Experience Your Computer Desktop In VR

Oh man, sitting at a virtual desktop while using a virtual desktop showing a virtual desktop. I think my virtual desktop just had a stackoverflow.

If you have a multi-monitor set up, you'll be able to see all of them in VR

Is the virtual desktop dependent on the physical one? It wouldn't be much use with the crappy old 1280x1024 monitor I'm currently using. Otherwise I'd definitely be up for trying this once I have a HMD.

I wonder if this could replace expensive home theater equipment at some point.

I wouldn't have to worry about light controlled room, wouldn't have to decorate interior to look like a theater, wouldn't need to run cables through the ceiling for projector, etc.
With a little Dolby Atmos, this could be incredible.

You'll need to have the actual monitors connected or use one or more headless ghosts. I don't remember how it handles virtual super resolutions so that may be a way for you to get a higher res, maybe I'll test that out tonight. I'm currently using the free version from the site, the Steam version which I assume won't be free, but which I will be happy to buy releases Monday along with the Oculus Rift.

So I tested it @ 4k on my 1080p monitor and it only showed 1/4 the screen, changing the size of text apps, and other items back down to 100% made it show the entire screen but it was basically unusable, it didn't increase the size of the virtual window, it just made text completely unreadable unless you leaned all the way forward.

For solo use it could be pretty cool. It's one of the first things I'll be testing out when I get my Oculus. I'm really curious to see how much better 3D movies look while using an Oculus as opposed to traditional 3D glasses. I don't think I'll get rid of my projector as I enjoy having friends and family over for movie nights but when I'm watching movies by myself I'm hoping the Oculus will be comfortable enough to give me an Imax level of immersiveness in my living room.

Tried it with my DK2 and text was very difficult to read.
I love the idea, but in regards to VR desktop, talk to me when the 4K rift comes out..

Pretty much. I feel like the first gen of VR devices will be more of a stopgap on the way to something more polished, it simply needs more resolution.

Someone put together something like this with Windows XP many years ago called SphereXP. It was cool because you could actually layer things within the sphere so you had a true 3-d workspace.

I will have to wait and see how comfortable the goggles are going to be. I am also curious is they solved the "headache" problem. The DK1 kills me (realizing its a few years old now and way behind times). The Samsung Gear VR - much improved. However, I still get a headache/dizzy with some of the content and after more than maybe 15 minutes of use.
Not trying to be negative - DK1 and the newer devices are absolutely awesome to view. I am just not sure I'm going to be up to the task.

Sounds like something is wrong with how you are wearing it, possibly an incorrect IPD setting. I'm not sure if the DK1 had an IPD setting or not but it was an LCD panel with a 60 Hz refresh rate, not great at all. If you get a chance to sit down with a consumer release Vive or Rift, try it out and make sure you set everything properly.

Damn... When we get to 4k 120+ hr vr I could definitely see this replacing a high end monitor.

I have used this program for a while now ( ever since dk2 came out) Its fun to pay with but the dk2 resolution is a bit too poor to make it useful. Generally I do use it watch 3d movies every now and then.
