the strategy and RPG elements in that game were virtually non existent (in terms of combat). Basically for 99% of the fights, all you need to do is just queue up a bunch of skills until everything is dead. Even the things that are supposed to make the game easier (like grenades) I didn't even bother with. There is so strategy. There is no thought process. By the end game in one playthrough all I did was just juggle enemies with force powers that were queued up in the same order.

If unit positioning is to matter, if stats are to matter, and strategy are to matter it has to be true turn based. If not, that's okay. But then don't call it an RPG. Call it a third person action game with RPG elements (so-dubbed ARPG).

It's also available on GoG as well.

Problem I have now is, Steam is currently being sold at a 33% discount compared to GoG for me due to regional pricing (or the lack thereof for the latter), so I am a bit torn as to where to buy it from...

Same. Haven't even started Pillars of Eternity yet. And Civ VI comes out this week to take my time away.

There's too many games!

That's nothing, I haven't even started PoE, Wasteland 2 or any of the Shadowrun games, am only a fraction of the way through The Witcher 3 and will be receiving Kickstarter copies of Torment and Divinity Original Sin 2!! I don't remember having this problem when I was a deadbeat student, I finished games in a couple of days and then spent the balance of my time on MP waiting for the next release. God damn job and family commitments!

I'm on the final Boss in the End of Time for Divinity OS. I'm on ACT III for Pillars of Eternity ACT II was tedious. Divinity Original SIn is the better game.

I prefer Pillars... much more dialouges, in which choices you made during character creation matter and in which the level of your skills matter too. I'm on my like 5th playthrough and still finding something new in game. Really showing Bethesda and Bioware how the real dialogues and choices should be implemented in RPG, and not those abominations in Fallout 4 or ME3. Just first 5 minutes of PoE gives you more dialogue and options than whole Fallout 4 :)

I just hope Tyranny will be even better... those few more days to wait will be a nightmare to bear :D

I've barely even touched Divinity or PoE, and I've already purchased this. And I've got another 100 hours on another RPG before I have the time to pick up another one.

I REALLY have to stop pre-ordering games...
